Ah Al!! Cheers for you input man, thought about throwing this up on the caddy forum but fuess I don't have to now ^thing is I didn't wanna go injection due to extra expense etc, thing is I've already got the carbs (32mm zxr 400) and exhaust manifold, kinda dismissed the turbo route as I thought it would take extra work! Cheers Tom! Learn something new everyday! Tom, with forced induction the bike carbs are waste of effort, the extra air the carbs will flow on a N/A engine will be irelivent on a "low cost" supercharged setup, it will just make it very complicated and tuning/timing will be a major ball ache If you have the carbs and are determined to use them, then junk the low compression engine you have for a multi-valve HC engine. A 9a or 6a 2.0 16v with a 1.8 kr inlet cam will see you in the 160-170bhp region and would be mighty screamer in the MK1. Yes there are better engines out there, but with a VW unit there will be no fabrication involved as this will go in on your original mounts and bolt up to your 020 4E box As for your 1.5, you would be suprised how little it would cost to turbo it using mainly used parts, and megasquirt is sooo cheap for what it does, this also gives you the option to use a supercharger with the ability to get the fueling & timing spot on

ok guys ive been doing some research and some digging, as previously suggested the r5 gt carb looks my best bet, ive got rid of the bike carbs and I'm watching a few small chargers on ebay etc if all goes well next payday will be an intersting one, lol, pipe work, brackets will be fine, tensioner may prove tricky as will the pulley to run the charger, so any ideas folks? g40 pulley?
next on the list is fueling, there is a chap on edition38 whos turbo'd a 1.3 n/a lump and uses a twin port vacuum canister dizzy would this be enough, will i need an uprated fuel pump?
any more info would be great thanks

not sure what has already been said, just skim read
if the engines are similar to the 1272 series, found in polos and golfs, they can handle up to about 1 bar comfortably (obviously G40 can handle a little more)
as for a fairly simple turbo set-up. get the turbo/fuel system from a R5 turbo. they use a solex carb, which need very little modification (think it's a matter of shortening the mounts) to fit the golf solex manifold.
you would need a custom exhaust mani to the turbo, then pipes etc. but all can be had fairly cheaply.
if you have a look on edition38, there's a guy on there who has done this to a 1272 in a mk1 scirocco

please excuse the thread revival but i thought i might aswell have all the info consolidated into one thread, this build is back on!
i have bought a freshly refurbished g40 g-lader, g40 alternator and crank pulleys, currently i am sourcing a g40 mounting bracket, an r5gtt carb and FPR and a bosch twin port vacuum canister
heres the plan:
modify the inlet manifold to take the r5gtt carb, bolt up the g40 pulley to the engine and alternator (water pulley might get abit of attention to make it a twin pulley) modify the g40 bracket to fit the mk1 block move my oil pressure sensor down to the oil filter housing and use the outlet on the side of the head for the chargers oil feed weld an oil return fitting onto the sump fit twin port vacuum canister to the distributor, dizzy is already converted to electronic ignition i.e accuspark kit that replaces points and condensor, so should be ample plumb it all up and tune it and i should be good to go
my only issue that ive been made aware of is that when the throttle is closed pressure will build up to the max the g40 can put out but this will cause it to idle too high, anyone got any ideas on this?
cheers

done abit more looking, and i think ill use a BOV or recirc valve but if anyone else has a better solution i am still very interested as these will only open when pressure reaches a certain point, i could really do with a bypass valve that stays open whilst the butterfly is closed but I'm not sure what is available!

Hello, it's been six years since your last activity. How's the JB doing?? Any updates? I got a JB also on a mk1 jetta and I'm very thankful to this thread to find out that the mk2 gti 8v camshaft fits into my engine because I ordered it recently by mistake. (Seller advertised it as 1.6 mk1 gti camshaft). I also bought some good condition Yamaha R1 carbs. Hopefully I'll finish my poor bodywork in order to get them installed at the mechanic. I wouldn't stick my hands into these things but I'm trying to get as much info as I can I also red about the Malpassi Fuel Regulator, but can't I actually get any good quality Fuel Pressure Regulator? I'm kindly waiting for your replies, guys

an ABF is a great engine straight out of the box, although you could mess on with all of this, why not use a 1.8T all of the conversion is well documented online and looms are available
