cant insure modern cars ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) and theres been some great suggestions As for reduced mpg I was obtaining 28 instead of 32 mpg on the nova with fuel and air mods. The corsa was 55mpg till I upped fuel, air and boost it dropped to 45mpg but was well worth it. You say you can't insure modern cars but surely you pay more premiums on your modified retro's like the Nova and Corsa anyway ? You do declare the mods ? Paul H corsa was g/f, The the retros work out around £150 ish each mods declared. The orion has tow bar and alloys declared both made no difference to policey price as did declaring none fault claim

I wouldn't completely dismiss a Rover. Firstly the head gasket issue is much overstated - there's a few quick mods that can more or less eliminate the risk of HGF.
Also around the early 90s IMO there's little faster than a Rover 200 in a 1.4. The only problem is the 400 tourer didn't come as a 1.4, in fact I'm about 80% sure it was only a 2.0l.

Christ is this still going?
While you're at it can you guys find me a nice tax free retro that is practical, easy to find parts for, will lap the nurburgring in less than 7 minutes, tow a caravan, cost less than £635 and get over 50 to the gallon?
Needs to be a 5 star euro ncap jobby with power steering btw
Can the OP not just buy 6 different cars?

I kind of agree with what a few others are saying. You're wanting the complete package when it just doesn't exist, and you need decent fuel consumption but are happy to take a fairly big hit on fuel consumption tuning diesel corsas of all things. Doesn't make sense to me.
I need a big hatch/estate for family duties that can also comfortably do long journeys, not blow up with short journeys (like a modern TD), is in the lower tax bracket, costs under £1k to buy and will return 40+mpg. Unfortunately that plain doesn't exist so some quick calculations settled me on a car I was given being the best option which is cheapish to insure, extremely reliable for all journeys, comfortable on long journeys and suitably big, it's got a nice turn of pace but poor economy and I pay £220 a year tax. I had to make a compromise somewhere though.
Trouble is if I bought a similarly sized car with a sub 1.6 petrol engine (if I could find one) it would be so underpowered I doubt the fuel consumption would be any better and it would be woefully slow. The £80 a year tax saving wouldn't be worth getting annoyed at how horrifically slow it would be.
Budgeting can be difficult but is just part of life and seems to be getting more and more needed, you can't hide from it forever. How about small, fun, economical retro for yourself and a bigger more expensive to run car for your OH that you can use to tow/haul/cruise in whenever you need it? That's more or less what the OH and I do and it kind of works.
Going by your criteria I'd also take a small hit on fuel consumption and tax and get a Saab 9000/Volvo Estate. Good turn of pace, and if a 100bhp 1.5 floats your boat this will seem like a rocket, easily tuneable if you feel the need, all the space you could need, great towing abilities and you can buy them for £500 or less. Insurance is often surprisingly good (as in my case with a 9000) as you don't get too many boy racers with a Saab/Volvo.
Just my 2p.

Insurance is often surprisingly good (as in my case with a 9000) as you don't get too many boy racers with a Saab/Volvo. Just my 2p. I think this has gone slightly off topic. I'm selling GF Astra to buy a Mondeo TDCI. Cars are equal value and mpg the same. insurance is around £100 more and tax about £60 more. So I need to stump up £160p/a + fuel costs for when I tow my caravan for the reduced mpg. This cannot be predicted. So I'm think £300 over all. The avenger costs me £410 to run so when thats sold Ill have £110 more but this will tax and insure my scooter p/a I then have cash from avenger and cash from sale of Orion to purchase a second car. which needs to do what Ive asked for. Which is replace the orion with a faster estate car Now apart from availability 2 cars have been sourced that meet my needs as in a pre 91 registration, 26mpg round town min, low tax braket, 5dr estate. A few others have been thrown in but do not meet my requirement. If Vauxhall novas came in an Estate that would be cool, If Ford Escort estate's where quicker that would be cool, If Truimp Acclaims come in estates that would be cool ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) When you have a diesel that does twice the mpg its easy to loose a few mpg and still balance the books ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

your Talking BS ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) Eh? You've just quoted my post in the last reply in which you actually cleared up what you are looking for, because your original post is really unclear and seems like you want the world for nothing. You put across your point of view and needs sensibly and then go to say I'm talking BS. I'm not talking BS, and if you only want opinions you agree with and all others are going to be branded BS, don't ask the question on a public forum ffs. sorry fella ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png) wasnt ment for you redone it ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Yep, sorry, just seen that so deleted my comment too ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) I do understand your needs a bit clearer now, although from all I've searched finding a cheap to run, economical and not glacially slow large 5 door/estate is impossible, but you seem to be selecting smaller cars than I was thinking of anyway.

civic shuttle 1.4 GL would get my vote. they've got about 90bhp if my memory is correct, do 40 MPGish and go well ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) The first response was the most the most productive its a suggestion that meets all needs ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) all other surgestions where considered but only one met the needs better than expected except we don't know what it cost. people that tail of talking curse word should learn some manners.

Yeah doesnt need to be big just big enough for a sub amp and 6)9's in boot with room for weeks shopping and able to tow 500kg. Hatch backs are basicaully out as the boots are not big enough and saloons you cant get the tunes going

One of my best ever cars was my recently deceased E34 BMW 525 TDS Tourer. One £75 remapping chip later and it out-paced the petrol version. Lots of cool old car for the money. 30-40mpg. Very well screwed together. Just check the sills very carefully as thanks to the age old 'sunroof drain tubes exiting into the sill cavities' problem they rot from the inside out. Check the jacking ints and thear ends of the sills with a good hard prod! If you find a non-sunroof car you should be ok.
I wouldn't hesitate in recommending one, just make sure it is the TDS and not the earlier non-intercooled TD model and get it chipped!

As with something like this I could avoid getting the crappy mondeo tdci and use this for the caravan and keep the astra

If you're only worried about boot space for music, rather than back seat room, then a mk2 Scirocco may well be worth a look. The sloping roof line means the back seats are further forward than the average hatch, so the boots massive, as is the parcel shelf, the rear screens angle reflects sound well too. 1.5's exist, and are plenty tunable, but they're seriously rare. Alternatively, any 1.8 carb would be a straight swap for a 1.5 from a mk1 Golf/Jetta though, which are easy enough to get hold of, and literally a bolt in swap. My 1.8 carb'd Scala returned 38mpg average, and they're pretty tunable.
As for an estate, I'll back up the 1.6td Passat's being damn good cars, and genuinely returning 50+mpg with normal driving. Even thrashed to hell it'll manage 47, and sat on a long motorway drive at 70 it'd do 56. They're quicker than you'd expect, but wont set the world on fire.
I'll also back up that a Rover 200/400 isn't anywhere near as bad as people make out, and really are impressive for a 1.4, really good cars all around, keep the coolant system in good nick (or do 1 or 2 dirt cheap mods) and it'll be a very reliable car.
