I've never actually seen it, but have heard of a guy who drives an old Jag XJ6 and carries spare valvesprings in the glovebox. Apparently they let go relatively frequently and he changes them at the side of the road. isn't that usually a 'head off' job? As long as you don't let the valve fall down into the cylinder then it's not. I would imagine that you could bring that cylinder up onto compression and then take the valve spring off carefully?

Did a broken valve spring at the side of the road 30 odd years ago on a warm 1256 viva engine in a Bedford Beagle, wound the piston up to tdc, (it had been skimmed somewhat, it had double springs and one had snapped) Two screwdrivers compressed the remaining one, popped the collets, spring out, standard spring in, and as Haynes say, the assembly is the reverse of disassembly.

Jack, breaker bar, full metric socket set Selection of crimps, crimping tools, wire Various pliers and mole grips 8, 10, 13, 14, 17, 19, 22mm spanners Adjustable Screwdrivers (few with skinny handles suitable for ramming up heater hoses when matrix/valve starts chucking out water) Jump leads (normally used for starting other people!) Gallon of engine oil Two pints of pre-mixed coolant Petrol can Assorted bulbs, bolts, other paraphernalia and of course rope, bits of strap etc for lashing together the car/trailer/somebody elses car.
Not bothered with breakdown cover anymore, first time I needed it I called and they said they were closed. The second time they wanted £158 to remove my Volvo from a hedge And the third time I just gave up waiting -_-

Does he replace his battery when the old one goes flat?
