19. So the tractor has been looking like this for the past 6? months so I decided it was time to get a move on and paint it while the hot summer weather was here (for once). 20. So I went out and bought this. Of course its not much use to me right now as there are plenty of parts to get ready first. 21. Remember the radiator cowl? Well once I had the rust cut out of it this is all I was left with,Not much. Luckily I had read some of TonyBMW's posts the night before so armed with a hammer I got to work. 22. Now the welder I was using was not the best one for the job (A SIP industrial 200 amp ARC welder) so it was hard to weld rusty tin without blowing through. But after a couple of hours work I had this. 23. Finished the welding and a with a skim of filler It was ready for paint. 24. Part of the throttle linkage. There was a ball and socket type joint in this that was slightly loose. I started tapping the socket with a hammer lightly to make it a snugger fit which resulted it the socket breaking into pieces. What do I do now? Well about 5 years ago there was a distributor kit bought for our Model T pickup seeing as the old distributor was curse word. The distrubor kit is designed for a LHD car but the pickup was RHD so there was parts left over, Namely a bar with 2 ball and socket joints on it. A spin on the quad to go get it,Abit of angry-grindying and some welding left with with this. Nearly better than new. 25. Giving parts a go over with red oxide before the 2 PAC primer. Front axle has been gone over with the wire brush to get rid of the rust and old paint. New bolts holding the axle together and new bolts for the wishbones. Hoping to get give it a coat of primer in the next 2 or 3 days and then top coat in about a weeks time.

That tractor building contest is amazing! I've once seen an engine building competition on stage at a car show, using Ford V4 engines of all things. They started with the bare block and all parts laid out, and got the engines running very quickly!

26. Old stabilizer pins cut off,Nut was rusted on solid. New one sitting waiting to go on. 27. Tractor after being given a scuff down ready for a coat of primer. 28. Parts hung up waiting for paint. Takes a brave while to hang them all up (Suprisingly). 29. Recent ebay purchase Devilbiss FLG5 spray gun waiting to drink down this tin of paint. 30. PAINTED! After a good 4 or 5 hour non stop marathon. Wrong nozzle on the gun for primer, Really restricts paint flow. 31. All the small parts painted. Plan is to let it harden for a week, Give the primer a light sand with 400 where needed, Spray topcoat then reassemble. Still need to paint the bonnet,2 back mudguards, toolbox, back wheels and front wheels but I think I'll leave them awhile as they are all easy to take off bits.

So a visit to the Stradbally Steam Rally, Co. Laois resulted in my buying 2 weld on ends for €22 and a voltage regulator for €30. The price of all these bits soon adds up. The tractor still has not been given topcoat because of the shi*e weather we have been having. In the mean time I have been working on alot of the other small parts which need work,Of which there are many. 32. The knackered ends on the lift arms that came on the tractor. One of them was so worn a ball had fallen off a long time before I got my hands on the tractor. Time to replace all 4 I think... 33. Modifying some ''universal'' weld on ends to fit the tractor. A bit lot of cutting and grinding and they are ready to fit. Universal, ehh? 34. Done. With the same welder I welded the fan shroud with too. 35. The ammount of sh*ote thats been cut off so far. (More comprehensive photo to come once restoration has been completed. 36. Now here is a bit of a problem. These are the 2 TVO heat sheild studs. Now just to clarify the TVO heat shield is the alloy part between the exhaust and the engine. As you can see the 2 studs are in tough shape. One I sheared off and the other has had a interesting repair done to it in the past. Someone has cut a slot in it with a angle grinder and pressed a nut into the slot. It worked but it looked completely wrong. 37. So I got 4 17MM (Metric) nuts and welded them together. 38. Then cut the old ends/nuts off the studs, Welded the new nuts on, Found 2 new bolts and washers and I'm done! Works perfect. 39. Now when I got the tractor is was missing the air filter gauze. The air filet inlet is located in of all places, The right hand side of the dash board. You can buy a brand new gauze for a pricey 15 euro. I borrowed a junt of mesh from the metalwork rooms in school for another project and then it got left lying about. I figured it would do this job perfect. Take the old gauze cover, Mark around it with a black marker onto the mesh and then get the angle grinder. 40. And it will leave you with something like this. It nearly looks factory. Even better is that the mesh is zinc plated versus the 15 euro reproduction which is not. 41. The fitting instructions. 42. Drilling holes in the lift arms for the lynch pin brackets. Zinc plated aswell. Thats all for now. Still plenty of bits to do and parts to buy. Just waiting for that blast of hot weather..

Well, We had one day of hot weather on Monday 19th so I took advantage of it and the tractor is now painted. 3 coats of paint on everything,Nice and shiny. 43. The main body of the tractor after 3 coats of paint. 44. Front axle showing a decent enough shine. 45. And the seat showing an even better shine! I'll let that harden now for 5 days to a week and then I'll start putting her back together! Its been a long time coming.

46. And before I even had the chance to pick up the camera I had the front axle, water pump, seat and the L/H side of the engine bolted back together. 47. A photo of all the new shiny (expensive) parts before they get bolted back on.. 48. Stay pins bolted back on along with lynch pins+chains. 49. Brakes reassembled,Brake shafts and pedal back on aswell as the clutch pedal. 2 Footrests reassembled and bolted back on. 50. The rarely seen far side of the tractor. The wishbones are back on now aswell. 51. The 2 bonnet catch handles bolted back on after a polish. Even they were covered in 3 bad coats of paint. 52. The dash fully bolted back on and the wiring has been started. 53. The rear end showing new check chains, brackets, lynch pin chains on the lift arms. The new ends on the lift arms. The list goes on.. This is as far as I have got with the tractor as of now. More few more small bits to put back on and she will be ready for the first start! (If all goes to plan)

Well to start off with I would like to apologise for how long it took me to continue this thread. Progress has been made but we are not there yet. 54. Fitting the manifolds. New gaskets manifold gaskets put on. Wire brushed and sprayed heat resistant black. Fuel pipe polished and silencer prepped and painted. 55. Dynamo and fan bolted back on. As it turns out the dynamo is not working. I should have guessed... aside from that she is coming on well. Putting the fan on was some fun. Threads gummed up,needs to be cleaned. Rinse and repeat for the next hole, etc. Typical ten minute job takes about 3 hours not helped by the fact I was in a freezing turf shed. 56. The tidied up radiator bolted back on aswell as pipework, etc. 57. Track rod ends greased up with as well as new track rod end rubbers fitted. Steering arms fitted and steering working. Front wheels even put back on. The front end's even dropped back down onto the floor. The coil has been put back on so she is getting near the first start. 58. Radiator fully piped up. Brand new water temp guage fitted on no bother. Fuel tank bolted back on. Distributor, cap and leads fitted back on. Shes nearly there now! Been waiting on this moment for 9 or 10 months at this stage! 59. For the first time in 9 months all 4 wheels are on the ground. This is her just put back in the shed after the first run and drive. 60. After the first run and drive. Shows the hydraulics still up. Hydraulics working grand first try (They were nearly rusted solid before the strip down).

And the video you have all been waiting for.. The first drive. All went well with no faulted or nasty surprises. 61. After that drive I fitted new plug wires which saw her going abit better. Then I took the back tires off the rims waiting for new tires and she has sat ever since. She will be ready for the 2014 show season but.

Don't expect your 2014 show season will include Wentworth, bit far to travel.a celebration of a town saved by grey fergies, they even have one on a stand as you enter the town. Ttfn Glenn Yes I would have an itch to scratch about tractors if my bro in law wasn't an agricultural type

yikes. spenny tyres. Good work you;re doing there. Ive had a few of those tractors, but diesel ones (awful) i expect the petrol ones not only start but produce more power. Ive also had an old Leyland and a '49 David brown two seater. Ive never actually used a tractor to do an work! just bought em to tinker and sell on at a small profit.

Well, 1 year and 2 months later I have........ Not got a vast amount done. 63. The wheels had all of their rust pits filled with Isopon P38, Another coat of oxide primer was then applied (Any remaining rust pits that were missed can easily be spotted at this stage and filled),This was keyed, a coat of 2PK primer was applied, sanded, another coat of 2PK primer was applied and that left the wheel as you see it. 64. The front wheels and 2 back mudguards got the exact same treatment as the back wheels. 65. And 3 or 4 coats of 2PK stoneleigh grey was applied wet on wet leaving the wheels looking like this. I can say without doubt that this is the best use I have ever found for The Sun newspaper. 66. Front wheels and Mudguards after 3 to 4 coats. These parts de-masked and were left to harden for around a week. They were then fitted to the tractor resulting in something along the lines of.. 67. This. New wheel nuts all round on the wheels and new nuts/bolts all round on the mudguards. Nearing the finish but still far from done. 68. The next part to tackle was the Distributor. I had painted this previously thinking it was in good working order but it turns out I was very, very wrong. The (remains) of the bearing at the bottom is what came out of the distributor. This was replaced with a bearing off eBay. If anyone needs to replace the bearing on theirs the bearing I purchased was called LJ1/2-2RS Imperial sealed ball bearing. Total cost £1.96. 69. The swinging drawbar was next step. There were 2 cracks about 2'' long down the welds on the bottom of either side. These cracks were ground out and welded. The 2 tabs that can be seen sitting up on top of the drawbar were both broken off. 2 of these were made and welded onto the drawbar. After this a rather patchy coat of primer was applied. 70. The next and final part of the project was the bonnet. Now thankfully I had a very good, straight rust free bonnet to start with. The only things to sort were.. - A number of holes that were drilled around the sides of the bonnet top (These were welded up) - A damaged T piece (this is the aluminium part between/below the grilles). This was badly damaged around the starting handle hole. - A number of holes which were drilled into the T-piece. This was alloy welded by a local engineering works. - 3 damaged grille fins which were replaced. 71. This is the damaged to the T-piece. 72. And this is the repair. I made a template out of card, traced the template onto sheet aluminium. Shaped it, folded it and drilled it. Also can (or can't?) be seen is the holes that were drilled into the T-piece are now filled with weld and ground down. 73. The next step was to replace the damaged grille fins. 3 were heavily rusted so the grill was dismantled by opening each tab of every fin on one side of the grille. This allows you to pull one of the runners/grille sides off. From this I pulled out the damaged fins, Put the replacements in and reassembled it. 74. Reassembled and given a quick sand ready for oxide primer. 75. The entire bonnet was sent away for sandblasting and lets say it was either done on a monday morning or very late on a friday evening. After I got it back a good few hours were spent cleaning all the missed spots down with a angle grinder. The entire bonnet was given a go over with a vibrating sander to remove the harsh surface left by the sandblaster and it was then ready for oxide primer. 76. All the parts of the bonnet in oxide primer. That brings us up to date. I hope to have the tractor finished for mid April 2015 for the start of the show season. I think I said that in 2014 aswell.. And probably 2013 now that I think of it.

Nice to see a TED20 on here. I've got a 1951 myself hiding in the back of the garage. I bought it 5 years ago, run it round the field a couple of years ago and it's sat there since. Needs the bonnet painting and a thermostat housing. Can't run it on the road though as I don't think it was ever registered.

Well, It took some time but she is finished! 77. After the bonnet got its few coats of oxide primer, 3 or so coats of filler primer it got 3 or 4 coats of 2 pack topcoat. 78. Beginning to reassemble the bonnet. Fully painted inside and out, new bolts used throughout on reassembly. 79. The distributor got a proper rebuild using a new bearing and new bushing, new points, new condenser, etc. Shown here after being repainted again with the top half given a light polish and lacquer. 80. Sitting awaiting the rebuild distributor, bonnet and finishing touches. 81. The bonnet fully bolted together (including polished+lacquered T-piece) and fitted. And after fitting the swinging drawbar, 9 hole bar, bonnet badge, rear numberplate, the mesh screen for the air cleaner on the dashboard and most importantly the potato sack on the seat she is finished. 82. 83. 84. 85. 86. 87.
