So this morning a new stablemate for my rather thirsty W115 arrived on a low loader... It's a 1984 Mk2 Golf GTI - one of the first complete with single tail pipe exhaust and Mk1 Campaign style side stripes. I've been looking for a reasonably priced, solid and original one of these for literally years! It has a fresh MOT but is currently a non-runner. I reckon I have traced this to a faulty fuel tank lift pump and knackered fuel pump relay so will hopefully be an easy fix. Not too shabby underneath at all: The previous owner has made a great start on re-commissioning the car with a complete new exhaust system, new brakes all round etc and I am keen to continue his good work. Unfortunately the seats have been replaced with a set of '90 Spec rainbow pattern items so I will be on the look out for a decent early interior.

Beautiful sir, congratulations. Good luck with the fix hope it's easy and done quickly! Thanks! It was a relatively easy one to sort in the end - just needed a new fuel pump relay and in tank lift pump. Now we have life. Watching this, I'd love an early spec MK2 More pix please Okie dokie... The car was a bit mucky inside and wasn't smelling too fresh so the first job was to do a thorough strip and clean. Carpets in good nick: Headlining out as the fabric had totally detached: New lift pump fitted: It just presses into the fuel sender so a pretty easy job to do! Seats are the rainbow type which are not correct for the year but will do for now: It's a bit of a shitter underneath:

Just managed to sort out the insurance so I'll be taking my first proper road excursion in it tomorrow. The K-Jet 8v engine seem to feel much more responsive than my old '91 Digifant 8v. As it stands: Hopefully I'll be able to find some of the correct orange stripe seats somewhere but I don't think it's going to be easy!

Aww, an '84 mk2 Gti. My first mk2 gti was the same year, albeit silver with big bumpers and on the deck. Great find - it must have been stored well over the years to be so clean. Keep us posted with updates.

Looks spot on to me, just keep searching for those seats! I had solar ones in my 85 scirocco, is it worth seeing if you can source material and get the current seats recovered, as whichever seats you find will be nearly 30 years old! Good luck with it, the k jets are great engines, they pull really well and give decent economy at the same time

Keep us posted with updates. Yep, I think it had been off the road garaged for 10 years or so up until this year which has definitely helped! Looks spot on to me, just keep searching for those seats! Good luck with it, the k jets are great engines, they pull really well and give decent economy at the same time I'll keep searching for sure, just might take a bit of perseverance I think. Recovering a set could be a good call! Dashboard and vents were all full of muck so I stripped them out for a good clean. Ordered some new decent quality German parts from AVS: And a new clutch cable from GSF: And started to attack the grotty engine bay: A few quick photos in the sun:

I've pretty much decided to go for a kind of retro 'club sport' theme for the project so have started making a few changes. I have this 70's Raid leather steering wheel and rare centre pad from a BMW 2002 kicking around so might chuck it in the Golf.

Lovely car! can't bring myself to approve the lowering though, not on such a rare an unmolested specimen! I would say of all the Mk2 golfs still in existence there will be more that have been lowered than not.

Lovely car, but the interior choices and spot lamp things have ruined it in my opinion but it is your car you do as you wish still a stunner, just my opinion don't take it to heart

Afraid i have to agree with the above, confused as you were on about original seat material then fit a bucket seat ?
Was really refreshing to see a lovely, standard original one while it lasted.

That drivers seat looks mega swish mind you, looks like it ought to be in a GT40 or something.

Hook, line and sinker! You lot are so easy to wind up. The spot light covers are a joke to cover the two gaping holes in the grille. Unfortunately a previous owner has binned the original spots and botched in a pair of '87> ones which don't fit so I have sold them. If anyone has a correct pair of early 7 slat inner lamps going spare feel free to get in touch? The car was in storage for a good 10 years or so as I said earlier. Whilst the exterior has survived well the interior is literally hanging. There is no headlining left and the windows were kept shut so everything has suffered from prolonged damp and resultant stink! As said above, the driver's seat was physically broken too. So yeah - if anyone can find me a complete interior like the following (or any mint but sensibly priced complete GTI interior) I will gladly buy it... Otherwise I might just have to fit the other front bucket (which I actually don't mind tbh!).

Re the modding, as long as it's all reversible then it's good to go IMO Tis bloody clean so please don't go overboard Don't worry - I don't plan to. Original wheels are staying, bodywork isn't being touched. It's not all that unmolested really - it had a socking great Scorpion DTM exhaust on it before, mix and match '90 spec interior, chopped loom for dodgy alarm, wrong clocks... the list goes on. Have another pic! This is the look I'm going for really - mostly stock, subtle drop, sporty but classic interior. P Slots are staying.
