That Caymen Blue (I think?) Estate is interesting. I was working at a Ford garage when they came out, they felt like a massive leap over the Sierra, I really liked them. Can't find any decent modified ones though, their time will surely come. Ruined Mondeo by fokuzx2, on Flickr

I had the same discussion with regard to the Alfa Romeo 156 as it recently appeared in practical classic magazine.
I don't see it as a retro car you don't need rose tinted glasses to think about buying one. As they are still a viable option to use as a daily car.
As someone on here once said retro is when nostalgia replaces the faults and you only remember the good parts of the car. The rose tinted glasses effect.
80s curse word cars are not seen for there faults anymore there seen as retro and quirks, 90s on the other hand they were just built as white goods and lack soul and expression IMO

That video sets the tone for me, I love the way the mondeo as evolved with time. The mk1 for me personally, can be considered a retro ride. My dad had a mondeo estate not so long ago and he swore by it!

I would say the ST24 might just be a little retro in the same way most "fast fords" are. The rest are the definition of Euro blob.

From my trip to Skegness stadium I can confirm that the Mondeo and the Cougar will soon be extinct as the 2 litre bangers were made up nearly entirely of them! (apart from a Rover 420 Tourer). Cheap plentiful and as tough as old boots.

I see them as more 'engine donor' than 'retro'. But there time must come I guess. I never really thought the Sierra would ever be retro but they are the last RWD main stream car Ford made so can be pidgeon holed to a certain 'era'. The Mondeo though was (as the Sierra was also described in its day) just a bland FWD shopping trolley like all the rest out there with lots of blow moulded plastic. And ther-in lies the problem. It's advanced far enough to not show it's age. Look at the difference in styling and technology between the Cortina and Sierra or the Mk2 & Mk3 Escort and there's a deffinate leap. Since the Mondeo came along, apart from sat-nav, not a lot of any substance has really changed. It'll no doubt find favour with the younger retro-riders to whom the reality of the cars age is much more apparent; which is a good thing. We can't all lust over Triumphs, Austins, Cortinas etc... or we'd all be buying and building the same cars. My Cortina was very much a retro classic when I bought it in about 2004, when it was 20 years old! The last mainstream RWD car ford made was the Scorpio, even the old Granada lived longer than the sierra. Well this is now my second mk1 having bought it off the OP and I can honestly say it is one superb car,1.8 td,does nigh on 600 miles a tank, sits at 85 on the motorway, never uses oil or water, starts first time everytime and is soooo comfy. Their sadly a bit like the Staffordshire bull terrier, strong, loyal, great with kids but over the years fallen into the wrong hands of chav ownership and sadly got a reputation for being a criminals car, looking rough and generally unloved. I bought mine on the strength of an article I read from an ex car dealer who said in his opinion the mk1 mondeo was the best built ford of all time,to such a point that when the mk2 came out, they were deliberately built to a lower standard as ford noticed the mk1's weren't coming in needing anything other than minor repairs. One thing I will say is that there was a far higher standard of machine used to make the brake discs on these than any previous car ford had made and the engineering tolerances were a lot tighter, they also had automatic gauging to check tolerances which was also a bit of a new thing. I think a mint citrine yellow mk1 saloonwith all the rs accessories may one day attain a decent price but realistically a mk1 mondeo will always be seen as a workhorse type motor which when a major issue arises the scrapman comes calling. This suits me as I use mine for trips back and forth to Scotland every five weeks and it means spares are in abundance for literally pennies. Some of the really mint mk2 st200's are holding out a bit on money but even slightly rough ones are now £7/800 cars and believe me they are a lot of car for the money, quick, handle well, reliable and so comfy. Not retro for me but I think they sent a message out at the time that ford could compete with the Germans on build and actually beat them,IMO the mondeo is an important car historically as realistically for the next 10 years after it the amount of Korean/J/eurobox copies of it was unbelievable, the saddest thing being that it set a standard of really bland cars that were so prevailent in the mid 90's to the early 2000's which were brought on by huge insurance premiums and mass vehicle thefts. The car world was changing, zetec replaced XR,ST replaced RS,red top vauxhalls were replaced with "ecotec",the golf gti went as fat as an american not on meth, everything car wise IMO went "safe" which is no bad thing overall but its really taken until about 5 years ago for some decent stuff to start coming through again hence why we probably love retro cars so much. Not retro enough yet,but perhaps when they hit 25 years old folk will see a nice specced up mk1 ghia v6 saloon in black, mint, black leather and think,"hmmm, how much are they on eBay?",a clear sign a cars "Made it"!!!!

I think so, I had one last year while the cortina was being fixed. Enjoyed it! Like others have said, quite frugal, pretty good handling, practical and can look very smart when tastefully tweaked here and there. As for the retro argument, I scrolled down through the readers cars on this forum and there are plenty of cars that people see as retro that were introduced the same time and often after the mk1's introduction. If we go along that line of thought then yes, if we use the readers page as proof, the mk1 Mondeo can be classed as retro.

I reckon the Mk1 is getting there, they have more or less disappeared off the roads now although i saw a really nice white ghia the other day. Ive got a soft spot for these having owned 4, 3 mk1's and a mk2 although i didnt like the mk2 as much, didnt seem as comfortable and well put together somehow, it was a 2.0 and i was disappointed with the power and economy compared to my mk1 2.0. Maybe the opinions are a matter of the age of the person too.... I had a conversation with a friend last year that actually made me think. Me and another friend were going to a classic car show, in his 1992 W124 200D. Just as visitors of course, parking outside. There we met a bunch of guys from our town that is about 10 years younger than me, and they asked me why we didn't go in my W123 instead. As they said "they probably would have let you attend the show with that car". First, I thought that they were ridiculous or just trying to be funny, I mean, attending a classic car show with a W123? But during a conversation with another friend about that thing, I started to understand them better. He told me that they are 10 years younger than us. When we were kids, and old enough to start getting interersted in cars, and noticing what we saw on the roads, there was tons of W123s on the roads, we saw them everywhere, and they weren't really old by then either, the last examples were still actually too new and expensive to buy for mr. Average in Sweden. Things were different when these kids were growing up, W123s was out of production since many years, they were starting to get thin on the grounds, and the new cars from that era looked very different to the W123. For them, the difference between a W123 and for example a 1957 Chevy aren't as huge as it is in our eyes. And by now, they are starting to get their first cars, and in 10 years, they will look at what they drove in the early 2010s with nostalgia, and may even think that the Mk1 Mondeo is a cool, old car. Is this true? Well, even if it is very hard to believe, it probably is. And for me the Mondeo is special in the way that it is the first car I remember seeing and thinking that "this is a completely new car that I haven't seen before, because it haven't been released until now". This was in the spring of 1993, I was born in September 1986. I remember a couple more cars getting released that year, as the new Saab 900, the Citroen Xantia, the W202 Mercedes - but Mondeo was the first one I noticed. But probably I would have a hard time thinking of the Mondeo as retro in many years from now. Maybe because it is just weeks ago they started to getting thin on the ground instead of being everywhere, not cared of, with rusty arches, a cloud of blue smoke coming from the exhaust and of course, taped bumpers. No criticism of the Mondeo, but Fords are seen as typical "use and throw away" cars here, so people stop caring about them when they are older than 5 years or so...... "Not retro" are not really the same thing as "SUCKS!" though.

I have had 2 sierras and 3 mondeos, 2 mk1's and a mk2. The mk2 mondeo I was told was built with a thinner metal sheet, making it lighter but not as robust.
I found it easy to upgrade the mondeo as there were plenty of them in the scrapyards for parts. Those days are long gone, as are most of those scrapyards which supplied the parts.
Vehicles built and registered prior to 2000 were culled by Gordon Brown and his brilliant cash for clunkers scheme! And a lot of people forget this.
I couldn't find an automatic and switched to Chrysler neons which are now even thinner on the ground than the mk1 mondeo which celebrates 20 years since the first came off the production line this December.
But as previously stated, it is a matter of perspective, and where you stand in time as to when these cars first came out, and how many survive!

Vauxhall Vectra, retro or not? That and Mondeo. Two of the worst driving cars (imho) going but a wide range of good engines and parts that can be robbed for other projects. First of the bland euro box mid size hatch backs. Me personally think there carp. The Mondeo set the standard for FWD driving pleasure in family cars - they even made BMW worry about their 3 series for a few nights. I think, for good or bad, Ford raising the game with the Mondeo and Focus is the reason that even KiaHyundai Corp make decent cars now! The Vectra on the other hand .... it took Saab nearly 6 years to truly dial the Vectra-ness out of all the 9-5 range!

To me, the Mondeo was and always will be a boring heap of (re bodied Mazda) scrap, as was most fords of that era. They arrived in a dull era full stop. Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and yes I have owned one at one time in the past. There are cars from any decade which people will regard as worthless, how many cars still from the 60s and 70s still don't command a good price and are virtually forgotten about? In my mind the repmobile mondeos/vectras/boring euroboxes will all be one of these.
