1974 trabant 601S. old smoky

I have been after a trabi for years and the other day I see a post on here saying trabant £50.

well it had been on there for 2 or 3 days and no one wanted it.

well you know me. I had my trailer hooked up and on my way to get it

the car is in very very good condition with no rust on the body or foors. the only prob the engine is not in the car as it was stuck and jamed up.

all that to get to the crank to see it was well had it.



need a new one or I hope to find a running engine

as there is not much work to be done on the car as I plan to run it as it is ( new parts were needed ) so its still sat on my trailer

The other day I wondered if it would be a good idea to by a Trabby, remove the body, junk the rest, buy a decent modern car of the same wheelbase, remove the body and junk it and make sweet love between the Trabby and modern floorpan and mechanical bits. Just a thought

Yeah it's fun nursing the old stuff along and making a little nicer if necessary. How is the engine parts availability situation?

I was told it was good but I can not find much online I have the number for trabi uk and will call them on monday. I would like to find used parts were I can

such cool wee cars! And simplicity at its best! Nice colour too- just like a ferrari...

Can the crank be blasted and then machined? Or does it run on needle bearings? I'm sure you'll be helped out by others, such is the support for these little cars.

it looks to far gone. the rust is very bad and it is all rusted up so parts don't move and it has other damage. so a used part will be needed

nice project, hope you manage to find the engine bits without much hassle. Trabants have a really similar roofline to minis!

The later Trabi's had the running gear from a 1.1 polo, so can be made in to very quick cars.

But you´d need the later model subframeas well, you can´t just drop them in.

been looking on there old bus but my main prob is getting parts sent over and the fact I can not read german so I don't know what I am buying. can you help ?

not much off a update.

my trabant has made it into my lock up and thats about it as I still can not find a working engine for it

my engine is had it. bent con rods , crank and crank case all getting a god hit from it locking up at some point in its life.

is there any other easy to find engines I could put in it ?

also is there anyway to find out if your car has been in any films or tv ?

Wartburg (just a 3cyl Trab engine) has been put in a few times. Barkas engine is the same -too.

well time for a update.

I have a engine at last. you may have seen it in the back of my wagon r at the beach meet

took 10 minits to fit lol



still need to wire some of it up and fit the petrol tank

got to get kayto the camper fixed and then I will get it back on the road and moted. then the fun can start ready for the retro show next year

Think i remember seeing this on a trailor somewhere around kettering a while back, aren't these mostly fibreglass or am i thinking of something else?

I believe some of them had bodies made from a cotton type material and resin.
