The dashboard on my Bedford Rascal is very old, grey and tired (bit like me really): I've not been able to locate a replacement (in black), therefore I was pondering removing the existing one and spraying it black. Are there any tips that anyone can share? thanks

Flock or if you want to do DIY job halfords vinyl dye does a pretty good job without any prep work. Just stick to light coats!

If you removed the brush and scourer that could be mine. They all seem to fade in the same places.
I was gonna flock mine. I had some done in my mx5 and it looks really good.

Really appreciate all the feedback and the link to the other thread (cheers nomad)
PM sent to Prey asking about pricing for flocking..... (not sure how much of a mess I'd make of it if I tried it myself)

Being a Rascal owner too, I'm going to say try and keep it original and work with what you've got. Don't get me wrong, I like flocking but see it as more of a motorsport thing which only tends to work in race cars/track cars or some sports cars when used in moderation. When used in something 'normal', even if modified, I reckon it falls into a similar category to people who put fake carbon on things. Maybe not as bad, but still not quite apt. Especially in a small commercial vehicle. The only time I would use flocking on my own cars (and will be doing soon) is to line the inside of the glove box, arm rest drawer and other storage areas within the car...purely to stop things like keys, pens and other things rattling around so much. (Damn this OCD!!) I'd start with something like linseed oil or peanut butt worked into the plastic to try and bring back some depth and lose the dullness. Painting would be a last resort because once it starts chipping (and Rascal dashboards are very hard plastic so prone to chipping) it'll probably look worse than it does now. Here is mine, I haven't ever used anything on mine, just cleaned it with soapy water. The glove box lid has faded a lot but if it ever bothered me that much I'd just start treating it as I mentioned above rather than trying to paint it or flock it. The top of the dash is quite over exposed in this shot, but you can see how just a nice clean brings the dashboard back to a neat grey: Give it a chance before starting down a path that will be difficult and costly to rectify if it goes wrong or you don't like the end result. The best example of this are all the Mk3 Escort owners who wish they hadn't thrown out their cracked dashboards in favour of a Mk4 dash. What they would do to have the original back in place now, even with the cracks! Food for thought.

thanks for the reply Mystery Machine.... I believe my wife has some linseed oil in one of her "arts and crafts" cupboards. After lunch, I'll remove the dash from the van, give it really good scrub down and then try the linseed oil approach. simplest & cheapest option to go with and judging by the look of your dash, if I can get it close to that finish I'll be very happy.
I have two basset hounds that I chauffeur around in the van and I'm not sure that dog hair and flocking is going to be a good mix.
Prior to this posting I wasn't even aware of flocking, but I might consider it for the dash in the hot-rod as that is all totally custom anyhow.

You could get a spare dash of any colour and try out your plans on that, then you havent knackered the original one if it goes wrong.

I've always found flocking to be OK if you never touch it with dirty hands.

That was my original idea - although they seem to a bit difficult to get hold of (okay, I spent 30 minutes googling to no avail) If someone does have a "spare" knocking around in the back of a garage, PM me and lets see if we can make a deal.

RC car paint is good for plastic and its flexible, its not cheap but it comes in some mad colours.

If the dash is relatively easy to remove, I'd have a crack at painting it. Halfords do Flexible plastic bumper paint in black & dark grey. There's a prep spray for it which is usually next to it on the shelf. Give a good clean and light key with the prep spray then paint it. I know it's for bumpers but it's flexible and seems to be OK with summer temps and winter ones. I've used it loads.

I dropped Tim an email but haven't heard back yet - I think all the stock he has is what he shows in the eBay store and a lot of those items state, "when it's gone it's gone". Prey came back with a really good price for the flocking - I will keep my eye out for a spare dash and might experiment with that one (I'm also considering having the flocking done in the Midget aswell as the hot-rod as they are more "show cars" than everyday-ers) I took the advice from Mystery Machine and removed the dash, stripped it down, gave it a good scrubbing and then linseed oiled it. I am pleasantly surprised by the end result: Quite a difference from the original photo. Let's see how long it last for. If nothing else, it now smells very nice!

Does look quite a lot better
slight hijack - does flocking help stop heat absorption? Thinking of it for the camper as a means of tidying but also as the dash gets REALLY hot in the summer
