I was horrified that the DVLA are actually more efficient than I am. The new V5C came back and I still hadn't got the car started so I thought best do something. Job 1 - charge battery. Done. ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/Fairmont/IMG_3717.jpg) Job 2. Look at starter solenoid as the starter has been turning real slow and getting the solenoid real hot (smokey!) Feed wire was loose because some previous monkey had put a metric nut on there which slipped off the thread when you tried to tighten it. ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/Fairmont/IMG_4234.jpg) proper AF UNC nut and job done. Job 3. Fuel filter was BROWN. ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/Fairmont/IMG_4235.jpg) Replace. Now car runs and drives. ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/Fairmont/IMG_4242.jpg) w00t. It "needs a service" to run sweet. But that will be next. Also you can look forward to seeing some pics of this on in retrocars magazine at some point as it was being photographed today as part of the "lockups" series ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/Fairmont/IMG_4246.jpg) ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/Fairmont/IMG_4252.jpg) slow progress but meh

Pretty sure it said 'thriftpower' on the valve cover 'thriftmaster' was a chev motor no?
Pedantry aside nice to see it up and running, MOT report soon!?

You are probably right Ed. There was a Chevy Thriftmaster pickup in the 3100 series iirc
Going to do the service today if I get chance. Once it runs sweet and a nasty looking bleb on the a pillar is done then it's up for an MOT
I didn't run it long as I'd only got about half a gallon of "lawnmower petrol" left from the summer... It was running a bit smokey blue but then it could have all manner of oil down the valve stems and stale fuel still in the bowls. It filled the garage with the smell of hycrocarbons and it was running on the drive LOL.

OK, replaced plugs, cap, rotor, and cleaned the carb with Wynns , chucked a couple of gallons of fresh fuel in the tank. The plugs were black and concerningly wet looking on removal ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/Fairmont/plugz.jpg) It still runs bad. In fact the longer it runs the worse it runs. Attempting to adjust the mixture screw makes no noticeable difference. I had an Oldsmobile which idled bad and smoked but was just down to the mixture screw! I noted the mixture screw was all the way in which is odd, but no adjustment helped. Then it wouldn't idle at all. I notice the autochoke didn't seem to be coming off properly (or it has a very long warm up time!) Gah. Basically it runs on 4 or 5 and blows thick, acrid smoke. I've ordered a HT Lead set and a carburettor rebuild kit. Mean time I'm dealing with the worst of the scabs on the body.

Hmmmm, when we finally got it going, it ran really sweet and smooth, (that filter was much cleaner looking) then it went dark and ran like a pig, I'd bet pounds to pence something horrid got past the filter, plus it must have been run dry before, and your jets now look like the London underground in rush hour, that and like you say most of the ignition system looks original...
I'd just blank the autochoke off make it manual until you get it running right, you can't tune a car with that stupid thing screwing with your mixture..

Fair point - it's not opening up anyway, holding the butterfly open picks the RPM up about 300...
I got a rebuild kit for the Carter as Rock had them for £2.60!
Hopefully just a strip and clean..,

![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/Fairmont/filler.jpg) "just a little bit of this and that on the body". Not the best weather to be doing it mind. ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/Fairmont/wires.jpg) New HT leads did not fix misfire. In fact they made matters worse. Eagle-eyed readers will spot I've swapped 4 & 6 here. Impressive blow back... ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/Fairmont/carb.jpg) Carb off and I was going to rebuild this today, this evening, but didn't. Got nattering on the the phone and... red wine and... Another day.

I've been dealing with the rust scab some more ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/Fairmont/aafe1946.jpg) quality masking materials ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/Fairmont/e70a9f93.jpg) Aerosol primer ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/Fairmont/1933a8f6.jpg) also been looking at the carb. Put it through the dishwasher on advice at the Limes but I suspect someone was having me on. Oh well, its lemon fresh now... ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/Fairmont/0a39dbf9.jpg) I've also acquired some proper cop spec hub caps. ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/alistairk/Fairmont/cff4674e.jpg) Moving along slowly. Too slowly. Really I need an MOT on this - this week...

OK, carb back on, battery charged again, dosed with powerstart and...
runs like a bag of curse word still.
Its running too rich and I can't seem to lean it out.
It starts without the choke and it makes more smoke than you'd expect from a diesel under acceleration.
It seems to be running a little less completely awfully than it was before but its still far from right.
Nuts.
I stink of hydrocarbons now, 20 minutes after shutting it off and coming in the house.
curse word thing.
