yea LandyPhil's rally landrover is quite interesting with a good history, i've enjoyed the thread as it's developed
ok another couple of suggestions for knowledgeable answers to any technical queries you may have would be the Series2 forum (as it says it's Series 2/2a orientated so don't argue the toss there over yours) and for modifications i feel i should recommend the AULRO forum as i haven't found one that shows up quite such a varied engine/transmission/axle swap list in the various threads
there's a couple of knowledgeable folks on landrover uk as well but you'll have to either ask specific questions and hope they notice or hunt down specific modification threads there
i personally don't care too much what you do to your landrover, you paid for it it's yours to do with as you wish, if you think you can fit IFS and get it working effectively that's up to you, for me my landrovers will stay more or less as they came out of the factory with only subtle changes except for the possible LT77 box in my bitsa to go with the 200tdi under the bonnet
these motors are supposed to be fun, some folks take pleasure in keeping them stock or very close, some folks think the pleasure is in modifying them as far as they can

great stuff lads, think i now have pretty much everything covered.
Have discovered that my local bike breakers is also into landies, he even has the same name as me! so i'll be popping down on my day off and getting a door top. also have decided the first proper mod will be a front panhard rod, my parabolics don't hold the axle as stiffly as the stock leaves and so some lateral location ought to vastly improve the accuracy of the steering. Will use a stock rover rod, not sure if a defender/disco/rangie chassis bracket would even come close to fitting but i'll have a go.

Like the landy, chassis rot looks about like mine. I am fighting with butchered 39 year old wiring in mine to make curse word work.
As far as I know mine is on its 7th engine, this one is a badly wired up 200di bolted to the original box and diff ratios

good idea. the defender style chassis bracket is a kind of drop plate that fixes to the chassis and steering box so probably not very useful. this is the important/hardest part because the panhard rod needs to be horizontal at normal ride hight, and the axle is much lower than the chassis rails.

well went to see my new land rover friend today, answered many little question (how to work the window washer). he has a pretty tight 88" with a 300 tdi with series box and over drive, also a 2a well chopped up, a series 3 big red camper and a very rotten series 3.
i got a brand new left door top with fittings for €20, on offer is also wolf steels and nearly brand new michelin xzl's, which i'll snap his hand off for in two weeks when my money is looking better.
got the underside mud washed off, can see a few more patch's have been applied in the past, bit of lube on the clutch pedal, and greased the steering ball joints, one of the nipples is wrecked.
no camera, no pics, will get some when i go down for more parts, if i remember the camera.

sod all done today and no time next week to do any more either, curse word. my dad painted the bike trailer with my paint, tis darker then i want but with limestone wheels and roof it should be okay, may need some sort of sign writing on the door to break it up. Also previously i greased up all the track rods and noticed the steering was a lot better, but i noticed one of the grease nipples was pretty much rusted away. today i grabbed the whole track rod a gave it a twist, SQUEEK SQUEEEK! new track rod there any way lol

No paint yet, weather is a bit all over the place, don't wanna get caught with wet paint and rain. 5 new wolf rims, 4 barely use michilin zxl's, a s/h track rod and a wiper arm, €400. is i jammy or what? not a moment too soon either.

half painted mangulated old door top and slotted in the new one been sorting the odd rattles, now i can hear my self think and the front RHS wheel bearing grumbling. Also the gearbox is hitting some where when under prolonged load like going up a steep hill. i've order the 52mm box spanner thats need to rake off the hub, but i still need to find the right imperial bolt used to take off the hub, it's quite seized on as evinced by the drum lip being all broken from hammer blows.

Well, that's looking a DAMN SIGHT better/tidier! I'm a big fan of Wolf rims - have them on Leonard. I used to run XZLs - they're absolutely astonishing off-road, and have the toughest side-walls of any off-road tyre. However, watch them in the wet! Admittedly my set are VERY old, but even given the slightest hint of moisture, Leonard would step sideways at EVERY roundabout! It's fun at first, but gets really tiring when you're just trying to get somewhere! I'm currently running BF Goodrich All Terrains. It's my favourite all-round 4x4 tyre. Very nearly as good off-road as the XZLs and a LOT better on-road. Enjoy your Landy - they're great old things

coupla of weeks ago, i nearly flattened the garage, no brakes! the day before i had just adjusted the hand brake, save the light bulb went on over my head afterward, i though this leak was the axle not the wheel cyclinder so off with the wheel yuk new bits and a clean: while bleeding it up, pop, wtf!? enough scares already, worried about being on the road now bought a sealey ak506 brake line flaring kit from ebay, only made 3 flares (not including fuckups, practice go’s and mistakes), the clamp for the pipe is worn already, bucket of wibblepoo.

ok dunno how much you know about 109 rear brakes or what you've worked/found out but i'll warn you that the shoes are handed, there's a front shoe and a rear shoe....
mix them up and you could easily have no brakes again after the first couple of applications, the linings are different lengths and the pins the snail cam rides on are in different positions, they can "JUST" be adjusted up to give a decent feeling brake but they can and do hop off the snail adjusters if the shoes are fitted wrong equalling the pedal instantly dropping to the floor again, it happened to me when i first put mine together
i also think that spring is supposed to be behind the shoes to help keep them pulled back to the backplate, this keeps the friction surface square in the drum as the backplate is specially shaped for them to lean against
whilst you're replacing the hard lines i'd suggest you replace the flexibles as well as they do start to swell inside and restrict flow in both directions

i think i have 'em right, were on and off four times 'till i was happy. the bottom spring is on the inside pulling the shoes inwards and the pins for the snail cams were the same length both sides, still no harm in looking again. got taking the drum off down quick now
