Six Hours at the Goodwood Revival - Added Action

At the last minute I was offered a ticket for the Friday at the Goodwood Revival. Now that was an opportunity I really didn't want to turn down even though I knew I'd have to leave the place by 3pm at the latest so a 5:30am alarm was set and having picked up the ticket bearer from West London we were down there at about 9. So I had six hours to try and see as much as I could....

This seems like a good place to start

There was a heavy Cobra presence for the anniversary all-Cobra race.





No need to wonder whether they were replicas or not (though some are likely 'continuations')

When warming up this Metropolitan made the most incredible sound form its B series lump.









This is one of my favourite shots.









Big Dan Gurney celebrations too.





A miniature paddock had been built for the J40 racers.







I was trying to get this shot when people kept getting in the way.



Then I realised who one of the people was.

All the cars you can see in this picture are 250GTOs. 12 I think. There were a couple more out of shot.

I've managed to fit in three practice/qualifying sessions too, the saloons, the Cobras and the big banger V8 sports cars but I have yet to sort those out.

Thanks for the comments. Its taken me a couple of days to sort out the action shots....

I was going to post up the Gurney parade and saloon car session first but the photos seemed to have stopped working. Have some Cobras for the moment instead, practice and qualifying for the special 'Shelby Cup'. You'll have to try and imagine the thunder of all these small block Ford V8s getting a proper work out.





Eek! Driver managed to hold this together.











Towards the end of the session the track was mostly dry and Kenny Brack rolled round quite slowly in the Daytona coupe for a couple of laps, probably to make some room as he then came bast on a couple of absolute flyers.



They didn't all make it through the tricky conditions unscathed.

After the Cobras came more full throttle V8 noise courtesy of the '60s Sports Prototypes for which we moved further up the straight.



















In between each session it looked like some lucky people were gettng chauffered round the track, one of the cars being 'Bozwell's' GT40.



There was also a race for Land Rovers.



Not really. I made that up.

The last track action I was to see was perhaps the most significant. Now, obviously I am no great fan of why these cars came to exist but they do and they certainly pushed the envelope of racing car construction at the time. This years Revival was (so it was said) to be the first time since the war that such a quantity of the 1930's German 'Silver Arrows' had been driven together on a racing circuit. Joining them were to be a selection of cars that had originally been up against their unassailable might. This was a mixture of a display/race so rather than a straightforward procession, the cars were driven at some speed and there was some carefully orchestrated overtaking, none of the owners particularly wanting to damage any of the cars.

how soon do tickets go on sale for 13? was talking cars with an irish friend in waterford over the weekend and he said he'd go next year to the revival (ive been to the fos before and wanna do the september meet also)

people were asking 200 quid for saturday tickets last week lol

Hairnet, I'm not surprised tickets were selling above face value as they'd totally sold out the weekend. Going on this year's experience I think we're going to try for the Revival as a family next year and perhaps the Silverstone Classic and take a break from the FoS.

Do it. Next year. Because if you don't you might regret it. Oddly, as I don't often think this way, I missed my dad while I was at this event. I think he'd really have enjoyed the atmosphere and seeing some of the cars he watched back when they were current.

Only a slow speed parade but it was drizzling and slippery...



A nice 'Ford' trio.







Next up was the practice/qualifying for the St Mary's Trophy saloons.











The sun came out and started drying the track right at the end of the session.

Fantastic photos

I've been going for the last 12 years - it gets better and better.

Unfortunately on Sunday morning on arrival my 18-55mm lens stopped working so all my shots are with a 75-300mm.

Great pics! Was there for the full three days this year and to say my feet and legs were ruined by the end of it all is an understatement... Managed to capture the Maserati Tipo 151 take a trip into the tyre wall on Sunday, was gutted for the driver but even more gutted when researching the car that it was bought for ~£1.2m in 2006 and not long had a full resto!

One of the best parts for me (as always) was the car park, love just mooching around admiring all the different varieties that turn up.


Oh, and here's the aftermath of the Maserati.
