We use a pug 405 estate as our work vehicle, does 30,000 miles a year at 55mpg with very little drama. Do love the turbo diesel, people expect you to be slow but in the right gear and revs it flies!
We got it at 127,000 is now on 167,000, still a away off our last one which had done 500,000 or so before being written off! She needs some tlc, but she will get it!
She isnt slammed tho, could change the exhaust back box with it on a kerb!
EDIT: these do seem to be used by builders, the last two we had have been used to transport rubble etc. Interior seems to be inexplicably flimsy and hard wearing at the same time.

ooh good thread ... i'm getting some serious wantage for one of these in estate form to replace the van ... just been reading nothing but good things about the diesel turbo too .... and somewhere i read they are quite good at not rusting? that would make a change ! the pics of one dropped also shows the potential....

we got one here we use and abuse daily and we love it to bits.. its a 405 GLTD had all the toys once apon a time but they ahve begun to die, the aircon don't work as it needs a condensor or something changing (previous owner told us this) the indicators play up so you have to have the relay hanging out the steering column to give a tickle when its upset, and the cables on the drivers window went.. oh and I left the battery off and put the wrong code into the radio and now all it does is say "SECURITY" across the display in big letters no matter how long you leave the ignition on.. would I change it for anything else? not on your nelly... bought cheap, has been cheap to use, and rarely fails the mot.. a fantastic car, yes we have also been told the 406 was a poor followup to it sorry for the curse word pics but I got it stickered for OH for valentines day as she does lurcher racing.. you get the idea..

Always had a soft spot for the 405. When my parents got divorced, and my father bought the Amazon (that I now own), my mother got a 405 GRD estate, which she had for the next four years. Far from quick (no turbo....), but handled so much better than the Volvo 945 SE Turbo that she had previously!! My in-laws out in NZ have a Mk1 saloon (think it's a 1.6 but not sure - definitely carb rather than injection though), and we borrow that whenever we visit. Quite tempted by an estate, if I ever need to buy another car.

they do handle remarkably well, I re-did all the rubbers in the front suspension when we first got ours and the difference was startling...

Yes people always seem surprised how quickly i can hustle mine around roundabouts!
Another great thing is that they don't rust, our current one has very little, just a tiny bit of rust and the rear sills. My parents previous pug that had done 500,000 miles had only small patches there.
So solid galvenised body and strong mechanicals, perfect workhorse really!

everyone i know who owns one says they are brilliant handling. my mates dad had 405s for years but then took the plunge for a 406. whilst he likes the 406 he says there's nothing that could beat the handling on the 405. don't disagree either. He's what I would call a "keen" driver and took corners at probably slightly faster than they should be taken, but the 405 absolutely loved it and held its own.
