I can't agree enough about the reliability issue these cars have, but when they are working they're so much fun. Never driven a williams, only my 1.8 16v, but even the 16v was an animal and massive fun. Like you I've also had a GTI-6 and imho I would pick the GTI-6 over the clio everytime. Probably about the same in speed terms, but I think the 306 is marginally better handling and obviously better built and more reliable. Just found a few pics of my old 16v..

A sound investment.
These shift. I've always wanted a black valver. My Friend had a valver, chipped and usual filter and exhuast. It was quick and held up with most. 140mph no problem.

i worked at a renault dealer when the first williams arrived. mechanics disconnected the speedo/odometer for me-i had a great half hour blast in one that was on trade plates and still in factory wax. one of the best handling, nippy hot hatches ever! win on that one-itll give miles of grin filled motoring

I then wanted to start cleaning the interior as it stinks of wood (the material not the smell of a boner) best quote ever!

On the way back from the MOT station she started to sound a bit too much like a tractor, seems the monster gasket between the manifold and down pipe has seen better days. I managed to get her up on axle stands tonight and have freed off the exhaust, which by some miracle has retained the studs on the manifold and came apart without too much screaming and shouting. I just need to get hold of a gasket and she should soon be sounding better.
I have found that the small size of the clio is particularly beneficial as I can actually work around her in my garage, something not possible when attempting to work on the VR4.

Well she passed the MOT today, it only took the replacement of the rear o/s brake caliper, which turned out to be a pig to do! The little sleeve on the handbrake cable had pretty much fused into the caliper and took a lot of freeing up. The brake fluid was filthy, so will be flushing that through as well as replacing the poorly repaired header tank and what looks to be pretty grubby looking coolant with a salvage item I got from eBay.

Just a quick photo of the exhaust gasket/collar which I ended up sourcing from Renault for a ridiculous price but no motorfactors stocked it: And a little shot of the engine bay:

I rarely comment on here (more of a browser) but when I do it's always on cars that I would never normally think twice about/like that completely blow my car preferences out the window. This is one of them - love it! Keep her sweet

This is one of them - love it! Keep her sweet Thanks very much, I do intend to tidy her up, with that in mind I've ordered some different lowering springs, the current ones must be -60mm, so a set of -30mm Apex lowering springs are on their way, to compensate for the fact that the current setup is rock solid and the wheels catch with only the slightest amount of lock. To date I've managed to get the header tank replaced, with some fresh coolant as well, swapped over the parcel shelf and suit carrier as well as the sun visors. I think the original stereo will soon be heading back in to try and keep the interior original. When I got the car it had a K&N induction kit which was absolutely filthy, I debated giving it a clean up, but spotted a Pipercross one on eBay and with a cheeky bid got it for under £20, so it's not in place, albeit tightly packed in. So, replacement header tank, in looking at the photo prior to the upload I've spotted the Cobra alarm box in the bottom corner of the picture, it's currently on a Clifford one but there are loads of spurious electronics on the windscreen and an additional aerial on the roof that I can't place! The filthy K&N kit: And the replacement Pipercross one: I just need a dry day now so I can tackle the carpet and start to look at the paint.

Well a quick spin in the Clio today graced me with a cold shower of water from the centre console on the headlining, having already sealed the aerial it looks like it's the sunroof that's leaking. So she's now parked under cover in the garage and I'll have to get acquainted with the headlining so I can get the sunroof out to reseal it, a definite must before replacing the carpet, or depending on the weather it may be a bit more of a combined effort to get both done at once. The only good point is that it's given me the incentive needed to get the VR4 out of the garage, so I may get a few miles on it now.

Well, it's a very fiddly job to get to the headlining so that I can get the sunroof out, first off was taking the top of the dash off, then everything from the A-pillar trim to the C-pillar trim, with all grab handles, sun visors, etc. So I've had a bit of a job getting some seized torx fittings out without stripping them but they're all out and it's just the headlining to come out before the real problem can be tackled. I also took the chance to put the original head unit back in...... As she stands at the moment:

I had one of the first Clio 16v's - J995 SRJ as a company car !
I thrashed that thing something terrible for a little over two years and 60K miles.
During my time with it the engine mounts fell apart on a couple of occasions, which lead to an exhaust replacement and the front brake pads and rotors just lasted between services and just before it went back to Lex it started to shimmy at high speed (on the Basingstoke ring road) which was diagnosed as a wheel bearing issue.
Really was a fantastic car, huge personality.....

Well the sunroof has finally surrendered and without destroying the headlining, so I just need to seal the rubber in again and start the process of refitting all of the interior trim!
In other news I've got hold of a replacement o/s wing which is the correct colour for the car.
And I've got a track day at Cadwell Park booked in mid-Feb to have everything ready for............

Well the huge cannon of a backbox is now gone. From this: To this: And I've got hold of a set of steels and put some Federal 595RS-R's on in readiness for Cadwell. The steels need a good clean up but are straight and will do for now. Replacement springs on the front and tracking to come as well as looking at why I've got a pretty spongy brake pedal....

With new discs and pads on the front, the steels on and off to Cadwell we went...... It was a great day, couldn't have asked for better weather and the track is great, pushed the brakes to the limit, so will be looking for some upgraded pads at some stage soon.

Bit of an update on the Clio, since I don't have room to spray undercover and am unsure of what finish I'd leave the car with, she's off on Saturday to have the arches finished off and a couple of areas of rust looked at and tidied up. When I get her back, I'll bleed the brakes again as the pedal has far too much travel following Cadwell Park, give her an oil change and then see about getting another track day booked.

The cambelt is a doddle on them mate, should only take around 3 hours, worth doing the water pump and looking at the condition of the power steering pump while youve got it stripped down. It's got power steering? Isn't that like ordering the vegetarian version of a full house mixed grill..? I love these, one day i'll finally get a turn to have one myself (But i'll fit manual steering).
