thinking about selling this and getting a 2a landy as i really could do with a pick up. i'm not sure what i could sell it for. hoping i'd get £3000+ maybe 3500? it's a 1972, tax exempt fitted with a ld28 nissan straight six diesel. 4 speed box with overdrive. power steering. all works well, very good on fuel for it's size, nearly 30 mpg in normal daily use. original chassis in excellent condition, body very good having had new sills and and front inner wings, the rest is solid too. paintwork is good, panels are fairly straight. 2" lift on uprated springs, 7x16 steels and all terrain tyres. drives nicely on road. rear sliding windows and door quater light glass are all fixed shut and sealed up. interior is not standard, has later type dash and very comfy jaguar seats. rest is just scruffy and used. no radio fitted. no rear carpet, no rear interior panels. but does have rear seat. tow bar fitted but electrics not conected. interested to hear informed opinions. taa

God, that's lovely. I had an '82 RRC with an RD28T in it, EPIC engines. Alas the BD Fun Fund won't stretch that far, stick it on some of the specialist LR forums, I hope it finds a good home.

£3k seems a bit steep to me to be honest although I'de be happy to be corrected. I was thinking i'de be lucky to get £1200 for my 2 door and its rock solid, with a nice standard interior new headlining, gearbox etc, although its not tax exempt

A tax exempt Range Rover will always make good money, the difficulty with this one is the diesel conversion: The main problem is any parts that were used for the conversion, may now be difficult to come by and may even have to be fabricated. If everything used for this conversion is standard off the shelf parts, that will help enormously, but you will need to research how your particular conversion is done and supply all this information to any prospective buyer as it will ease concerns.
If this vehicle was fitted with its original 3.5 V8 and had the original spec, it would probably sell for £5000-£6000, possibly more if it was in really good condition. The fact that it has numerous later and non original parts fitted, along with the faults as you describe, would probably see it make about £1500-£2000, maybe a little more to the right buyer. That should see enough for you to be able to find a fairly decent 2A truck cab (or by a standard 88 2A and fit a truck cab yourself)
If you were willing to spend a little to return more to the original spec, it would probably fetch more.
Hope that's of some use.
Ian

thanks for the replys.
i have been thinking about swaping the engine out (i would like to keep thie engine) and either fitting a stock v8 or a 200tdi lump. if i was to sell it.
if i can't get over £3000 i doubt i'd sell it. i'd never get something as good, comfy, usefull, cheap to own and run for the money.
any ideas what sort a money i'd get with the other engines in?

I've got no idea now, was just pondering dropping a RV8 back into mine, if they are making that type of money!

I've got no idea now, was just pondering dropping a RV8 back into mine, if they are making that type of money! tax exempt. that'll be the difference. and mines on the correct chassis so no iva issues. unlike some hybrid coil sprung landies out there.....

Returning the vehicle to stock specification would increase its value no end. I would say it is likely to fetch more with a Land Rover TDI in it then a non Land rover engine, due to the before mentioned problem of custom conversion parts. With a TDI, everything used could be stock, making servicing so much easier and cheaper! But you would have to bear in mind the potential cost of an engine swap.
(On a personal note, this with a tdi in it, would be one of my dream vehicles!!!)
There are not many tax exempt Range Rovers about. To give you some idea, try searching some classic car websites and see if you can find one. There was one for sale at a London dealership, which had been subject of a total restoration (I know the person who did this) and it was offered for sale at £30,000. It was not available for long.
Cheers,
Ian

^ It's a tax exempt Rangie with MOT... J engine or no, it's worth a good chunk more than £1500.
I really like the 2-doors, they look much cleaner than the later ones, particuarly with early bumpers and whatnot. The mods make this less desireable but I still reckon it's worth £3k if it's as good as you say it is structurally. Possibly a bit more with a vaguely correct 3.5V8 in. They do seem to be making good money these days.
I like the colour!

That ones looks to need a lot more work then yours to get it nice and clean, let alone near to yours in terms of originality. I feel a little sorry for that Rangie.... I'm glad you've decided to keep yours, Landy's need good homes Ian
