This annoys me. They have pointlessly destroyed hundreds of classics over the years, a lot of which people can only dream of owning. Then when one of them decides they fall in love with one, it's cherished, imported and looked after. What about the Lancia they destroyed in the same Botswana special? Or the Rolls-Royce they killed at christmas just gone..? I'd love to buy Hammond's Kadett that he loves so much, crush it & cube it, then deliver it back to him. Maybe then he might realise the value of the rest of these cars to the world. what you meen lioke every other car owner on the planet take a look at the strange oditys we own and restore on here while thousands of "better" cars pass us by. So you want to scrap a car just to make a point pot kettle and black there me thinks, I bet you hate banger racing but would scrap a car full of decent spares to "save" it from being raced as well then ?? Go oliver! get prettyed up then drive past the above posters house every 10 mins for a week ;D

Topgear and banger racing in the same thread! DANGER DANGER DANGER That made me think, you know you have "stranger danger" when its strange people around kids, for us car folks there`s the "banger danger" when people muck about with our cars ;D I like Top Gear, also like Oliver, in fact, i have a Kadett A in my barn, only in all white

Great to hear - Haters be damned!!!!
It's one more classic saved. Sure they destroy a few but I have in my time in the quest for parts or the need to race or just because I didn't have the space or money.
I am in no way religious but the quote about without sin and casting stones applies here.
TBH the bits where they actually use these cars on road trips is the most interesting - Them talking in the studio is painful.

I think it's a good thing that it's getting a full resto to make it factory fresh. It's trendy to drive it about with rust patches and dents etc but I think it deserves to mint after it's past life.

I don t think I ever manged to resell any of My first five cars (all mk 1 or mk 2 fiestas), all dead because of something stupid I did (poor maintance or meeting with roadside furnature when I ran out of "skill) But driving them gave me a love of old cars and taught me that if I did nt want to walk to work I would have to fix it. This has given me a love of the em "Retro ride" ( not festers the engine seem to blow up)and have a number of them, I did nt save em there things I like that I own and would sell them to anyone to be scraped or even driven by Clarckson If i needed the cash.
About cubing Oliver please don't give the Top Gear producion company any ideas

Any classic that gets saved/restored and achieves publicity can only do good for our 'hobby' imho, regardless of who or what has done it
It's another good looking classic, saved, cherished and shown to the world.
How can that be a bad thing???

only top gear car ive actually seen is the toyota 4x4 that went to the north pole and I think they built a few of them but know where one is parked in prestine condition but the security to get to the compound is tight so you couldnt get pictures unless it goes out to car shows it was in a compound on an army camp in hampshire cant give location. the arctic toyota hi-lux? Ive seen that one (or at least one of them if what you say about them making a few is true) up close. And I mean close. I was literally sat underneath it at a local show ;D It really is big.

Can I make a point here that I wouldn't actually cube the Kadett! Just was a point I was making that they scrap an awful lot of classic cars, and trying to signify that when they "Like" a car then it's saved. But when they don't it's destroyed. That point is not "weird" at all. Maybe I shouldn't have said it in that way. But there you go.
And yes every other motorist scraps cars every day. But Top Gear do it with licence payers money. It's unnecessary.
I don't go around scrapping cars! Why make assumptions like that?? If you read what I put you can see the point I was trying to make.
And "pot calling the kettle black" is more like talking about scrapping a car with "decent spares" but then sticking up for a tv programme that destroys cars and their parts complete. Check the state of the Mercedes and Lancia that were in the same special as that Kadett.. They ripped off parts from the Merc and the Lancia and BURNT them on a bonfire.
Go on car fans. Stick up for them.
Note: I actually quite like the Kadett, nice little car, and I would have saved it too.

Actually, come to think of it, cubing the Kadett was a wrong thing to say. How about buying it from Hammond, and Clarksons Roller, and while we are at it, May's 911 and then driving them to destruction across the desert? Ripping parts off and burning them while we go.
As long as it's recorded and played on BBC2 it'll be ok yeah?

And yes every other motorist scraps cars every day. But Top Gear do it with licence payers money. It's unnecessary. Actually, if I remember rightly, Top Gear is a massive money earner for the bbc and more than pays for itself. Really fed up of this holier-than-thou attitude that comes out every time a TG thread appears. If you don't like it, don't watch it and don't open the threads, then you won't have to get worked up and emotional about it. Back on track, glad the old boy is getting looked after ;D

Nothing they have destroyed has been irreplaceable. Most of the cars seem to be Marinas. Destroying a marina is like killing a KKK member. There'll be a few vocal weirdos that will send you death threats and hate you forever, but the majority of the population will be happier

well i cant condone the destruction of any of the vehicles in the show... but they buy them, they own them, so they are free to do what they want with them... the same could be said of anyone modifying cars!
The show is good entertainment, but the days of it being about the vehicles is sadly long gone... but good viewing none the less! As for the presenters they are all petrol heads, and they all own many cars, and spend many thousands of pounds restoring and maintaining their cars... Well done Hamster on saving 'Oliver' i am sure both May and Clarkson have saved others but perhaps less publicised.
Thanks OP for the link its a great read...

^ The link above was for the initial mini resto, in preparation for tv work. I assume the full blown resto now happening is an entirely different affair?

Would rather see a car destroyed that will live on in our memories (and many reruns on Dave), rather than see the many similar cars that just rot on drives and in gardens then eventually get scrapped. After all, its the same with the cars that died in films, which often are much rarer and much more desirable. The end result is this = the car is famous forever now, and will be brought back to life every time we watch that show/film again
