I always strip to bare metal where possible before paint. Primary tools for the job are always DA and wire wheels for the awkward bits. I use small wheels less than 3" diameter, usually in my air drill. The best I have foud are small cup brushes which are very effective.
The Mk1 Civic I have just done had been painted in Celly and I had the same problem with the paint melting and clogging the discs. I managed to do some with the DA locked ad the rest with a 3M Bristle disc. A little slow as they are only 2" diameter but it worked.
I'll only use strip/clean discs around edges and door shuts as I have found they build enough heat to cause distortion on large flat panels.

If you can lock the DA sander so it just spins without "wiggling" you'll smash paint off in no time without clogging disks. I'm told some have a hole that you can put a pin in, but the ones I used didn't so I just whacked a jubilee clip round. interesting. i'll look into that. don't wanna break the works only DA thou mind you, we do have a slightly broken lecy one I could modify..... I did it with a 'lectric one, not sure if the air ones have the same torque? It worked great with the leccy one, I think the speed the thing spins round at just flings all the debris and paint out of the way before it can clog the pad up. Does the outside edges of the pads in and it's a bit tricky to control but you get the hang of it after a bit. If you;ve ever used a floor buffer you'll know what I mean.

Top job mate, little tip when using paint stripper, DON'T paint it on, dab it on then lay a sheet of plastic over the panel this traps the vapours which normally escape and strips much quickly and effectively and by dabbing it on helps the process too good luck

I find that whilst my air DA does have enough torque to work locked, it's air consumption is much higher that way. My compressor is about 18cfm and it manages to keep up but much less and you'd have to keep stopping to wait for the compressor to catch up. I usually use my DA locked for paint stripping but on my Civic, it generated to much heat like that and the paint would just melt and clog the discs. I ended up sanding most of it off with the DA unlocked which was a bit painful. I avoid using stripper if I can help it but will use it as a last resort. Looks to me like you probably don 't have a lot of choice on that.

we had a go at sanding down the rest of the paint, just using 40 grit in the DA to get the thicker bits off then onto 80 grit all over. much easier going now the black's off. result. and my painter is much happier with me  pretty much all off now. just doing the roof, boot and rear quarters first and getting them in primer before moving onto the other panels. I've decided I'm going to do away with some more of the badges on this to show off the shape of the body. also going to do away with some of the trim around the side windows. I'm losing all the badges from the rear quarters, the badge on the C post and also going to do away with the lock on the fuel filler flap. I'm probably going to colour code the door handles too. again to show off the car's shape better. when doing away with the badges I'm left with holes in the metalwork. I've gotta weld these up so i like to use a piece of copper behind the panel. these work really well because they help remove heat from the metal so less distortion and just make it a little easier to weld without blowing holes. these holes at the back are fairly big. prob 6-7mm. so the copper plate was really usefull here. i clamped the copper in place with long reach vice grips. the rest of the holes i did without the copper as they were a bit smaller and i couldn't easily hold the copper in place. anyways. welded, grinded and looking good. this is about 10 hours of work so far. plenty more to go....

Nice work, the copper trick is great isnt it!
I've never got round to getting hold of a proper lump of copper so I always end up having to hold 2p pieces on with a hammer handle, and it's costing me money (Especially since they have been made out of steel since 1992)
It all looks remarkably sound underneath the paint!

23hrs in..... we've got all doors stripped and have also done the front wings. we'll still need to go over them again and treat them with metal restorer to get off any surface rust that will get on the bare metal. got a dent in the lefthand rear door to fix and a couple on the front edges of the front wings. oh and and the rear quaters where the badge holes have been welded up will need a skim too. got a little bit of welding to do on the front wheel arches, thankfully thats the only bit i've gotta do. let me show you my door bottoms

Looking good Al I know the paint job was ropey but, dunno why the paint is being so stubborn...it's just regular car paint sprayed on!

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

been on it again today. had the bonnet to strip so tried out putting a sheet over the paint stripper as this is surposed to work better as it keeps the fumes in. still had to give it a couple of goes but it does seam to work slightly better also removed the chrome trim from around the door windows and striped the paint off there. that was time consuming but gotta be done. also done some rust treatment, including a small hole i found in the A post next to the windscreen. no real dramas. 29 hours in..... hopefully get it all in primer next week. but there's still the filler work to do......

Nice one! I reckon i am gonna bare metal my Maser, the paint thats on is pretty thick, i think the thickness of it is 'visible' round swage lines and so on. This is gonna be such a looker when youre done.
