I've a spare stalk from the last Trabantwelt order, so I'll swap them and see. It was also suggested I swap in the wiper knob to see if there's a problem with the knob, or the switch in the dash. Not a lot else to report at the moment, had to wash some of the patina off after laeving it parked under a bird's nest for a week, it's nearly all the same shade of blue now at least. I tightened up the fan belt, as it squealed like a piggy on the first damp day we had, but it's looking pretty tired. Aren't they supposed to have teeth? Luckily, I discovered MicksGarage stock a few service bits that'll fit in Trabis, so I don't have to order from Germany . Nothing OEM, just universal bits that the Trabi happens to use, like the 1000x10 belt, filters, sparkplugs and wipers. I'll be availing of their free shipping to get a replacement belt, wipers and some other bits tomorrow. Performed a wee brake test earlier, looks like the right's locking up quicker. I've a buddy who has access to a ramp, so we'll have a look at adjusting them later this week.

there is something curious about the brake cylinders on trabants, there seems to be a left and right set, and when mounted wrong, could result in this behaviour... need to check mine when i have to too... this is that you have to watch for the brake shoe is supposed to fit in here, and that makes that there is a difference in left and right positioning of the brake cylinder. anyways, haven't checked it on mine, as i just read a topic on this on a dutch forum this week. fan belt can be either with or without teeth, the belt with teeth are just made for tighter corners (thats what my local moped tuner used to tell me anyway) i believe i have fitted a belt from trabantwelt, without teeth. but the belt that came off did have them.. (not sure, shouldn't really matter!) back in the ddr i believe they fixed a trabant with whatever they had....

First night time trip last night, high beam clicker seems to have resolved itself with some extra usage, its back to one click on, and one click off again. I swear, she's more like a living breathing organism than a car. The more attention she gets, the better she runs!
I'll have to rummage around my stash to see if I have any better H4 bulbs, the light output isn't great, even on highs.
One other thing. I've been advised not to run the heating on full heat, as this can cause the engine to over heat. This goes against what I know of watercooled engines, has anyone heard aboutthis before?

You can fit I believe complete headlights from mk2 golf incl angel eyes etc. never heard about that before but I've never driven a trabi or any other air cooled car maybe see what the beetle lot says

yup, golf/polo mk1/2, something from that should fit somewhat straightforward.
had a asked around about those rims from my tie rop topic.. they are wartburg rims, 4x160, you do need "newer"/longer studs and a lower camber adjuster of 12mm and a 20mm spacer. on the rear you need a 18mm camber corrector and also the "newer"/longer studs
the camber correction thinges could also cause the use of longer brake hoses.
the camber corrections are to get the rim to fit in the wheel arch, the 20mm spacer is to clear the leafspring.

That's so true, and if you wash it you gain 10bhp!

Saturday morning was dry and bright, so I thought I'd tackle a couple of jobs ahead of the car test this week. I looked at replacing the fan belt, but quickly realised I couldn't get into the old one, so I just tightened up the existing one. There was a spare wiper knob in the box of bits'n'bobs that came with the car, so I slotted that in, hopefully there'll be no more falling off mid journey! I fitted a new set of wipers, and added a second fuel inline filter, rather than replacing the existing one, as I didn't want to lose the flow sensor. Wiper knob + Stickerbomb survivor = Light switch!

After the highs, the lows. Took a short trip to the local park, and on the way back, noticed the smell of burning rubber. Popped the bonnet to be greeted by this. New fan ordered, I just hoped I haven't damaged the engine. I may have driven a couple of miles with no cooling...

Fan housing cracked around where the blot holds it in place. Belt is tired, but not broken, fan still spins OK, alternator is fine too.
On your car, do you have a metal band holding your fan in place? I don't, and I'm wondering if that is the cause. There are two types of fan on trabant welt, I've ordered the later version that use the stud to hold it in place, but we'll see if I need a band as well.

I've taken Angela out a couple of times depending on the weather. At one local Cars & Coffee, I was presented with this, by a friend who spotted it on Bratislava Airport. DSC_0561 by cianhanrahan, on Flickr

Small update time. The Socialist era 12V socket is a lot smaller than its modern equivalent, so I took a look at what was involved in fitting a more modern unit. Like everything else in the Trabant, it is a really simple solution. The red wires are positive, and the bottom screw hole grounds the connection to the monocoque. I ran the wires form the new socket in to the same screws, and clamped everything back down. I can remove it without changing anything else and revert back later. 12Volt socket by cianhanrahan, on Flickr Using a scrap bracket from a Mini DV camera, and a couple of ties, I now have a flexible bracket for a phone charger, or an FM transmitter (for maximum 90's style points!) Modern 12V socket wired inline. by cianhanrahan, on Flickr I've taken her out on a couple of day trips, to the Jumpstart 2014 show in Loughmore, and a more casual meet at the Vee, both in Co. Tipperary. Coming back from Jumpstart I had trouble starting the car, a problem I traced back to an inline fuel filter I had fitted a few months ago. They're designed for systems with fuel pumps, but as the Trabi doesn't have one, it got airlocked. So I removed it, and replaced the spark plugs at the same time, and she's starting 100% better now. New Toy: Spark Plug Socket by cianhanrahan, on Flickr Turning heads at Jumpstart 2014 by cianhanrahan, on Flickr Trabant at the Vee by cianhanrahan, on Flickr I also fitted a set of ropey wheeltrims for some "Balkan Chic". I've since lost one. That's 2.50 I'll never see again…

Tiny update! Polished her up, used her for a few odd jobs, and took her to Cars and Coffee last night! New tyres, wheel caps and spares planned for the August RRG expedition, along with these:

Awesome! She's looking great, I'm loving the patina! I brought back some window flags from Berlin and will most definitely be fitting them for cruising the streets of Glasgow!
