PS: any opinions on the 1.0 liter Suzuki Wagon R Let rip....... I really like these, I have had no experience with them but they strike me as practical, fun cars! Also, they can look great modified when he is a bit older! Rysz. Hi Rysz, very true. I Googled some images for modified ones and they look cool. As Paul mentions below, if the seats can go down it will make it even more useful for Tom. Starting to like these more.

What engine size and what class insurance? I take it you are talking about a hard top model. What prices do they run at at the moment? Scene tax, or 4x4 guys??

As it's a first car, have a look at things like Fiat Panda, seicento, cinquecento, uno. Not what he wants, but these are cars you can get cheap, fix cheap, and once he has that 1 years NCB and experience of driving he can think abut getting a van.
The Seat Marbella/Terra is basically a pre 1986 Fiat Panda but with even less of a parts backup.

Mate had a Wagon R when they first came out - R reg. Struggled a little on motorways at speed limit but otherwise good little car. His wife and I had a look at the handbook and found on the their early versions you can fold all the seats down flat into a double bed the same as the Maxi ! I've thought about them a couple of times as you can make them into mini campers. Paul H Hi Paul Knowing you, I suspect you really did take a good look at them. Do you think one could lay an 18 year old 6'4" beanpole/whippet down in the back if you campered it?? I have been thinking about paneling the whole drivers side and small passenger rear window to make a "semi blind" panel out of it. Sure those would not be a problem to insurance???

What about a small pickup truck with a truck top on it? Easily more useful than a van Proton jumbuck, vw caddy, gmc s15 ( cheap to insure for a yank as well) Hey Luke!! If it were a small pickup he may never get to use it....... I would have pickup envy. Protons are lovely but make VERY GOOD MONEY still. VW Caddfy is hit by mad scene tax and capacity too large for insuring sensibly. Chevy..... Now that would be the right size but LHD for a not so mechanically minded kid would be just trouble.

106 1.5d I've had 2 of the car derived vans now and the insurance was sensible as it was only a car underneath but without back seats and windows. Would deffo have him look at these too. I think they are probably underrated too.

If he is tall, it might be the size of his feet that decides what car he can use. I can't drive most things with my size 13s, especially small modern cars.

Wagon R, Daihatsu Move, any other Kei-car would get my vote. Remember about insurance, as a general rule of thumb...if its not a common car to pinch, or wrap around a tree at the age of 17-20, you should get decent quotes. Even a Vauxhall Agila would mean servicing and parts would be fairly easily available.

Yo Grizz! My Dad has a 1988 Subaru Justy van. A lovely little 1.2 litre engine with loads of oomph and switchable 4WD to boot! If you could find one, or the ordinary hatchback version, I recommend it.

I've had a mk2 caddy van with a 1.6d engine in it. Nice and slow but also strong if it happens to be involved in an accident. I would make sure that he gets his own policy and also add you as a named driver as then it should be cheaper because he won't be the only one driving it. Check prices for fully comp and third party, fire and theft as sometimes it can be as little as £ 20-30 more for fully comp.
He may find it quite hard to get insurance on a van tho as insurance don't seem to want to give it out for vans as easily as they used to.
David.

How about a Seat Terra? Never seen one. What are they under the skin?? They are effectively a Mk1 Fiat Panda underneath. Engines are an 843cc or 903cc unit

Spoke to Tom briefly (as you do to teenagers it seems) last night when he came in.
All his mates have Clio's, Peugeot 106's etc but when I showed him the Suzuki Wagon R and also a Vauxhall Agila he seemed genuinely impressed and interested..... Maybe he is more his mums child than I thought, prefering something a bit different.
Insurance wuotes on his provisional license came in around £800 fully comp and £630 for TPFT
So I guess not too bad at this point.
