Found a shiny piece of plastic that was also flexible. put a slight curve on it and laid up some glass, rough sized using the vinyl off an actual 911 dash as a template. I can strip out the current array of gauges and fit a section of new glass in. This will be trimmed up to fit the genuine pork gauges. As you can see the current gauges are a) not right b) fitted into a curse word piece of alloy new gauges

I can't help thinking the logbook might be an issue if it still says Variant on it especially as it doesn't use a standard chassis. It's a shame as it's a nice looking car. This sold on ebay for 7.5k

Back seat area now like this, as i offered up a 911 rear bulkhead trim panel. Not perfect but OK...its a bit warped and not an A1 fitment as the Covin bulkhead is slightly different. Part of it was cream vinyl, so used some HRG black vinyl dye spray behind the backrests so not that visible. Side panels were removed and stripped of vinyl again. You'll recall i wasn't happy with the finish. Also took the opportunity to add some glass to make the fitment better. I oversized the glass then trimmed it down for a snug fit

Some of the thin stick-on vinyl with brushed metal (even black) finish might work well for the dash.

Do you sit further back in the car, relative to a beetle? The gearlever looks a long way forward in your latest pics. Mind you, perspectives are distorted with the dash out etc.. Do I remember you saying you were going to shorten/adjust it at some point?
It's looking really good now, but I appreciate you've still a long way to go. How did it feel to drive? There are loads of proven ways of making a Beetle handle, with the only limit being the depth of your pockets. If the basic car feels right (and it's certainly looking right), then I'd have thought the potential for evolutionary tweaking and improving could be endless.
You've certainly turned what started out as a bit of a bodge into a very nice thing. Well done.

The dash is about 3 inches further into the cabin compared to a beetle, so that puts the gearstick closer to the dash if in first or third. Thats why the gearstick is cranked. that stick is a standard beetle base with a thicker steel rod welded on, then bent. I need to lop about 2 inches off the top and crank it a bit more. the car drives fine but haven't tested the handling, mainly as the tracking hasn't been done - its getting a lowered front beam with new ball joints etc yet. i also need to mod the front pan to accommodate a spare wheel, so i expect the spare wheel will weight the nose down to aid front end stability (at 70, it got a tad floaty)

Maybe one of the Beetle "quick" shift style levers would fit and give a shorter throw too. Something like this: link
I know what you mean about "floaty" front ends. My bugs always drove better with a bit of weight in the front, even if it was just my toolbox, spare and a full tank of fuel.

Maybe one of the Beetle "quick" shift style levers would fit and give a shorter throw too. Something like this: i've fitted an empi quickshift plate so that should sort it. i did also have a genuine beetle GT quickshift stick which was superb but it was too short and didn't fall to hand, hence why i modded a standard stick so its would be just right. I've got one of those trigger sticks somewhere too
