Golf GTI, Pug 205..............why does the 5 GTT always get forgotten about? It doesn't where I'm concerned.... In my opinion the French are the best at building hot hatches and none were better in the 80s and 90s than the 5. They did get a bad reputation for unreliability but that was due to them falling into the price bracket where absolute mongs could pick them up for pennies and abuse them without any maintenance. Then the body kit brigade got their hands on them I was guilty of this myself (see below ) My second gt turbo And despite being blatant self whoring, here's my gorgeous current standard gt turbo. The 1980's was the heyday of hot hatches. Some were good & others not so. Many were FWD fuel injected shopping trolleys with stripey seats & alloys (thats a bit harsh, some of them were/are pretty cool cars) Sadly, the manufacturers more often than not seemed to deliberately tone down the power figures to circa 105 to 115bhp & 0-60 in 8.5secs For me, the quintessential hot hatches were the original late 70's ones....Chevette HS & Lotus Sunbeam. Roadgoing group 4 rally cars. RWD and proper hardcore. ..and a video to prove my point ;D

For me, the quintessential hot hatches were the original late 70's ones....Chevette HS & Lotus Sunbeam. See, to me they were great cars... But although obviously they are hot, and have hatchbacks... They are more Homologation/Rally Specials than a proper hot hatch. Everyone has a different opinion, but IMO a proper hot hatch has to be FWD ;D

No? Oooh yesssss!!!! I've had near enough all the 80's ones listed above bar the renault 5 (which was a similar vein although horrendously unreliable if modified, but super quick and mega cool) and the UNO was a clear favourite. I've had all models of ford Rs hatches as well and none came anywhere near the kick of the UNO. Surprisingly laggy for a small turbo car the kick when you hit 2.5k up to 5750 rpm was awesome, nice close ratio box kept it spinning right the way up to 120mph,ok it would do more but it was pushing it then,no real need either as they never claimed to be a motorway car,but in the street racing days of the early 90's you raced one at your peril. No turbo? Don't waste your time,I ended up waiting for a boy in his mk2 16v golf to catch me just to blow him away again such was the ease of the challenge,xr3i's were embarrassingly slow in comparison,I'd say a non turbo UNO could waste one of those!!! Up to a ton nothing Vauxhall badged back then was much bother, wasting some retard in his manta gte twice round the kingsway was entertaining,he was so sure his 2.0l 130hp motor had the measure he actually waved goodbye to me at the lights, only for me to do the same 1/2 a second later, his missus didn't look impressed. The achillies heel was the gearbox and handling, plus like the 5gtt falling into the hands of mongtards who knew nothing other than to keep turning up the "bleed valve" to get more boost. Loved mine and sold it for a mk1 golf gti which in all honesty was a worse car, older slower but more reliable, although I did love that also,as I tend to with all older stuff hence my love for this site and hatred for ratting up some of these classics.

Not that I'm biased or anything... Owned 3 of them and unless you've driven one, you probably won't get it. I've never met anyone that owned one that has a bad word to say about them (well, perhaps apart from the horrendous rust issues ) Had a mk2 golf 16v and a 306 GTI-6, preferred the corolla.

Polo G40 Or for the people with the smaller wallet the Polo GT I had a GT in 2006 and absolutely loved it. It was such a great fun car I am sure I will go back one day.
