One of the best things about Rallycross is the variety of cars, especially lower down the field, I love the fact that in one of those videos above there's a Lada Samara battling away against the Fiesta's and 205's. I kept replying the 205 doing an Irish wheelie in the Knockhill vid... *n

Isn't that indecently beautiful RS200 the Pike's Peak car rather than a rallycross one? Chalk me up as another who used to love watching the rallycross on World of Sport as a kid in the late 70s/early 80s. Only time I've seen it 'live' was in Belgium in about 1984, when we stumbled across a local event with separate one marque races for 2CVs, Beetles and Renault 4s. Mun & Dad just dumped me there with my camera while they went and did something less interesting with my sister for the day. Heaven knows what happened to all the photos I took? Iirc, it's Pat Dorans old one. The running gear now resides under a Fiesta shell I think.

Yes, Pat Doran's 'new' RS200 was originally developed over 1996-97 for Dieter Knuttel to compete in the European Hillclimb Championship with Avon sponsorship (Knuttel was the German distributor for Avon). After many years on the hills, Knuttel sold it on to Gabat Tuning in Austria a few years ago, who recently sold it to Pat. The 'Mach 2' car that was built for Pikes Peak is indeed it's sister car. Both cars were built by Graham Hathaway and are based on works-spec Evo tubs with new front and rear tubular subframes (converted to single shocks and inboard front suspension on the Knuttel car). Similar modifications were applied to 'Rosie' (Pat's original car) when it was first brought out of retirement in 2001 (the front splitters are made from plywood). Pat has owned 'Rosie' almost all her life. She was originally built as one of the works 'Evo 2' cars for Ford by Gordon Spooner Engineering in preparation for the WRC. When Group B was cancelled almost all of the Evo 2 cars found their way into rallycross. Pat had a promising career as a rally driver (at the wheel of a Sierra Cosworth), but wanted to switch to rallycross. In 1990 he obtained Rosie (with some help from Ford) and they made their debut in the British Rallycross season , initially in white but later with green 'Works' stripes and Bow Waste Paper sponsorship. They made an instant impact, and their first big win came the following season where Pat and Rosie won the British Rallycross Grand Prix. Ford and Q8 Oils then stepped in as sponsors, and Pat and Rosie went on to compete in the 1992 European Championship, winning the French round and finishing the season in 2nd place. Unfortunately the Group B cars were barred from the European Championship in 1993, so Ford set Pat up with an Escort Cosworth and Rosie went into retirement for the first time. Pat and Rosie came out of retirement in 2001 to compete in the British Rallycross Championship, appearing the in the white\yellow\green colours with sponsorship by Acorn and Caterpillar (as in the above pic). They won the championship in 2002, but the following couple of seasons (with a change to Hydrex sponsorship in 2004) were marred by unreliability. For the 2005 season Rosie was retired and Pat drove an Escort WRC (while the Fiesta was in development). Rosie was sold to the Irish collector and driver George Tracey who had her rebuilt (in the process it was found that her tub had delaminated and only the rollcage was holding it together) He used her for a couple of events but Pat had a change of heart and bought her back in 2008, with his son Liam driving it in that years championship with Hydrex sponsorship (and Pat driving it in a couple of non-championship events). Rosie then went into her current retirement spell (apart from a one-off drive for Ollie O'Donovan at the end of the 2009 season). She was refettled aftwewards and was present at the 2010 Autosport Show: There were rumours in 2010 about Pat taking her to Pike's Peak, but the plan changed when the new car arrived (as it's already purpose-built for hillclimbing).

I apologise if I've missed it but what is your background, are/were you involved in Rallycross or just a loyal follower? Thanks (and hi everyone, by the way). I'm not involved, just a motorsport enthusiast with a particular interest in Ford and rallycross. I was just at the right impressionable age when the Group B cars found a home in rallycross - I wish we had satellite TV and the internet back then as the best we could hope for were highlights of the British Championship or the British Grand Prix in Grandstand. It's only when you see videos of the European Championships of the late 80s/early 90s with the epic battles between Schanche, Alamaki, Nittymaki, Holm, Rantanen, Gollop and co. you can see what we were missing.

Wasn't there a feature on the Knuttel Avon car in CCC back in the day...? *n It was the August 1998 issue (it's where my information came from ). They did a feature with Graham Hathaway on the Knuttel car and the newly-completed Mach 2 car.

Well you're definitely a welcome member, stick around. I was just that little bit too young, but I do have a vague memory of watching it on the television with my Dad. I also remember being very taken with Will Gollop's 6R4 at the age of about 5 at the Autosport show. Am I right in thinking the 6R4 was replaced with a Peugeot 309?

Absolutely adore rallycross! I recall many Saturdays happily watching Grandstand whilst attempting to build a Lego interpretation of a 6R4!
On a related note, I believe that Will Gollop started his career driving a Sprint-powered Triumph Toledo 2dr. Does anyone know any more, or might this just be hearsay? I've seen one blurry picture, but have never found anything conclusive.

Yes, the 309 was built for the 1993 season (as the 6R4 was barred from the European Championship): It had a 500+hp 205 T16 engine, but didn't handle very well. He then built the 306 for 1994 and transferred the running gear into that: The 306 is one of the most successful cars ever in the British Championship, with Gollop taking 2 titles in it (1996 & 97). it was then sold to Helmut Holfeld who won the 1998 championship. He then sold it to John McCluskey who ran it for a couple of seasons, and then sold it to George Tracey (both of whom won events in it). George then sold it to Ollie O'Donovan, who used it to win the 2007 Championship. It's still competing now with Andy Scott. The twin-turbo 6R4 is now owned by Ken Sims and used to be a regular at Shelsley Walsh, though health issues have stopped him driving now unfortunately:

Think Gollop's Silkolene livery might be one of my all time favourites in any form of motorsport, nice to hear his cars are still in reasonably regular use too. I'm guessing Gollop has retired now?

Just back from watching the qualifying at Croft, highly recommended as a cheap day out for motor fans Comments later, but first some pics ;D What's not to like Well, what else would you do with a Lotus ;D No point in having a man-sized turbo if you don't let the rest of pits know about it ;D Driving school fleet Good bits : cheap (£8 for the day), local (about 10 miles for me), decent weather (no rain just a couple of quick showers), and it's a 2-day International event so plenty of top-spec cars and drivers. The hi-lights ? Fantastic performances by a chap called Per Eklund, (leading one heat for 2 laps, and winning the "B" final after leading from the start According the the commentator he's 65 and has been winning races since 1964 Lots of quality driving in all classes, including a few saves from "unasavable" situations. Less impressive bits ? Publicity and organisation were very low profile, full credit to the commentator who managed to keep things entertaining even tho' he didn't know the running order for the last few races I found lots of handy info - including start times for today (which aren't mentioned in the official publicity material ) at www.ten-tenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=130144Marshalls who didn't know which parts of the track were open to the public for viewing (or worse yet - gave out wrong info and directions ) didn't help. A great day out and very entertaining. If it was a club show it would have been fantastic, it just seems very odd that it's a 2-day international and the publicity and organisation were very non-pro

No point in having a man-sized turbo if you don't let the rest of pits know about it ;D Derrick Jobb's RS2000 4x4 - a car with a long history in the British and Irish RX scene (built in 1993 for Barry Squibb, then sold to John Haffey, then to Helmut Holfeld and then on to Derrick). Here is a pic of when Squibby had it, with the legend that is Per Eklund close behind: These are the best things about rallycross, with the close competiton and short races it's set up for maximum entertainment for spectators (and TV viewers, as that's what it was invented for). I mentioned Per Eklund being a legend, and it's amazing that he's still competing at the top level after all these years. Have a clip of a classic race-long battle between Per and Will Gollop: Unfortunately you have also experienced the downside of rallycross (in the British Championship, at least) - the organisation of the events is a bit on the shambolic side. The European Championship events (the British round is usually at Lydden, when there is one) are much better organised, to be honest. There was a split in the British scene a few years ago and a rival championship was set up with the aim to try and make things more professional to attact more spectators and competitors, but there is barely a room for one championship in the UK and the new one died after a couple of years. Still, at least you have found that ten-tenths is the place to go to find out what's really going on! Have few more clips from the mid 80s to the late 90s - the golden years of rallycross:

Will gollops 309 shell was bought by someone a good 8 years ago on the rallye register forum and he had plans of putting a s2000 engine in it, never knew what happened to it after that.
