i have exhausted my supply of gears that match the chain now so i think a re-think is in order i do have a gearbox from the ride on but that does leave the problem of a clutch, and I'm trying desperatley to avoid a belt drive but its looking like the best option at the mo

OK heres my 2p........Youre going to need a lot of revs to pull away.Disconnect the governor on the engine to allow it to rev better. There are different springs that give more or less power to push the shoes onto the clutch housing. Also ,as a general rule, make sure all bearings and bushes on the drive train are running very freely, and also pump up the tyres hard ,all these things will give a bit less resistance.Interesting to see what the final gearing will be to allow this thing to pull away, and also how long the clutch will last. Have built many odd ball go karts, but I always stay clear of larger wheels due to the high cost of gearing sprockets and plate wheels.FWIW..a good combo is a Honda 50 engine, running standard diam engine sprocket, with the standard wheel sprocket mounted on the axle. They go like the clappers with mini 10" wheels! Wheel barrow size wheels on the same set up allow a real quick pull awaybut less top end.Another thing you could try is doing away with the tractor axle and using a basic rod go kart type= less weight? and less (probably knackered) bushes etc to turn .Youre asking a lot of that engine to power that size kart.

thanks for the reply i always knew this cart was a very big ask for that little motor but it seems to push it along ok its just this clutch that really lets it down and i am not sure i can make it work i have one more set up to try using a gearbox (reverse would be a bonus as the turning circle isnt very small)but we will see

we use the same type of dry centrifugal clutch on the karts at work. they're connected to a 160cc engine. Thats for the kids to drive. (on a side note the adult karts are a 200-and-something-cc engine with a wet clutch). are you sure the clutch isn't knackered? I've just collected an older one from work. A few of the tiny roller bearings have fallen out but its got 90% of them left. Think thats the only reason we changed it. Still engaged okay (will be clanky though ) Of any use to you?

Cheers for the offer but due to the fail clutch i have and the poor lock on the cart i have decided to go with full ride on mower style gearbox with reverse just waiting for a scrap ride on at the right price (like free) but thanks for the offer

That's ace! Reckon the idea of a small bike engine would be the solution though, like other have said. You've clearly got the skills to make it fit - now make it happen!

skip the tractor gearbox, that 114cc is just not man enough, and will be even more unhappy about turning a tractor gearbox. a 190cc briggs can be had off a rusted out push mower for nothing and can be converted to horizontal shaft for even less.
sticking with what you have, have you checked the valve clearance? they can get tight with age and the power and compression drop off dramatically. what gear ratio do you have?

Clutch is not up to it either thoufgh and the 114cc will be ditched in favor of at least a five hp to push the mower gearbox i have a bigger horizontal shaft engine but the fsct is the cart is too heavy for that go cart clutch What i need is aparently a wet go cart clutch but they are expensive and this is being done on a zero budget so i will have to make work whatever i can scrounge Thanks for the comments guys keep the ideas coming all gratefully accepted

ok been a while and nothing has happened because i have been waiting for one of these it arrived the other day free hasnt ran for a while but that was easily sorted with a quick call to a mate of mine who is into his mowers, he said pop the pull start off unscrew the pull start clutch hit the flywheel off and clean the points, well he was right on the money she fired up first time and ran nice i had just long enough to try the gearbox and succes it moved then the pull start clutch i had not done up tight enough unscrewed and the flywheel lifted and tore the key in half (woops) however aparantly this will do it no harm so i just need a new key so i started pulling bits off and cleaning them up a bit its amazing what a lick of paint will do so i hope to have more regular updates again and I'm hopefull this mower will provide the power and drive i need getting excited again now

ok so more progress has been made finished cleaning up the engine well i havent done the carb yet but its nearly done, so i moved on to fitting and all went well i cut the bed off the back of the old mower so i have all the engine mounting holes and gearbox ones including the clutch pulley and belt guides so i don't have to mess around lining up stuff, if u remember when i first welded the axle on i had it back to front and had to cut it off and weld it on again well guess what, now i have changed the drive set up its the wrong way round again so off it came and back on the correct way round anyway pictures i think so with the bed on and the engine and gearbox sort of mounted time to test fit the body and see how much modding i have to do to make it all fit turns out apart from some trimming of the internal supports nothing fits like a glove, i am well chuffed i think its going to work well but the gearstick gator needs some fettling let me know what you think
