New scary project, or as my wife says another heap, and why don't you finish one before you buy another, ;D apparently, because I can is not the right answer! Its a pretty solid car, needs a little tickle in places with the sparkler, but not much, interior is scrap though, and although the engine runs pretty well, the gears work and you can actualy drive it, the alloy timing chain cum waterpump housing is corroded to the point that there is no connection to the radiator, so without replacement the engine is scrap. more pictures of some of my other projects to follow

I also have this Vauxhall Viva its a 1.8 automatic, though it will be a manual, with a modern engine when I am finished, it currently is just a shell, as I am replacing all the suspension bushes!

Avenger looks pretty solid, nice catch. If you can't find a timing cover, you could always do an engine transplant. Pug Mi16 mates very nicely to a 1.9 LDV diesel gearbox, which is also pug

Pug Mi16 mates very nicely to a 1.9 LDV diesel gearbox, which is also pug Its pretty good, but will need some work on the metal, I don't know where to start looking for a timing cover, other than wait till one turns up on the bay, I did look into avenger forums , but the ASOC one seems to think that you should be a paid up member before you get to look at the forum, and they want £24 up front for something that may not be my cup of tea, or of any use to me, and it was like being hit with a wet kipper, when I got a rejection email and then an email saying I needed to pay £24, I may just twink it, not origonal, but fairly easy, though it would be more work than fixing the origonal, if a cover could be found!

I can ask on ASOC for you if you want. I've been thinking about the Mi16 conversion for ages, I'll get round to it one day. Hillman fitted one with a 3ltr Essex V6 back in the day, was so scarily fast that they shelved the project. And yes, I've also considdered doing it as a period mod ;D

And yes, I've also considdered doing it as a period mod ;D I will have to check out the engine to see what exactly needs replaced, even though parts seem very cheap, it may be that I would be better off investing in a new motor, it needs hoses and possibly Alternator, leads and cap and a good service at the minimum, but if anyone has a timing cover, that might sway the decision one way or the other! V6 ford in an avenger, probably would be well scary, shame they never carried it on into production!

if you make the viva manual would be interested in the auto shifter & pedal,
|
|
theres more to life than mpg & to much power is just enough.

More pictures, excuse the crappy iphone pictures this is where the timing cover has corroded! and the alternator looks baad theres some grot around the rear arches, but looks in the main surface rust this is probably the worst bit, you can't see it from the pictures, but theres a few holes electronic ignition as standard, and still got the jack and wheel brace fixed to the bulkhead, note how good the strut tops are! and the final one

Crumbs I had no idea about that timing cover, thats pretty bad! I have never tried to drive it more than 20 yards so had not spent too much time worrying about the cooling system. I reckon the cheapest cure for that will be to hold on till a manky avenger engine comes up on ebay thats been under someones workbench for 20 years, and buy the whole thing for £25 or something.

I only found out as I left it running, whilst sorting out the delivery guy, and when i returned the temperiture was mid way between the middle high, at first i thought it was the water pump corroded, engine runs fantasticly once warm, a little tappety, but just needing a good service, I have to say all the work you have done has been to a very high standard, I hope that I can continue that! Do you remember who you sourced the autumn gold paint from, going to need a bit of that!

Theres a service kit for the master cylinder in the boot if you want to overhaul the one you've got!
