I bought this lovely little MX5 at the end of last summer and to say I was happy was a massive understatement. I'd finally got the car I'd wanted after all of these years and I was damn sure I was going to enjoy it and enjoy it I did. That is under a mystery electrical fault began to appear, melting fuses at an alarming rate and gradually grinding the car to a halt. After a few 'fixes' with no success the car was wheeled down to Bristol where the Area 52 boys set about stripping it down to find the fault. What was found was an extremely sketchy alarm and immobiliser installation and some of the most bodged wiring known to man. The decision was made to completely re-wire the entire car from front to back using a genuine loom from another car. This was a massive undertaking and that was meticulously done by Bruce at Area 52 over countless hours. Not one original wire is left in the car and everything is as it should be now. Soon after this the front brakes were renewed and replaced and now have less than a couple of thousand of miles wear on them, so they are truly fresh.
So why am I selling it? Well, the TAX and MOT came up within days of one another and I simply could afford to put them through. The car has now been sat on my drive for the best part of two months and I just can't bare to see a car wasted when it should be out storming country roads with the top down. This car really is amazing to drive, everything you've ever heard about an MX5 is true, they plaster a grin on your face that is impossible to remove.
At this price I honestly don't think you'll find more fun for the money. The 1600 motor is a great runner and you'll be hard-pressed to find a more solid shell at double the price let alone this cheap. The sills are spotless as are the rear arches, both notoriously rotten spots on MX5's of this age.
The car does has its faults, the rear screen is cracked, but can replaced very cheaply, the passenger wing was the victim of a hit and run and had to have a dent hammered out, the drivers door needs a wiring loom for the power window and the wipers don't work. However these are all easy fixes if you have the time, know-how and space to fix them. The car comes with two wiper motors and a new indicator/wiper setup which should cure the wipers.
This car deserves to be on the road, yes it's a little rough around the edges, but it's also a fantastic, genuine Sports-Car that with a little time and effort could be a real gem and a future classic. Prices won't stay this low for long with more and more of these great little cars disappearing every year so grab this one while you can, you won't regret it.
The car is more than driveable but with no T&T the buyer drives home at their own risk.
