I don't know what insurance and taxes are like over there but I'd go for an early 80's Corolla with 3TC. Hatch or liftback have good lines. Not too obvious but plenty of grunt. Handling is great with the right shocks and tires. Best drivers car I've ever owned. Don't know much about the Starion but I'll bet it'd be similar.

I've had a Mk1 MR2 and have got a Starion. Both are cracking cars.
MR2s are in plentiful supply - Starions on the other hand are getting as rare as poor quality wobbly children's play pony dung - I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time and pick up a bargain. ;D

Bloody sickening! Front wheel drive?! It goes completely against the character of the car in the name of performance (so why then did he go for front wheel drive, he could probably have saved money by using sturdy rear wheel drive components such as Volvo 7 series, which are in lots of scrappies!) Those newer Astra wheels do nothing at all for it, and did you see the state of that chavved up plastic modern dashboard? In a 60s car? These people need taken out, tortured, beaten to within an inch of their lives and shot repeatedly with an AK47 assault rifle at close range! Ahem.

What about a Sunbeam Talbot? I know you probably won't find a Lotus for that price, but they're sturdy, rear wheel drive, unusual, tunable, could probably have another engine dropped in there without too much hassle, and the rally fraternity will love it, so that takes care of the cool factor. (Not only that but the chavs and neds won't know what's smoking them as they look so subtle! )
