I got the coilover top mounts machined to accept mk3 Astra top mount bearings as these seemed better than the original Mirca plastic ring affair...
Had a free saturday so got up the unit and fitted the coilovers.
First job was to enlarge the top mount as the Polo damper has a larger diameter thread on top
Next up the bottom clasp although roughly the right width, but the bolt holes are too far apart. So you need to drill another hole, unfortunately the new hole over lapse the original one and doesn't leave much metal, so you need to weld a washer on to spread the load.
I cut a mount off the old shock so I'd get the new hole in the right position
pilot hole
and another
test fit
Spreader washers
and welded on
It's not pretty but I didn't want to get too much heat in to the damper and damage the internals. Plus from what I've seen some people don't even bother with reinforcing the new hole.
On the rear the top mount is basically the same. The bottom mount on the Polo coilovers is too wide, so I cut the mount and fabricated a new one out of some box section the right width, time was getting on so there are no pictures I'll remedy this when I'm next under the car.
Anyway with the coilovers on the car sits like this
Bit high at the rear which seems to because the Micra doesn't actually weigh enough to compress the helper springs on it's own. So they'll be coming out at some point this week. The front will come down a bit more, think I'll junk the helper spring there to.
Just after I got the car, I had a little bump with a Transit Connect which damaged the wing and broke the headlight mounts, which all got replaced. So I had a broken light with intact glass, it seemed rude not use it in some way. So I used it as a mould to make a fibreglass headlight cover.
Granted it looks like a block of spam at the moment, it needs loads more sanding and it'll need filler, but I'm happy with it so far
