Now, Don't laugh at me.
I've never used an angle grinder before and I need to use one to speed up the removal of my ARB drop link on my Civic. Do I use a grinding disk and grind through the bolt, or do I use a cutting disc and try and get behind the bolt?
I've literally no idea what I'm doing!

I suggest both!
Pick up a few 1.5mm cutoff discs as you will probably break a few being your first time and all. Cut through the bolt close to the base and then swap to a heavier disc and get the rest from the top.
You could do the whole job with a grinding disc but it will take more time.

Cut off disc, let the tool do the work (don't push on hard), keep the disc inline, if you try and force it over it will shatter and when they go its spectacular.
Don't take the guard off, I have no idea why people do as it affords only a little more access
Don't cut all the way through anything under tension as the two separated parts will slam tight onto the disc and cause it to shatter
I never bother with grinding discs, I'm a fan of a flap disc instead

don't forget safety goggles, its not worth the risk. gloves are a good idea to.
if you have never used one before have a go on some scrap first. grinders have a nasty habit of kicking back and it always catches you out. disc can shatter (hence gloves n goggles) so don't push them too hard. let the grinder do the work.

agree with all the above, in addition, prepare your work area. Make yourself as much room as you can and check your access before you start cutting. If it snatches and your hands are at a funny angle, you could well drop it... If it's awkward go VERY carefully!

Can you not just undo the bolt holding the ARB on?

be aware the sparks will ruin paint and glass , so cover anything up thats important ...and be mindfull if youre shooting sparks at the fuel tank or anything that can burn

Just remeber cutting discs and grinding are different and you need to use the right one for the job .

Can you not just undo the bolt holding the ARB on? I tried that with the passenger side, but I've been left with no skin on my knuckles as the allen bolt wouldn't hold the allen socket, so resorted to a hacksaw. I've just ordered a better quality socket from Halfords, and some mole grips. I'm going to try and get at the 5mm bolt with the socket, if it doesn't work, I'll attack the arb link from the back with mole grips. It took me about 4 hours though for the passenger side one.

Please watch this also , ive watched it and he covers everything . Very informative. Cheers! I think I may stick with the manual approach. Don't fancy slitting my wrists, and where I have to work is on a lane where people walk their dogs.

Another hot tip (geddit?) don't use one whilst wearing a fleece type jumper or top. The sparks go through it like it isn't there and it stings.

Angle grinders definitely work at removing stuck fasteners and the likes but I only use mine as a last resort when I've been unable to remove by less aggressive methods Good safety advice already given just remember to protect any glass nearby as the sparks and bits of hot metal will ruin glass very quickly.

And don't use it with the trigger in the locked position, if you do and the blade snatches causing you to let go it can cause a lot of damage to you and anything nearby before it hits the deck.

Don't take the guard off, I have no idea why people do as it affords only a little more access Agreed, should have seen the scar my roofer had from using a 9" angle grinder with no guard. Ran from his wrist to his shoulder, missing every main artery & cutting his bicep muscle in half all the way along. Apparently his picture is in the saftey guide for Mikita (or some other manufacuer)

If they were under tension then they would separate when cut through, not come together and trap the disc. Cutting things under tension is perfectly safe, unless of course one of the parts under tension is holding something else up that can fall.

Got it off in the end. Bottom nut I could hacksaw through, top one I destroyed the ball socket, and latched a set of mole grips to the ball joint. Plenty of penetrative fluid and a massive 14mm spanner and we're off. This side took an hour.
I might look into an angle grinder in the future.
Cheers guys!
