As I have time to work on only one car at a time, I decided to make one thread for my cars. This should have been a single car thread, but as always, things kind of escalate once you've biten the bullet and bought a project car... I always think a picture says more than a 1000 words, and prefer to post a lot of pics of all phases. If old rusted french cars is not your cup of tea, stop reading now. This story started on 30.8.2009, when checking the "for sale"-ads on Finnish Renault club sites, I saw a R11 Turbo. Got to have it. In Finland these are rare, haven't seen one for sale since. Went to check the car, and it was "ok". The body had a lot of rust, the interior was good and the engine seemed ok (with the 200m test drive). PhII front not as "aggresive as the double lamp phI. Work to be done on the bodywork, rear axle torsion bars dead... Interior was nice. Off we go! The car towing is my daily driver, Laguna 2.0 Turbo This is the "octopussy". Immediately bought a new four-bar rear axle from a friend and wings which were found from a local store. Having no idea what is to come, this is the "ignorant fool"-smile. What follows is then a description on how to NOT do a project... If I were to start a project again, this is NOT the way I would do it. But you have to start somewhere! And let's already state it here at the beginning, I am no car mechanic, I work in the IT and started this so I could learn how to do things myself...

September 2008 - November 2009So I had this great idea: I'll dismantle the car to pieces! And ofcourse, this means I removed everything and separated everything to smallest possible pieces. Not a good idea. Now as I am trying to gather the pieces together, it is challenging to remember. I took a LOT of photos, and marked each wire and cable etc. I removed everything, even these cables later on... I had a good "garage", which was a room in an old factory. Had to pull down a wall and create doors to get the car in. I purchased a Renault 9 for the front end and some other miscellaneous pieces. I bought it for 50e, and drove it 200km. Still have the motor in my backyard, it's the basic 1.4. I also purchased some period wheels, 15" Renault Turbines (Speedline). Need some work but look good. I had the shell sandblasted by a friend. I have never welded before, so again one of my great ideas, I bought a TIG-welder from Ebay. If I need to learn, why not learn properly since the beginning! Even if I say it myself, the outcome is not that bad (in the picture just putting the tacks), had a friend teach me the basics. I also read a lot of welding books. What I didn't notice here, is that I could have cut the spare piece a little bit lower. Learn by doing...

December 2009 - September 2010Moved 300km, bought a house with very small garage, renovated house, had kid. Progress on project, zero. October 2010 - March 2011A friend had a 11 "Turbo" project, which was going well until he decided to call it off. He sold the motor and was selling the rest of the car. It's originally an Renault 11 1.0TC, so not an original turbo. I thought that as I want to drive something soon, I would by the car and put the current motor in it. As it is not an original turbo, I can do all the changes I want, no need to worry about originality or ruining a restoration. While this car waited in the garden I got to work on the initial project. Having moved the shell in a trailer for 300km, in the snow (even with some protection), and waiting for nearly a year, meant that the shell surface rusted. Should have put some protective coating on it before the transfer, know that now. Ouch, learning while doing is generating a lot of extra work! So I went through the whole bodyshell and parts (undercarriage, rear axle) with a drill and wirebrush. Here's the rear axle under work... ... and with Hammerite silver. After many nights and weeks, the whole shell is done! Now I could swap the cars, so out goes the shell... ... and in comes the rolling car.

March 2011 - July 2011Now some work to be done on the motor. It has 220tkm so some work on it was on the menu. The motor was really filthy and full of curse word and oil, so a couple of nights was used just to clean it up. Some new / service parts were acquired, 270 fast road cam, stiffer valve springs and uprated bolts from CGB Motorsport, reconditioned carburettor with larger needles etc., plugs, seals, bearings, chain, waterpump etc. As a reminder, all this is again new to me so all of the following steps were done using a lot of time and reading Haynes manual again and again... Cylinder head cleaned and skimmed. Replacing the bearings on the lower end. Some of the friction(?) bearings were in such condition that there was practically no oil channels left. End seal changed, some marks/scratches visible. Put some matt satin coating (not paint) which should lower the temperatures. Should be better than wrap, because if the wrap gets moisture -> rust. Put also some on the exhaust side of the turbo.

I also wanted to do some visibile work, so did something on the interior. Added suede steering wheel. Removed everything from the rear. Added black carpet on the rear seat section, and created a panel on the rear with black carpet. Created some fixings from steel for the seats which are from a 5GTT. Added Schroth-seatbelts which should be quite safe. I asked from a friend to do a photoshop for me on how the outcome should be. Inspiration is from the GrA rallycars, but the problem was the existing black and white paint on the car. Bought the vinyls and some stickers from ebay. The most difficult to find was the renault logo for the roof, that was found from France.

July 2011 - August 2011Needed to do some work on the driveability. I must say that working on rusty cars is not a thing I like that much... Needed to change the bearing on one side. Probably a skill I will need in the future also. Had some help with the work I was thinking of attacking the triangles with the drill+wirebrush combo, then I found out that they were around £20 each in ebay... Ordered those, changed the new motor supports, removed the rust from the undercarriage(?) and painted it black (zinc primer), and same thing for the stabilizer bar. Got some rims, but they had this red line. Ordered some yellow wheel tape from ebay and put it on the rims. I have ordered a new suspension setup including springs and dampers, but it has not yet arrived. So ordered some lowering springs to start with.

October 2011As my wife will need the laguna during winter, I needed a daily driver. As an avid reader of RetroCar mag, The obvious choice was then an old car, why not a Renault 11! This is an -86 TXE with some nice options like remote controlled central locking, leather steering wheel, electric windows in front etc. It's equipped with 1.7 F2N engine. Bonnet needs work/replacing, bumper and other plastics reconditioning. Interior is in good shape So in the front bumper, the turning signal lamps and fog lights were a little bit rusted....

November 2011I took the motor (of the first car), and now dropped it in the second (black&white one). Now, I'm working on the electrics, as the motor is -88 and the car is -84. This means for example that the motor wiring harness does not fit physically the plug on the car, and ofcourse the wires would be different. So now I went through the motor wire harness and identified all of the wires. What better time to do it than a saturday evening with wife and kid sleeping. Now I will need to check the wires on the car. I ordered from ebay this connection tester which will help in the task. Waiting for that to arrive to continue on this.

Is the 11 Turbo really an original (i.e. sold new in Finland) Finnish car? If so it must be mega rare as all the 'sporty' models like Golf GTI, Escort XR3, Kadett GSI were ridiculously expensive back in the good old days over here. The TXE looks familiar, one guy I know had one the same colour, licence number AXx-xxx, don't remember exactly.

That's why it's more of a restoration, and this second Turbo is for fun. Still need to buy a second motor though, but that I already have in sight.

Nice motors. I've definately not seen any R11 Turbo's prowling around the mean streets of Finland. Seems quite a rare car Looking foward to seeing it take shape.

As we are starting to get snow here, I decided the TXE would need a (new) remote central locking. As there is a button on the centre console to lock/unlock the doors, and also the hazard warning light switch, the installation was quite straighforward. There is a wire for a starter kill installation, which I will probably install soon. Also need to sort out the driver's side rear door and passenger side front door, as the doors won't lock or unlock electrically. The buttons move, but they are probably needing some cleaning and oiling... At the same time, installed extension cord to FM-transmitter. So now the FM-transmitter is hidden under the box, and I can keep the original cassette player and still listen to CarTalk podcasts from my phone. Now I need to go searching to find my old Michael Jackson, Rick Astley and Public Enemy cassettes

Decided to try and learn photoshop a bit, so this is something I would go for with the TXE. However, the bumper is normally grey, and now washed up grey, so I have not yet decided will I paint it black. This would ruin it's originality. Same thing for the plastics on the side, ditch them, paint them or just leave them as is. The only thing I didn't manage was some decent wheels. Some period wheels with a lip would seem nice, maybe with either black or gold center.

^ That picture was a real eye-opener to me. That car actually brings R16 and R20/30 into mind and it bears some real character. Previously it was just another dull looking odd econobox to me Please keep up the very good work, pre-90s Renaults are never going to congest our roads
