Take a look on here www.diyelectriccar.com/forums/ I have an electric motor (16-60Kw @120v) and controller for my Sandrail, or as I am just finishing up putting the MX5 engine in it, a different sandrail. All I need is batteries - which is where it starts to get really expensive.

Beginning to look a bit more like an engine swap! Bought a used alloy rad off a IS200 Lexus with the outlets in the right place, a conveniently built in expansion tank and twin fans - so that's next when it arrives.

My contact Said:
at the moment don't have any sf5 foresters breaking. We are meant to be having 2 come in but unsure of when yet. If you pass on our details, Usedsubaruparts on Facebook then will happily look out for one for him.

Over on the MIG welding forum there is a regular that works for a co that strips Subarus. I dropped him a PM and pointed him here maybe he can help.

Oh yes I see after you click through, in greyed out writing, in smaller than small print. Pretty sneaky, it doesn't say "offer" anywhere. Maybe it is just me but I judge a book (or content provider) by it's cover (or web site). Tried to take a look at the T+Cs/Privacy but just redirects to the home page.

I looked at the MOTOD site and it's $24.99 for a year or $99.99 for two ?? There must be some even smaller, small print I am missing here as that clearly does not make sense!

Of course the reason I know is that when I saw yours I immediately went off to see how much they were and if they are legal- despite being a bit older than 11 Personally I am thinking 2 yellow ones for indicators!

Looking great, lots of progress as usual! Love the fibe flare/whip light but just a heads up - though you probably know already, that you can not use your whip light on the road - unless you get one that shows red to the back and white to the front! No vehicle should be fitted with a lamp which shows a red light to the front No vehicle should be fited with a lamp capable of showing light to rear other than a red light White lights at the front are permitted Only red lights are permitted to be seen from the rear of the vehicle You can't fit green lights to your car at all (green lights may only be fitted to medical practitioners' vehicles) www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/contents/made#(Tii)iicolourlightshownlampreflectorNot sure if you can use a red one as a brake light (or 2 yellow ones as indicators...)

Finally some progress! After over a month of research and head scratching I am pretty sure I can make the original plan work. Now I know how to lengthen the shaft and have all the parts, I have a plan for using the MX5 intermediate bearing and oil seal on the VW shaft. I know how to attach the chopped MX5 bell housing to the plates - bolted up the test MDF plate and it all fits. Clutch plate will be 215mm VW with rest stock MX5 Next up engine mounts, Then finish the exhaust then cooling and intake. I'll do the shaft and find a 215mm VW clutch plate when I pull it out for final weld up and paint.

Thanks for that. I found out that the Diesel T25 bell housing is larger than the petrol one - and in fact large enough to go over the MX5 flywheel. However after a few days of thought I have tonight had a brainwave about how to deal with the shaft issue so i can stick with the MX5 set up.

Anyone know the actual diameter of a T3/T25/Vanagon flywheel? Looking for a larger bell housing for the 002 box to save me machining flywheels.

The slave cylinder will have to be pre-loaded against the arm or you will not have enough travel - basically as far as you can move the arm by "hand" against the spring about 10degs past the vertical from memory. You are not actually moving the clutch, just taking up the slack. Handily this also means that the bleed nipple will clear the oil cooler tin wear.

Now need to get MX5 shaft welded to VW shaft Spoken to two separate recommended motorsport engineering shops, one said "sure, do it all the time no problem", the other said "nope, fail, disaster, need a new shaft making for £££" - however shop 1 has not been heard of since... So as a backup plan if I can't find anyone to do it, I am investigating throwing away all my work so far and starting again and making a Franken clutch so I can just use the VW shaft. The VW clutch plate is 200mm and the 1.8L MX5 engine clutch is 215mm - consequently the MX5 flywheel and ring gear won't fit in the VW bell housing. However, I have discovered it is a known mod to put the 200mm clutch off a 1.6L on the 1.8L engine as a poor man's lightened flywheel, so if that would fit in the bell housing, a VW plate looks like a standard item so I use that, spigot bearing is the same ID, and if I can get the throw out bearing to work.. easy!

Thanks. Much better looking than your average SWA cable ! PO used trailer cable, which is OK but of course with LED lights way overkill. Talking of batteries I used these guys www.ebay.co.uk/usr/willinton?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2754 to make up battery cables - cheaper than I could have bought the components and a great job.

Hydraulic conversion for me was dead easy. I used MX5 parts as they were on hand and mounted the slave on a bracket made from 3mm angle coming off one of the engine bolts. Used a bit of threaded bar with a slot for a screwdriver and threaded on the VW clutch nut backwards for an adjustable pin. Once I realised the first 10 degs of travel in the clutch arm was not doing anything it worked straight off (pic is beetle box, bus box worked the same, also before I put the adjustable pin in)

Back to the adapter plate, I used a cheap scanner and CAD to make a template for the laser cutters by overlaying the scanned images of the two parts. Getting it cut in 1mm steel to check it fits before the 23mm Ali needed to accommodate the diff stick out.
