Here is my Mini, as it was many moons ago when I bought it in 2003... This car park at Loughborough Uni has now been built over - sad times You will also see in this photo an old Cortina that used to belong to Mr Bower (phoenixmk2escort I believe) as well as various other classics owned by people who were members of the Motor Club when it was awesome... Hopefully I will get to posting the long and winding story of what the little thing has been through over the years and eventually get to where it is today and where it is going to all end up... But we'll start off with one little photo for tonight and go from there ;D

As you can see it was originally running (curse word) drum brakes all round, a (feisty) 998 along with 6" Weller wheels, massive wheel spacers and ancient Dunlop SP70's... So the first upgrade was a set of 10" Mamba alloys, which are lovely lovely lovely, and some actual tyres... And of course after a good thrashing to actual death it eventually had to have another 998 cos the first one kinda... died...

well......... to cut a long story short between the photos there is a whole lot of rust, a new bodyshell, a hurried rebuild, a crashed mk3 Capri 2.8i, a hurried recomissioning, and a full on 3 day respray (thank god it was sunny!!) and the bumper just had not ben fitted, I think largely because the paint was still wet/only just dry when I had to drive from Lufbra to Northampton ready for work the next day...

Oh, forgot this photo, the lovely interior.. So after my placement year I managed to save enough for a set of disc brakes up front which meant a new set of wheels cos the mambas didn't have clearance for the 4-pot Minispares alloys... although some of them needed refurbishing, hence the odd revo's on the front and mambas on the back. While on my placement year I also fitted a roll cage, snapped a timing chain, and had some thieving gits prise my filler cap off and leave me with just enough fuel to get to the petrol station at the top of my road...

hahaha, yes, I believe that M535i is being rebuilt but I may have my wires crossed... Otherwise we go onwards with the tale, so the second re-spray started because I wasn't happy with the first one and I had some cans of Rover Eclipse Blue kicking around in my garage.. I decided to start at the front and do a bit at a time... Then I went on a trackday with Miser Bower, it was an ace day, but a very bad thing happened on the way home - there was a roundabout, a slight hesitation, a distinct lack of instant braking and a close up of the back end of Bower's Escort - which resulted in the nicely resprayed front end being duffed in, along with a headlight, the grill, the nice over-rider front bumper and the newly fitted 'proper' bonnet. Although, not all bad, the bonnet fitted much better after a 'slight tap'... After pushing this all out and squaring the front up a bit I carried on driving it around for a bit, then I changed jobs and took some time off and decided to complete the respray I started with the front end... Out with the engine so I could repaint the engine bay Much tidier ;D Then on with the respray...

Then various bad things happened, firstly, I found a massive hole in the boot hinge panel which after a bit of poking about led to the entire boot floor and rear seat pan, hinge panel, rear valance and large sections of the rear inner wheelarches and floors being replaced, then I finally completed the respray and painting the interior and was part way through the rebuild when I got knocked off my push bike which led to nearly a year of no progress...
To cut a long story short it was back on the road for a bit, then the front wheel bearings died (no wheel centres, not good!!) and it was back in the garage for quite some time but it is back on the road now!! Yay!!

Where are we today then, well, here is the spec, starting at the front; Wipac spotlights, halogen headlight conversions, 1293 engine, Swiftune 5 cam, Twin 1" 1/4 SU's with trumpets and filter socks, electronic 'pointless' ignition, standard g'box with 3.1 diff ratio. GP 2 narrow arches, 10" Revolution alloys with Yokohama A-008R tyres, Minispares 7.5" 4-pot alloy disc brakes up front, Tilton screw-type brake balance adjuster, spaced rear drums. Fully adjustable suspension front and rear with Kayaba gas shocks. Stainless a-panel and rear quarter strips, Stainless mirrors, clear window glass all round, sun roof, fixed rear quarterlights. Custom interior - Astra SRi front seats, custom door cards front and rear, re-trimmed rear seats, blue front seatbelts, custom headlining. 6-point bolt in roll-cage with padding. Hands-free Bluetooth stereo with 13cm speakers in rear parcel shelf, 6"x9" speakers under rear seat, amplifier in boot. Otherwise, it is finished in Rover Eclipse Blue with a pure white roof. As always, there is plenty of work left to do so... watch this space and I'll update with how it is going along, first thing to do is cover the holes punched in the bottom 'outer floor' by the MOT tester good job I have three layers........

Looking good mate, nice to see those spots are getting some use - also liking the Ring petrol station shot, didn't have a copy of that one. Though now you've gone and made me miss the bloody Escort again! And more welding on the edge of the floor? Ah mini's how I love them, that was the last job I did for someone at work, welding up bloody mini floor to sill areas! Enjoy ;D

Only, since the floor is three layers thick and it passed the MOT after they had punched the hole I'm just going to fibreglass over it to stop the water getting in... To do a proper job welding the floor on my Mini would basically require a whole new floor pan and sills.............. So I'm just going to nudge it along for as long as I can in its current condition...
And yes, spots are great - when they're working - one decided that it didn't like being on any more so I'm going to have to have a look at that... I miss the Escort too, same as I miss my Capri even more now you're got an ace one so we'll call it evens :-P

Nice looking car, gotta love a mini! Looks lost at that petrol station but I think I'd choose it over most those cars anyday!

well yes, I don't know if there was a test day or experience day on or something but I thought this was too good a shot to miss!!
Also, I forgot to say, my name is Simon and as far as I may be new on the forum, I've known Andrew Bower since he started at uni in 2002 - it is his fault I brought my first classic car (Mk 3 Capri 2.8i - with NO RUST!!) and everything since then is history...
Otherwise, jobs list for the time being: - Finish roof gutters so I can fit the seam trim - Modify and fit the RHS front wing seam trim to match the other three - Repair the other floor that was holed by the uncaring MOT man to prevent water (and hence rust) ingress - Possibly think about starting to actually finish the rest of the bodywork, particularly the bonnet - Fit passenger side window winder now returned after being broken and fixed by said uncaring MOT monkey...
I'll let you know how it goes, and I'll try to get some photos as well but who knows...

Got the floor down so it is now waterproof, I have a photo of the hole that was created by the MOT tester, I didn't think they were supposed to use sharp items... Otherwise, I got the window winder fitted and start on the chrome trim strip - it was the devils own job to get it even close but nearly there, had a load of stuff to do in the house so I didn't get everything finished... I'll upload the photo of the floor later on...
