526 AYD is on the National Numbers website for £1525, but like a lot of them it could have been there a long time. As I understand it any non age related plate (i.e. can go on any vehicle) is probably worth about £800-1000, with anything vaguely desirable fetching more. I'm not sure where yours stands with a Y in the middle of it but I think it's a nice number. For a quick private sale I reckon it would be cheap at £600-700.

IIRC, 998 is the specific CC of a couple of 1 litre cars (Mini, for example), and Ayd is a phonetic contraction for a few names like Adrian or Aidan.
So probably £1K to the right person.

It is only worth what someone will offer for it, Newreg valued my plate at £1500, in reality I had some curse word ask me if I'd lower my asking price of £50 plus the fees, in the end I binned it along with the car it was on.

Also DVLA issued plates (A20 XXX etc) and cheap Northern Irish cover plates have devalued plates like your's sorry. Plate dealers are 99.9% a waste of space as they can advertise your plates for years and never get a sniff. I'd stick it on an online auction website with a reserve of about £550 to be honest. A lot of private plates aren't worth the transfer fee now, they're best left on the vehicles to make them slightly more attractive to any potential vehicle purchasers.

I actually had some moderate success with with a cheap number plate. My 1991 BX had J** HMR on it and Motor Marks of Leicester did manage to sell that recently and returned £325 (quite surprised as something with HMR via the dvla was only a couple of hundred). They did have it for a year but the proceeds will pay for a years tax, a couple of tyres and the MOT next time around! Like the other posts mentioned prices are quite often optimistic and a lot of the numbers will have been advertised for a long time.

Yeah, I mean in that way it does work, if it is off of a car you are running then it doesn't matter either way, if it is like mine and attached to a ropey old knacker, it isn't worth keeping it on the road while you hope someone buys it!

It would be good to find a chap called Adrian with a 998 imp!

998 was the year Ethelred 11 celebrated his 20th birthday, and AYD could stand for Against Yowling Danes as he fought them.
I therefore deduce you have a number plate of significant historical importance and you should claim treasure trove immediately, perhaps applying to have it grade three listed.

£350 maybe? To be honest I'd leave it on the Hillman, it would be a shame to rob its registration after all these years.

Completely agree with this now, looking back, it was a bad idea... i also considered selling the car...
but I couldn't it stays, but get it out and MOT it in a shabby condition, but roadworthy, then tinker.

The car would need to moted before you could transfer the plate anyway.

Neighbour recently bought a plate off eBay with his initials that included the transfer fee He paid LESS than the fee meaning the seller was out of pocket. Moral of story is starting at 99p isn't always the best option ! I'd had lots of plates valued at silly amounts but "at the end of the day" it's what someone is willing to pay. By all means try and sell seperate from the car but experience has shown me that registration dealers just act as agents. They might value at £1000 then contact you saying they have a customer interested and offering £100 ! Best putting on eBay for the lowest you'd accept and keep your fingers crossed it fetches more but also be realistic that your start price might be the max it'll fetch - or nobody is interested at that price. Its original... its registered in the county, and ownership has stayed in the county... therefore would be stupid to ruin that....
