Ever since I was I kid, when my dad got me mags of Street machine, and Custom car this guy was always in one mag or other making artwork different OK this was the 70's so young sorts may find it indifferent but at the time and now, I think his stuff is amazing Thank you Fred.
Being different was what it was all about to me. I did not want to follow all the stuff that had been going on - sculls, demons and copies of fantasy artwork mainly. When I said I was going to do scenes of Paris and pastel shades on a Mach 1 Mustang people either just laughed or said it wouldn't work. Luckily the owner of the Mustang loved my designs. Even the paint shop where I did it were not enthusiastic, they painted it white (as I asked) and I did the rest (with the exception of the 'cobwebbing' which I supervised). Funny really as they tried to take the credit for it and later did a copy that even fooled me in small photos in a mag. Not exactly being different. I thoroughly enjoyed tucking myself away in the country and coming up with concepts that I knew would surprise people when they appeared at shows. Like the 'Holkham Hall' Rolls and 'Temple Island' Rolls. I remember making an appearance at a big show at Aintree and being asked to judge the show. To everyones surprise I gave 'best mural' to a Land Rover with little country scenes on the doors. It was so 'right' and it was done by the owner, not a professional. I wonder where that is now? Original ideas are generally the best.

I grew up looking forward to street machine every month. I used to spend my school dinner money on it (along with Custom Car and Hot Rod and Custom) Your artwork was inspirational Ray. The Enforcer Mustang is one of my all time favourites. Here's a picture of you back in the day ;D

Mr Airbrushman, Going back a few years ago, I believe you muraled a Corvair GreenBriar window van For Frank Smith/Pete Bailey who If my memory is correct it was about the early 70s, Possibly painted ar Eurekas down in Deptford arches, The van was painted either silver or light gold, sat on Appliance X spokes and was muraled by you, it was called Mississippi shuffle, I think is was Eurekas shop van, Smithy always had it down the Sidney Arms in Lewisham most nights!!!! Do you know if it survived, or do you have any pics, assuming my memory is right and you painted it? ?

Yes I did 'Mississippi Shuffle'. It was a Chevy Greenbrier owned by Pete Bailey of Eureka. The name was his idea, I did the rest. He painted it white, I did everything else (panels, woodwork, pinstriping, murals, lettering). I don't think it is still around sadly.
I think you will find it was BILL Smith who use to hang out down there.
I don't know how to stick pictures on here, but if you go to - www.raymumford.com - there are several photos in the miscellaneous section of mobile art. You are welcome to put them on here.
And thanks for the comments guys. If you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

This is the sort of thing I love this place for, just my cup of tea. Of course, now you've made me realise what my Princess really needs is some murals down the flanks, but what on earth of? Obviously, it would have to be something Mumford style, not just the humdrum fantasy and sci-fi stuff, but something properly relevant to the car and to me as the owner. This has got me thinking about a whole new set of ideas to set off the planned purple paint and Lotus restyling.

I saw the Temple Island Rolls and the Bullit Mustang at Billing Aquadrome last year and the detail on them is incredible.
