I'll edit it a little, but you have got the gist : Ok sounds like its: - get complete lever damper out (You can leave the top part connected to the kingpin to devalve it (I think I did this initially) but the top trunnion bushes (especially the rubber ones these days) barely seem to last any length of time) - remove arm & devalve - refit lever damper plus gaz top platform (you should have longer bolts for these (IIRC the stock ones are too small) - refit arm - loosen the spring pan nuts, remove pan (with the assistance of a jack under it) and refit new springs with the damper platform in the rear wishbone arm. - fit gaz damper -Fit the supplied braided hoses and attach with a P Clip onto the front subframe so they do not catch the dampersForgive me if it seems like I am teaching you how to suck eggs but I figure a near enough complete walkthrough should make life easier .

MOT this afternoon. Have fitted new track rods ends, new steering rack gaiters and fitted the new front springs. they are certainly shorter than the standard springs but have only dropped the nose by 10mm. nose is lowered than the back though, it may settle further.

Congrats on the pass . Nice to see the nose a little lower. I hope the front of the car is not *too* stiff now .

The ride is more composed but still comfortable. steering is just the same though think the springs will settle a bit more. only done 50 miles so far.

Cheers for the advise on the wire wheels. Great news on the MOT! Also depends on what level of finish you want and how much pitting your wires have got. these wires were new in 1990 and have done very little miles since then. there was some light pitting here and there to the outer lips but overral the silver was dirty dull and some minor rust staining. for the level of finish I wanted, it didn't warrant an major prep. as long was they are really degreased and the surface is roughed up, celly goes on nice enough.

I took the spring and plunger assembly out and left mine without oil. It worked fine for the 3 years I drove the car and for the 3 years it spent off the road. Quite a few owners leave them without oil so as to cover up the fact that their dampers are leaking (the lever arms that is) in addition to thinking it would influence the damping rate (although I do not quite see why this is the case). Others believe it stops the inside of the damper rusting up, but again this can be debated if the seals are in good condition and the plunger bolt being back in place. To aid you a little further here is where I placed my P Clip on the 'B (without it fitted it did cause me some grief come MOT time (the flexi pipe was rubbing on the damper): I did have to jiggle about with the twist on the pipe too to ensure it did not catch the damper.

Thanks Chas, thats really helpful In other news, i've found out that the rebuilt engine (fitted in 1986 at 116k miles) that was referred to in the paperwork is a goldseal unit . The engine tag is stamped "48G735E" which is a Unipart/goldseal part number for 18GB "B" series. The "E" refers to it being an exchange purchase. further info here: www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/enginetext.htm#goldsealSo, the car mileage is now 125k and since 1986 the B has only done around 9000 miles on the "new" engine ;D, with 1100 miles done by me since January this year.

Picked this up last night The rocker has to come off anyway as the gasket is weeping oil and the tappets need doing - there is at least one tappet has needs the gap closing up. I suspect that as the engine as only done 9000 miles since it was fitted in 1986, I reckon the rocker has never been off.
