Chaps I'm after a new daily hack and the 406's are cheap as chips and have a decent review. I'm after a diesel and notice they have 4 variants! A 1.9, 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2?! Does anyone have any advice with what's most Eco and reliable? ( would prefer a bit of poke ) Cheers!

Be wary of the HDi models. Whilst they drive better, give better performance and more refinement they use a high pressure common rail diesel system which is extremely expensive to fix when it goes wrong. Much of it is not a DIY proposition. They are prone to the 'in tank' fuel pump disintegrating which then contaminates the rest of the HP fuel system, often writing the car off on repair cost.

The 1.9 is an XUD; reliable as clockwork, good for starship mileages, and will be the only thing to survive a nuclear holocaust except cockroaches. The 2.1 is the unit that was in the XM, I believe, and is also very reliable and more DIYable than an HDi, but bulky and, at least in the XM, so crammed in the engine bay as to make it hard to work on (it's virtually, though not quite, impossible to change the head gasket without dropping the engine out)

I think the one I had was a 2.1 , no bother at all and fairly swift once you excited the blowy thingy under the bonnet.

I had a 306 Dturbo with the 1.9 XUD. I'd definately have another - very reliable and you can maintain it yourself too.

I had a 1.9 xud 50mpg round town and same engine gbox at 200k , also had the 2.1 exec definitely the one to go for. If serviced properly go on for ages coolant changes require the coolant to be sucked out to do it properly be very wary of the HDI though

XUDs can be tuned at home and are purely mechanical, so as said if they do go wrong they're usually an easy fix. I've had a few and find them quite characterful for a diesel

On checking it seems only the 2.0 and 2.2 are available of the face lift models which is what I'd like?
If I was to go for either of these what should I be looking for and to keep on top of to lower risk of break down?
Cheers

406 2.0 HDi, so the wrong one then. But the engines done 195,000, still quite nippy and good on fuel. Door locks have packed up, handbrake not really working. Very comfy and £450 for (so far!) 6 months driving.
Should also mention, I do about 400 miles a week!

Unless it has a history of extensive component replacement on the fuel system that one is probably living on borrowed time!!

XUD engine, all day long. Capable of 300,000 miles with care. They don't like neglect of the cooling system though. And one of the glow plugs is a bit tricky to get at if it's got a Bosch pump, so people only tend to change 3, resulting in rough running when cold.

Does anyone know if either the 1.9 or 2.1 engines were ever fitted to the facelift model?
