Few more pics - Later in the evening we were all in a good mood but I was saddened by Allison`s departure but I was sure she was smiling down on me. A group of us were having a beer when one of the guys started talking in a Scottish accent I recognised him from around 30 years ago when we attended the North East Rod and Custom shows in Durham - how did I remember him ? Shug Hanchard of the "So What Speed Shop" had settled in Cali and opened a hot rod shop - small world indeed. We left the Salt late and headed into town in celebratory mood - naughty boy ! - There was a great atmosphere in town as everyone had enjoyed the first day of racing and the cars and crowds were out - After another feed and a few beers it was off to a nice soft bed again. Tomorrow was the long drive to South Lake Tahoe.

Must bring back some bitter sweet memories re-telling this tail pal, but keep on as it's fascinating. It amazes me how much '50s metal is still around in the states, damn the damp British weather!

Sunday 11th Aug my last day at the Salt and a looong drive ahead beckoned. Big Tim and the other guys were up even earlier as they wanted to get an early run at the record and all the vehicles in the impound were escorted out at 7.30 am just as I was turning up. Back into the staging lane and another wait for "Sooty`s" run - Once again Tim got suited up - and away we go - CLICK ON THE PIC FOR VIDEO CLIP After a bit of confusion with the timing guys it was found that Tim wasn`t as fast as yesterday but was now the holder of the new record in his class at 177.978 MPH - Excellent ! www.scta-bni.org/Bonneville/Records/BNIrecs_cat_f.htmI had made some great friends out there on the Salt and Tim presented me with a team T shirt and asked if I would come back again ( I would love to) but I said I would have to wait and see what happens. I bid my new friends farewell knowing the truck was one day going to run 200 MPH so enabling Tim to join an exclusive club. Not bad for a daft Geordie lad. I grabbed a handful of the salt off the truck to bring back home as a reminder of my time there. I then wondered how I would get a bag of white powdery stuff in a plastic bag through Customs ! I then thought about the drive to South Lake Tahoe which by the end of the day would mean I would have driven around 520 miles about twice as far as I had driven in one day before. It was 11.30 am and I was already feeling tired and that was before I got behind the wheel. I was now wishing Carole was here to help me drive but she had more important matters to deal with back home. I slowly drove off the Salt happy to have ticked a box but sad at leaving such a wonderful set of people and a truly wondrous place. When you set foot on the Salt all those images of The Campbells, Art Arfons, Bert Monroe and other famous racers with equally famous vehicles come into your mind and it was an honour to have stood on the same place as they had. I wasn`t looking forward to the drive but set my mind in autopilot and set off West again. TBC

I forgot to add that the Salty Box crew were fantastic hosts and we had a great laugh together. They did not let me pay for a meal or the hotel room and looked after me while I was there. These are genuine people who love life, love their friends and family and love the Salt. I am now infected and they say there is no cure for Salt Fever and the only relief from the pain is to get a yearly dose of Salt. (hope my good lady is reading this)

Awesome trip you're having. Thanks for taking the time to tell the story and show the pictures. I so want to get to the salt one day, hopefully that day is sooner rather than later.
It must have been hard times with all the mixed emotions going on. But good on you for keeping at it and making the dreams come true.

Tuesday 13th Aug not much to report about today but Brendan and I were going to stay the night in Monterey which would be our base whilst working at Pebble Beach - did I tell you guys that I was a volunteer to work the Concours d`Elegance show at Pebble Beach ?? - www.pebblebeachconcours.net/Well Brendan was late in from work and it was already dark, The intention was to stay at the hotel and get up early the following day as he was showing his `55 Chevy - at a small but exclusive by invitation only show in Carmel at the Mission. The car was ready and I was to follow in the hire car which I now nicknamed "Salty" as everywhere it stopped it left a deposit of salt behind as there was so much still in the wheel arches. This proved to be quite amusing over the course of the week. I was sitting outside Brendan`s house setting the GPS for the 75 mile trip when he shot off in the `55 into the darkness. I thought he had gone for gas and I also saw his rear lights weren`t working. 20 mins later I am still sitting there wondering what was going on. I called him and a couple of minutes later replied asking where I was as he thought I had followed him straight out ! I eventually caught up with him about 15 miles down the road but it had given him time to fix the lights as a fuse had blown. We arrived at the hotel late, had a beer and hit the hay.

At this point I will explain how and why I was in California. 6 years ago Carole and I visited the San Francisco area on holiday and I always like to take a car event in at the same time. I also visit a forum called "Chevy Talk" and it was my intention to visit the Goodguys event at Pleasanton which is held a couple of times a year. It was November so it was their "fall" event. I asked a question on Chevy Talk as to what was going on in the area when we were visiting SF and Brendan chipped in with a couple of ideas. We met up with him at the show and hit it off straight away. He is of Irish descent so has a great sense of humour and is a great car guy. We keep in touch on a regular basis and 3 years ago paid him a visit to catch up. Last year Carole and I worked as volunteers supporting the 2012 Olympics by working with the Press Team at St. James Park, Newcastle which was a once in a lifetime chance to partake in such a memorable event. I am a big football fan and met top players (Rafael De Silva, Man Utd for example) during the event. Brendan followed my exploits on Facebook and asked me if he could swing it would I like to volunteer for the car show at Pebble Beach - Err YES ! He had been working there for the last few years and managed to get me onto the team. As Carole and I were already on holiday in the USA this just extended the stay by another 3 weeks which logistically was easy to do. The rest of the stuff like the visit to the Salt just fell in to place. I was really looking forward to the show which is the top event on the planet. The Concours D`Elegance was to be my next adventure !
