How is the turbo currently scavenged? Looks very low? If I can help with any advice on the forced induction side, don't hesitate to ask Hi James, Thanks for the comments on the car, still can't believe how lucky I've been getting the engine! The turbo is very low (like VERY low!) to the point where the oil return is lower than the sump. Not good! This is the side of things I want to address because the current set-up has a pump to feed the oil back to the sump. I want to try and find a way around this and ideally want to investigate getting the turbo into the engine bay. The only problem there is room. Not in the engine bay itself but room to get the exhaust in and out of the engine bay. The engine is so canted over that there really is very little room for any pipework...next to no room from the manifold into the available space. I have some ideas, but want to have a closer look this weekend... ....obviously I'll report back with any findings. If there is anything you might be able to help with I'll be sure to ask. In fact, I am sure there will be something you could help with but can't think of it right now, but when I do...you'll almost certainly be hearing from me Many thanks Dude. bruce, is the new colour the fabulous metallic brown off of the new honda,s? As said before, the colour has been decided and is staying firmly under wraps. ;D Oh, and the car in the photo looks metallic red to me? Maybe I should have gone to SpecSavers!

How is the turbo currently scavenged? Looks very low? The turbo is just about the lowest point on the car. The oil is scavanged by a Facet fuel pump (the little square one), the outlet of which runs through a small oil cooler and back into the sump drain plug.

What a strike of luck with the turbo and coil over set up How about something like this; Don't know if there are any negatives to this mounting, but it might solve your space restrictions?

Beat me to it! ^^ I guess you need a good quality exhaust up to the turbo for the back pressure. I can't wait to see this project really kick off The cramped engine bay reminded me of this mad project over at Passion Ford... A Ka with a 3.0 Vauxhall V6 and a turbo in the boot (as it wouldn't fit in the engine bay). Looks a bit of a mess, but goes to show it can be home-brewed! Room for a turbo? ah... ok... in the boot then? Built into a subframe - With self contained oil system which originally used a scavenge pump but the designer found it too powerful, so I believe he is now using a facet fuel pump. I had considered the rear mount idea (I've seen in on Corvettes in the past) but can't see it gaining anything over the current set-up. I'd still need to run a pump system for the oil feed and I just can't shake the feeling (please correct me if I'm wrong) that really long pipe runs aren't exactly ideal for minimising lag?
If I can make it somehow fit into the engine bay I think it'll generally work a lot better. Might even be able to go the FMIC route too?
I'm hoping to get down to the unit today for the first time since getting the car. I should be able to get some good photos of everything and start working out what space I've got? (or what I don't have!)

The turbo runs on exhaust pulses and they can cancel each other out or degrade once all the pipes are long and merged into one.
Ideal spot for a turbo is way higher up the system, where all the pipes join.
Could you run the exhaust manifold forward (like a TVR!!) and have the turbo in front of the engine? Even a low tech log manifold would do the job.
I'm amazed that a little Facet fuel pump can pump engine oil! That gives me ideas!! :-D

I think you need to see the room on that side of the engine....don't forget it's canted over about 45 degrees! LOADS of space on the inlet side but getting anything through on the exhaust side is going to be a real challenge (probably why it's not been done before, but I'm going to do my best to make it happen!) Moving it forward is my plan (as I've said a number of times) but it's the space, or lack of it, along the inner wing & chassis that'll dictate if it's at all possible. I do have some ideas though....

Could you loop the exhaust under the engine and fit the turbo on the inlet side (the 944 turbos have a similar arrangement) i see room is tight all over though. Keep it simple thats the key. If you get me the numbers off of the turbo (probably on a tag or machined surface on the compressor cover) i may be able to help identify it. Having said that IHI are one of the worst manufacturers for holding info back. Especially if the part number begins with a roman numeral. James

I spoke to my mate about the turbo he was saying that IHI are terrible for info and spares. He reckoned on about £120 to strip, inspect, rebuild and rebalance it if needed aslong as he can get the bits.

Oh...and about the gearbox, there are plans afoot for that too. Something I'm spending a lot of work on right now....fingers crossed for some good news soon (James knows of what I speak) ZF out of a slant 4 Vauxhall or Lotus Sunbeam?

Thanks for the photos Dave, I went to the unit to get some good photos of it yesterday to show the levels of rot and also some shots of the current set-up. You've beaten me to it although I might still put some of my pics up because 'that' eroded crossmember is even worse than we first thought....without any effort, a hell of a lot more metal quite literally fell out of the chassis just while I was brushing all the dirt/weeds out. I don't think it's going to be holding the engine/steering or rear suspension/diff up of its own accord for much longer*
I've also had a play with some of the engine bits and have got some (possibly) promising news. I'll update with all yesterdays (not very) exciting progress when I get the photos uploaded...
* Must remember not to put the Land Rover under the Lotus while it's on the ramp!!

Looks rather crispy under there! What's the story with the donor car then? Did the owner have it as a garden ornament in their rather tidy looking garden for years or something?

Before I get started on the photos from yesterday, here are a few pics I took when the car arrived. I must thank Hardcore, ColonElk and especially MantaPhil for their efforts in recovering the car for me. It's probably the first time I've ever bought such an 'unknown quantity' but I think it's safe to say it paid off? Many thanks guys! The car arrives on the back of Phils awesome transit. This thing makes Kevs truck look concours! It even has a built in shower in the cab!! But the reason for my excitement was the car itself. I love the stance of it and hope to get something along those lines on mine when it's all done (probably lower at the rear) although I feel that the low front is only 50% thanks to the coilovers. The other 50% is more than likely attributed to a completely borked chassis....who cares, it looks GREAT! About 2 seconds after this photo I opened the bonnet to see for myself if the engine really did have a turbo. It did, but you all know that by now. I'm off out today but I'll update with lots of pics from yesterday when I get home.

I'm afraid I don't know any of the story of the car. The guy who was selling it was only acting on behalf of the lady who owned it. It was her husbands car but he passed away a few years ago and it's been sat in her (rather large) garden ever since. I would like to speak to the lady to see if I can find out any info on the car but from the one conversation I did have with her, I don't think she knows a lot about it at all. I do hope to find some of the back story on it though.....I'm working on it. I think the chassis is so rotten from being sat in the garden for so long. I looks like it was quite deep in weeds, grass and brambles. In the pic here I think the area around it had been cleared but I imagine it was pretty much buried deep in the garden greenery at one point judging by the amount of soil/weeds/ivy and other things filling the engine bay and most other parts of the car.

They say that fortune favours the brave and you were brave enough to take a punt on No 2 Elite and you were justly rewarded,excellent result. What ever direction you go in with No1 Elite it will be something special if your previous projects are anything to go by.
The 2 spoked steering wheel is superb,is it standard? I want one.
