OK, you were a kid (maybe you still are LOL) and you were glued to the boob-tube watching the heros of the day battle it out, life and death situations in crazy stunts and fast driving. You wanted to be that guy, and part of the deal was to have that car.
This thread is to avoid dragging the other telly-car related threads off topic too much...
So who were those early bad influences?
I was a massive fan of
Jim Rockford. Cool in the face of danger, drove a Firebird and - HE HAD A TELEPHONE ANSWERING MACHINE!
oh and here he is in action
The reverse spin turn has forever been known as a "Rockford" due to him doing at least one in every car chase!
More?
Jack Lord in Hawaii Five-0 as Steve McGarrat
I still ache for a big black Mercury Marquis. As the series ran on the models became later but the '68 is the one for me.
I loved Starsky & Hutch.
I loved the Gran Torino
I don't love the prices they fetch although they recently seem to be getting more sensible.
We're the Sweeney son and we haven't had our dinner
Before all the high profile convictions made in the 70s and early 80s got overturned as unsound this is how I thought coppers aught to all be.
The Professionals!
Bodie and Doyle righting the wrongs of the world in fast, rear drive performance cars. Usually Fords. Awesome.
The Streets of San Francisco
You even get a video link for this one...
one of many shows which made a young me think 70s Ford LTDs and Galaxies were cool
In action!
And Dukes of Hazard, naturally...
I dread to think how many ended up banana shaped following jump stunts...
BJ and The Bear
I challenge you not to have that curse word going on in your head all day now...
I was also a big fan of Lee Majors as The Fall Guy!
Its a truck, its a sports car, its just cool.
Jesus, they just killed another Dodge Charger!
Oh, I have the box set of
CHiPs!
Estrada or Nada!
I never wanted a bike really, but I loved that show when I was a kid (before I realised how G-A-Y it is and now I love it all the same LOL) but I loved the freeway shots, all the cool cars in shot and the police cars were all big Mopars.
This...
is a real California Highway Patrol speed enforcement car.
One I swear only I can remember is Emergency! which was a fire department / paramedic type drama. I had a model of the Dodge Powerwagon that the hero crew drove but nobody else seems to remember
here's a similar engine
I was never actually that huge a fan of Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) but I loved and still love the Vauxhall Victor in it
I was a huge fan of The Avengers but not so much about the cars as about Emma Peel LOL
Last up
Pintos can be cool!
However Pinto car chases were stretching things too much even for US TV in the 70s and most of the chase scenes involved Mustang IIs. Usually a Ghia. This one features a Cobra II at least it had a V8. Its still a 30 MPH car chase on an empty road though LOL. When watching this clip remember this was meant to be a drama not a comedy.
Charlies Angels also featured some of the most unlikely chase cars like stretch lincolns, Caddy Eldorados, and, erm, Mustang IIs
Kelly was my fave Angel.
Here she is in her beige Mustang II Ghia.
Enjoy
