Wasn't sure what to make of this - at the start of the prog (and during) the car was wearing reg plates indicating that it had been used on the road. The owner was said to be having difficulty getting the car through the IVA.
So, questions. . .
Does this mean that he was pulled up by VOSA 7 years after the car was built (the guy had owned the car for 10 years and took 3 years to build it) and had the original V5 withdrawn?
Why were the required emissions so low - shouldn't the car have been tested for emissions based on the age of the engine?
The car was 'built from used Jaguar donor parts' so why was it wearing a '12' plate at the end of the show and not a 'Q' plate?
Confused.

Confused too! Maybe he had those original plates on for show purposes? It got a 12 plate as it's an out the box kit rather than a completely fresh build maybe?

yeah, i forgot it was on as well, only found it on +1 when it was 15 mins in the whole episode seemed to be one of those where there doing stuff for the sakes of it rather than cos it needs its (the axel narrowing for one) the thing with the emissions confused me as well, i understand rejetting sorted alot of it, but i thought you really needed fuel injection with lamba senors in order to run cats?

A mate got a tug and had the reg for his buggy withdrawn.
It'd been on the road since the 70's but was still registered as a beetle.

I thought you really needed fuel injection with lamba senors in order to run cats? That's right, you can't just bung a cat on an engine fed by a normal carb expect it to last more than a few thousand miles. They'll 100% deffo be knackered by it's first MOT. Ladas in the mid-90s used fancy computer controlled carbs to try and get a bit more life out of the cat, but they weren't very successful at all. The exhaust guy had their pants down with those fancy turbine muffler things too - "they suck the gases out" Car looked and sounded ace, but I'm glad it wasn't my money being wizzed up the wall on the exhaust only to have to replace the cats for every MOT. IIRC they could just provide some documentation to prove the engine was built before 1992 and have the easy emissions test that doesn't require a Cat. It was this way for the SVA, not sure about with IVA

AFAIK, the DVLA tries to avoid issuing Q plates where possible, but I cannot understand why the cobra gained a 12 registration. Also, the "garage" seemed a lot more studio based this series than ever before. The whole programme seemed a bit false to me. I'll still watch the rest of the series though!

A '12 plate would be issued if the vehicle was made from mostly new components...

I don´t know nothing of the english laws, but please do not forget: it´s a tv show, don´t take it serious! It all doesn´t have to make sense, it´s just necessary that you watch it and hopefully stay on the tv during commercial break! The programme between those breaks are irrelevant and far too often filled with scripted reality - written by people with little to zero knowledge of the real life!

I wondered about that too, but it seems you can run a car with a cat and carbs, its just not ideal. The very first cat equipped cars in the 70's were all running a carb - it was the loss of lead in petrol at that time that allowed their use. If its passed an IVA then it can go three years before it needs a MOT - handy.

I think sometimes you have to take it with a pinch of salt. Remember the 205 GTi with the smoky engine that was "fixed" with a new gear linkage. Last night's "Built it ten years ago, and did a proper job of it, but couldn't get it road legal" patter was a bit fishy. I'm pretty sure the "seller" has cropped up in a previous episode too.
The whole cats with carbs thing was also slightly suspect and forking out a fortune to put slightly deeper dish rear wheels on on a car you intend making a profit on was just daft.
Sometimes it's great (Morgan re-chassis for instance) other times it's just a bit daft (Suzuki SJ410, fortune spent on a terminally rotten car). It's still a lot better than anything involving celebrities dancing, shagging, cooking etc though.

What he said above.
At the end of the day it is just entertainment, yea its sketchy in places - it ain't overhaulin'/american hotrod etc but its probably the best car related programme on t.v at the min, and a blessing if your me who is out numbered by women in the house - forced to spend the rest of the week watching monotonus soaps and reality tv hell!
They do do some nice motors and at least they're enthusiastic about what they do, you get the impression that they do actually like the cars they're working on, and the result was spot on!
And you know you will stay tuned next week too ;D

ALL IS NOW REVEALEDRight - here is the ad for the car after Wheeler Dealers had finished with it:- www.pistonheads.com/sales/4210405.htmSo, they forgot to mention that they fitted it with a new crate engine (forgot to mention the cost as well . . .) - hence the need for the stringent emissions test. Presumeably the new engine and various other new parts were enough to warrant a '12' plate rather than a 'Q' - the Jaguar suspension being the one donor item allowed.

I doubt they fitted that and didn't mention it in the show, must have had the swap before they got their mitts on it.

All that money, but its still "looks" like a kit. Dash at a strange angle, all the tat (no doubt neccesary for the IVA) hanging on the rear chrome.
It can be a stunning car (i plan on one myself, self built, one day) but the devil really is in the detail with them. I'd love to own it, as its so close to being perfect, but i'd be wanting it -perfect- for 28k.
Plus all that wedge spent on a "new crate motor", no one think to make it a ford lump* in the process so it has a bit more originality to a real cobra? I mean, if your buying it anyway. And buying new.
Meh, this may sound like a rant at was first meant to be my musings on a cobra rep. Apologies, but its not meant to be overly critical. Just an observation. I do like it!
*not a knock on Chevy mice, i own one.
