Saab car transporters (Solstad)

Just started my one week take home exam today, and I am bit bored right now, so I thought I should write a brief summary and post some photos before I pack up for the night.

I remember seeing one of these Solstad Saabs when I was young, and out of the blue I started thinking of them again while writing my exam. I guess I can´t switch off the part of my brain that constantly is thinking about cars Anyhow;

Solstad was a company situated in Sweden who made different types of custom built cars based on Saabs, mainly car transporters and ambulances.
All of those I know of have 6 wheels and have a stretched frame - or more precisely: everything from the b-pillars and back are custom built.
A few other companies have later built car transporters based on Saabs in addition to some amateur built examples, but they all seem to be called a Solstad Saab.
I know there are several other car makes that have been used in similar ways, with the nicest ones being based on old Citroëns, but I think some of the Saab ones look quite good, and it is an interesting piece of history.

What Saab is that on the back, it looks pretty serious

Have no idea what´s going on with that Saab at the back. Probably a 9-5 I would think.

I live in Norway, and I think it would be difficult to get it on plates here as well. In Sweden they have what is called SFRO, and they can approve all sorts of vehicles so that they are legally registered and have an MOT as long as they are built safe. I am not familiar with the rules of this though.

If you wait for the modified commercial section to get put into place in the UK it should be relatively simple to build one of these and get it registered, especially as later model cars already pass most of the difficult parts of the test.

I don't think so at the moment, as theres no class for them i the current testing scheme and as you'd be altering the chassis it would need testing, ACE says the relevant test is coming, dunno when though.

Tissier have been doing similar conversions on Citroens in France since the 50s, using DS, CX and XM as a base. Those crop up on French ebay from time to time and have the advantage you can drop the rear for loading.

you could fit airbags on the back of anything if your fitting your owns suspension, its an option on a lot of modern vans.

there used to be a stretched cortina one in notts area belonged to a metro specialists, got a pic but no way to put on net.

would love a mk3 cortina one.

duno if its one of these or a home made job but i beleave one is in the york area poss saab dealer/specialist?

I've seen the York based one, at Elvington a few years back, 9000 Aero based transporter carrying a 9000 aero trackday car I think.

Never seen those before
quite a few cars would meld rather well into a transporter
Jaaag!! would be good as would a 5 series

Would be a lot more work to do a RWD based car though. With a FWD base car you have the advantage of not having to mess around with the drivetrain. Keep dreaming of doing a VW Touran to take my bug around:-)

Theres a saab place here in hull that's had one of these for as long as I can remember. I assumed he`d made it himself but maybe its one of these proper conversions.
