Steve: oooh that's a good idea!! It'll be much better than my half-*rsed attempt. Although I made little valleys in the breaks to help the glue sticking, I hope it won't be a problem. Tdk: Thanks! Hopefully I will have more pictures soon! Nothing has happened for 10 days, for the good enough reason that I just passed my metal fabricator exam! In just 8 months I've learned a huge lot about metal work, not that much in shaping thin steel though. I guess from now on it's just a matter of practice ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Also, I might put those newfound skills to use soon: I've bought a small arc/TIG welder, in the end I had an excellent opportunity so I went for it. I feel a TIG will be very well suited for welding old tin: you control how much penetration you want with the torch, and add the metal with your other hand. It means I'll have to grind off less metal, and any holes left in the weld can just be re-melted. The downside is that preparation needs to be absolutely spotlessly clean, and this will be a challenge. Another added bonus is that I'll be able to make stuff in stainless steel too! Airboxes, oil catch cans, exhausts... next week I'll go and make my friend's M5's middle silencer disappear ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Can't wait to have a little money for tinkering, and get stuck into welding up my cars ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Yesterday, at the workshop where the car was stored since April: ![](http://i.imgur.com/A4uiZlY.jpg) It was really cool to pick up the Maser in an M5 ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) What wasn't cool though was the brakes. Did you know that 4 sticking calipers take about 5 miles to completely overheat the braking system leading to a total loss of efficiency? I didn't, now I do! They suddenly went away when entering the town, almost leading me to crash into the back of said M5. The permanent braking allowed me to stop soon enough though, and we stopped and waited for the brakes to cool down again. Almost crashed into a few other things when trying to move the car when the callipers were unstuck but brake pressure still inexistant, but it went alright in the end. We did a quick oil change this morning and I was on my way! First stop on the motorway to check everything was as it should: ![](http://i.imgur.com/7JkdCqu.jpg) ![](http://i.imgur.com/4O712bo.jpg) ![](http://i.imgur.com/S2LMcri.jpg) ![](http://i.imgur.com/Jww41Fl.jpg) (don't trust that speedo, it overreads by about 20%!) Home sweet home! ![](http://i.imgur.com/NaRZ5y7.jpg) ![](http://i.imgur.com/t3WDK7X.jpg) ![](http://i.imgur.com/gsVIe4I.jpg) There it is, home in one piece indeed. I'll try and talk about all the issues we've uncovered later on (steering has a terrifying amount of play, the Y in the intake leaks air like crazy and has lost a bit of aluminium, I still need to clean the calipers, exhaust manifolds leak a lot, etc). But the car seems good overall, and I have a good basis to start from.

The E39 M5 is one of my childhood heroes, it was awesome to sit in one (especially with its driver doing skids on roundabouts!). I absolutely love the Maser nonetheless, I can't wait to sort it out and just drive everywhere with it!

Great news on the Maser.
Off topic but having driven 3 Ghibli's now and finally come to the conclusion that they just don't do it for me (no matter how much I want them to) I have now settled on getting an e39 M5 or an x300 XJR.
Any insight into the ownership experience of the M5 would be greatly appreciated. I have read every review, forum etc and driven a couple (awesome) but you can never have enough information.
Apologies for the thread hi-jack.

I've spent about an hour in the M5, and I just loved it! It's just as good wafting around town as it is breaking your neck at every gearchange, it looks brilliant, etc. It seems to be a very reliable car, its weak point being the VANOS system. My friend had issues with it, which were cleared by the simple cleaning of the solenoid valves! Brand new they'd cost about €1500, he was quite happy the cleaning worked.
The good thing is, for all VANOS-related stuff, there's a specialized shop in the US which refurbishes the parts and makes everything much cheaper to maintain.
As for the Maser, I went for a drive this morning and decided I'd take it to drive a few hundred k's this afternoon. No better test than this! The steering issue is caused by a worn-out steering column support, so it's not really a huge problem (and I might be able to fix it on the cheap).
Ambling-through-the-countryside pics tomorrow!

Thanks for the info Clement. The VANOS is the one part I'm particularly sensitive about but I think the sheer amount of positives outweighs this negative.
Now, I've just gotta find one. At least it's an easier task than finding a Ghibli.
Enjoy the afternoon drive.
Looking forward to the pics

Nice work on the Maserati, been reading this thread many times, with envy ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Must be reassuring to have the engine work done. The brake work should be fairly simple and straightforward or does it have any Maserati-specific oddities? [OT] BTW, couldn't help but notice but on the previous page on the post where you are waiting to wash the car behind the subaru, there is a sign on the storefront which says that new renaults can be bought there and there is an old Renault 5 (Supercinque) inside the place ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) [/OT] Hope to see the new plates on soon...

The baron : you won't regret it, and I'm not sure VANOS issues are that much worse than general Ghibli issues... that said, I'd have a Ghibli any day ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Masi : thanks!! If you like them go and buy one, later ones like mine won't stay cheap I'm afraid. Brakes should be out of a BMW E12 or E28, no biggie to sort out theoritically. That 5 is a GT Turbo, the coolest model of the range, I think they're restoring it but for the moment it's gathering dust. Georgeb : had no time to take pics today, will go and get some later today! So yesterday I went and drove the car for a bit. 580km ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Motorways and A-roads mainly, and man what a pleasure this car is. I always have trouble finding faults with stuff anyways, but I'm really, really grinning like an idiot driving it! It's best at going at a good pace on smooth A-roads, the torque of the engine is just intoxicating. Maybe I'll try and get a friend to shoot a video with his small wide-angle-lens hand-held camera (yes, that brand, but they have enough coverage already!).

I saw your message, and went to get pictures after running some errands. The left front caliper decided to get stuck, boil the brake fluid, and making some nice smelly smoke. Went home and forgot about the pictures ![:|](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/plain.png) The video might come but not very soon I'm afraid.

I've started redoing the brakes this afternoon, I want them to be spot on obviously. ![](http://i.imgur.com/OgcuHSO.jpg) Tadaaaa ![](http://i.imgur.com/Drr2ZQZ.jpg) ![](http://i.imgur.com/rXuq7mo.jpg) ATE 189? ![](http://i.imgur.com/0qzQHg3.jpg) Sweeeeeet ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ![](http://i.imgur.com/sfimuq3.jpg) Not sweet. I'll try to find a rebuild kit, can anyone confirm these are BMW E28 brakes?? They are 4 pots, pistons seem to be 40mm diameter.

![](http://i.imgur.com/q5XbjfB.jpg) Put the caliper and its pistons in white vinegar to bathe for a while, I'll give them a slight brush later on to help with the process. The old brake fluid: ![](http://i.imgur.com/6yArwg7.jpg) I cleaned the system with burning alcohol to prevent it from rusting from the inside out while it's in the open air, so what you see should indeed be much darker... even though I'd used this to drain the Alfa's brake fluid earlier this year and not really cleaned it, what came out of the car was ugly. I'll try and do things well so a good flush seemed in order.

Pssshhhhhhh ![](http://i.imgur.com/0R3udZj.jpg) ![](http://i.imgur.com/izzlLaG.jpg) Shiny! ![](http://i.imgur.com/hk7rEtc.jpg) Not shiny. ![](http://i.imgur.com/TBzkYfP.jpg) The goal is to find 40mm-piston ATE caliper rebuild kits and put the car back together tomorrow. Not sure it'll happen though, the vinegar isn't doing anything to the second caliper because it's full of grease and muck. I'll buy some more and degrease it thoroughly, the process takes a lot of time (as does cleaning everything with the Dremel afterwards!). And then it'll be on to the rear brakes.

You don't hang about when you get going.
As always great work. That old fluid is pretty grim but only to be expected.
I moved house on Saturday and there was bi-turbo parked at the "new" neighbours all day. Didn't get a photo unfortunately but looked great in grey. Always impressed by how low and wide they look in person as it just doesn't come across in the photos.
p.s. Your advice on the M5 tipped me over the edge. Collect mine Wednesday (which is also my birthday) Completely standard in Silverstone Blue

All shiny and new seals... €146 ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) I've been an idiot, there was a kit on a French website, for €50, but I wanted to promote local motor factors. Consider me well taught. ![](http://i.imgur.com/AcCgcpD.jpg) Halfway through ![](http://i.imgur.com/KwVf6yj.jpg) All done! ![](http://i.imgur.com/uQRKnn4.jpg) They currently are baking in the oven to cure the paint, 300°C should suffice ![8D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/insane.png) Tomorrow is putting-back-together time!
