So then, my third car...I really should get a license some time soon... My latest acquisition is a Triumph Herald 948 S. Sadly, the S does not stand for sport, or speed, but instead for standard. What this basically means is that it has very little in the way of equipment, such as half a carpet. I'm afraid I know very little about Heralds, and even less about the 'S' model, so if anyone can tell me anything, It'd be greatly appreciated! What I liked about the car was it's honest and original state, what you see is what you get. It's a bit tatty, with buts of rust cropping up all over the place and poor paint, but it is purely cosmetic, the car itself is very solid. Plus, the engine runs sweet as anything, the only problem being that the battery is not charging, which I think is due to a frayed wire from the battery, (not much mechanical knowledge, sorry for not being so specific). But everything else works, it got it's MOT on Thursday in-fact. A classic Triumph with a solid body, working mechaincs and working electrics...sorcery?! Also, the PO (who runs rarebits4classics.com) tells me that this is the only known working/running example of a Herald S, excluding one in Japan! & this man is writing a book on these cars, so I trust his word! This means it's actually more likely to see a group of Ferrari 250 GTO's coming the other way than it is one of these - that was a cool realisation Plans? Atm keep it standard, I did think if I ever got myself a Herald it's go low on banded steels, but I just enjoy the car so much as it is, I don't really see a need to change it. It'll be treated to a proper clean with a machine polish, and I'll finish off scrubbing the interior back up tomorrow, but that's all for now. If anyone's going to the Goodwood Revival, be sure to check out the new infield car-park, as this will be in there! Pictures will be uploaded tomorrow, thanks for looking!

The more cars you own without driving them, the more picky you become! (ask me how i know...)
Look forward to photos.

Well if it's the only known working standard in the UK i'd feel obligated to keep it standard (so to speak) Few years ago i bought an original 72 Mini 850, it had the magic wand gearstick and rubber matting instead of carpet, grew to hate the magic wand, ended up with a 1380 motor in it with conventional gearstick, magic wand 850 MK3's are rare now, kind of regreted modifying the one i had

Thanks for the comments Just purchased an original dealers marketing booklet, hopefully that'll shed some light on the s, and what it should or shouldn't have. Took some pictures, they're a but naff as I took them in the garage, but I'll take some more later on hopefully and upload those too. As you can see, these pictures are only of details of the car, restrictive room in the garage. Original sticker, kept by my Dad since the 80's Again, genuine sticker from 1976 Here's some pics of cleaning up the interior, genuinely thought it was grey when I purchased it... getting the sister involved My dad, in the best seat imaginable! (ok, that's a lie, there's a metal bar that digs right into your bum, but still a nice place to be...) I shall be getting my learners insurance sorted soon, never been so excited to drive a car in my life! Thanks for looking, all comments welcome

Well I bought the sticker from a shop at Brands hatch, there's a bloke who's got hundreds of period F1 stickers, although this was one of the cheaper ones at £10..pretty pricey. Just took some nice photos of it in the sun, will put them up later in the afternoon

My Dad used to have one which he restored (early 90's) but sold it a year or two after I was born. Unfortunately it ended up being scrapped on ebay in the early 00's after the new owner had let it get tatty. I remember him telling me how it took him months to find the proper 948cc engine + ancillaries for it. That little (sad) story aside, lovely car! I think Heralds wear patina like that very well. I'll be keeping an eye on this one for sure. Best of luck with learning to drive, my 13/60 is great fun. I was told the S stood for Spartan not sure though. No carpet (Edit 2: carpets at the rear, rubber mats at the front), rubber floor mats as standard and no chrome mouldings on the sides. I was also told it was produced as a cheap 'entry level' model by using up the old 948 parts while the then new 1200 was brought out. I've seen one brochure where it was aimed at newly weds( www.triumph-brochure-page.de/gfx/brochure_opt/herald/Herald_18.jpg). Edit: Found another brochure page from the same website, you might want to see. www.triumph-brochure-page.de/gfx/brochure_opt/herald/Herald_43.jpg

No coolant temp warning light either by the looks of it, nice old thing though, motoring in it's purest form

Thanks for the info on the brochures, the one I purchased is the same as that in your first link. Been coating the underseal under the bonnet in Swarfega, strips it off great to reveal brilliant blue bodywork. Also going to try and find my machine polisher, get that sorted out in the next few days. Thanks all for the kind words

Bill is the owner of rarebits and he knows all you need to know about Heralds! I know this forum is mostly about modified cars, but the rarity of the " s" should keep the mods to things that can be turned back once/if you get bored with it. The most important thing though is that you enjoy it, they are great cars and soooooo easy to work on. Good luck with it.

Yeah, at first I was thinking lowering springs with banded steels, but when I found out how rare it is, taking it back to it's original form is now the objective. Just looking forward to getting out there and driving it myself, and learning a few mechanical skills along the way!

lowering and banded steels would suit it well and can easily be put back, so I would say " go for it ", make it nicer to drive too. A lowering block and shorter front springs are not expensive and easy to do to get a nice ride height and role " as is " Enjoy !!!

Now that is basic! Lovely little thing tho It really is just a steering wheel and a speedo! what about the exterior?? id be tempted to leave it.....its aged.....sort any rust.......but leave it as it is.......OR!!!! matt/satin black??? It's being left 'as is', just going to have a damn good clean with a mop polisher; maybe today actually. A respray may be happening, but not for some time yet, and it'll be in the original colour. I agree the car would look great in black, but I've always been one for originality!

Love the car, I have a thing for poverty spec cars, one thing I would change is the rear suspension for the later type to avoid wheel tuck on lift off turn in,
