well, I'm knackered! I got it to the 8ball though, as these pics attest- I had a lot on doing it though, not helped by me being ill for a couple of days either. I got the other shock mount done- and then had a right game on getting the tyres to seal on the wheels properly- it was flaky lifting paint on the rim beds doing it, so I ended up removing two of the tyres again and bare-metalling them to get them to seal. fingers crossed they're all good now, ile find if theyve gone down after the weekend. it seems my sumpguard is good at collecting gravel off my landlords driveway- I iz steeling your driveways, one piece at a time! [/johnnycash] there was an incident involving me not really being with it due to the flu, some ramps, a trolleyjack and a non-working handbrake - good job its so low you can barely see it. and at least its a perfectly symmetrical dent i suppose i can hide it with the front plate too (when i get round to fitting it). well, we set off in convoy at 7pm to the 8ball, my exhaust 'clearancing' itself on the way, in a shower of sparks! (sorry toby!) by the time we got to the petrol station 2 miles away, I had no indicators, no dash illumination, and my foglights were on permanently so no one could tell if I was braking or not. it appears the wiring gremlins are still very much living in the lada. after some playing around I managed to get the fogs to go off (unplugged the switch), and went on the way with the GPS dashboard on my phone for guidance. my exhaust about stopped throwing sparks by the time we got there. luckily, ive got this lot waiting to make up a new one, as the one on is about dead anyway even before I remove it with the floor- 2" stianless tooob, a 2" cherrybomb, and a 2" outwardly rolled tip to replace the chavtastic 3" one on there. should sound alreet once its together oh and my rear bumper matches the front now too-

so, today, in at attempt to lose some of the wirng gremlins, i took the dash apart (again). when i got it, all the screws that shoud have been holding the dash together were in the ashtray, so id refitted em all when id done the other wiring. there were literally only 3 screws stopping the dash falling off! i only had to remove half of them again to sort everything out- at least i knew where they all were i suppose! first job, dash illumination. i started with this as i was pretty sure it would be easy, and i was right. i guessed it would be this switch causing the problem (the one on the right)- which is the the dimmer rheostat to turn the gague illumination up/down, as it always seems to be these at fault when dash illumination fails on any retro car. one quick bypass wire made up and the rheostat is out of the system, and the dash illumination is permanently wired to its brightest setting and working just fine. ive never, ever felt the need to dim my dash lights anyway in any car ive ever had, so I'm not sure what the point of that function is really. anyway this is what i made to do the job- simple and effective. next was the indicator wiring. i checked if the hazards still worked, which they did, which told me the fuse and relay were ok, so i decided it was something to do with the switch or it wiring. after removing whats left of the steering column shroud, i found that in yet another case of wiring bizarreness, the main indicator feed to the switch had been cut in half then twisted back together not once, but twice, each about 2 inches apart! this was taped over, but had worked loose and fried the short piece of wire between the 2 joins, so i threw it away and soldered in a new section- once it was taped back up, they all work fine again. after swapping the foglight switch, thats now ok too. the illumination on it doesnt worth though, although there is a serperate light for that as well. so to celebrate that success, i wired in the tacho that i had got off james (jrevillug) a couple of days before, so i know what revs my motor is doing as with the silly litte tyres ive now got fitted the speedo is waaaaay off, and i don't particularly want to blow it up by over-revving it. the tacho is just a cheap little 70s/80s style black plastic pod mount 80mm item, like the TIM ones, but fits in with the interior perfectly. i ran a long wire to the coil via the original main loom route, an earth down to my new earth point id set up under the dash frame for the stereo, spliced the illumination wire into the rheostat bypass loop so i didnt have to chop any other wires, then took the power feed from the stereo feed id spliced in. it was all soldered and taped, then the tacho screwed to the top of the dash next to the speedo binnacle (to attempt to hide the crack in the side of it a bit ) and the wires threaded through the top dash grille. all done- fits in quite well with the steering wheel (which i still need to repaint) and the rest of the interior. quite 'period' i think. shame about the modern stereo really, i think i need to find something more appropriate.

That does look proper Isn't it an issue if stones get stuck between the guard and the sump as a small(ish) tap on the guard will send the stone though the sump? not sure how you could stop the stones getting there in the 1st place mind

Not gonna lie, this is easily the BEST Lada I've ever seen! But... the scrub angle left on your suspension means it's gonna be.... interesting... if you get a flatty whilst driving

speedy88- cheers! paul- yeah it was throwing a few sparks, mostly clearanced by the time I got there james- its an even better match than I expected, thanks very much. craig- I suppose its theoretically possible- you really need to see this sump plate in the flesh to appreciate its unbendable-ness though! the sump is steel, so even the scenario your suggest shouldnt hurt it like it would an ally one as it'll dent rather than crack- as long as theres a first line of defence to stop it grinding/dragging, I should be fine (famous last words!) manicmunky/doninphi/slacker- thank you all chairchild- the scrub line is a bit tight, but it would be on anything this low- I can get away with one flat tyre without dragging, but not two.
