As has already been said on here it's down to the owner or prospective owner to do what they want regardless of what's said by the 'experts' or whoever else decides they need to tell people what to do!
If I had the money at the time I would have purchased a Dolmite Sprint as I've always wanted one but then I saw a lovely looking Toledo for a fraction of a fraction of a Sprint and went for it... I love it even though it's slower and has less 'jewellery' on it but it still appeals to me in its own way.
I think it's the love for a car that makes us decide whether or not we want to restore it. I would not hesitate to restore my Toledo as it means a lot to me for other reasons but if I'd have had a Sprint that caused me grief I'd NOT want to restore that...!!!!
I don't know what the real answer is though... You do whatever you want to do as long as it makes you happy at the end of it all... In this game it's all about being selfish, you have to live with the end result after all!!!!!!!

Can't stand people that would use a beautiful car from years gone to make money. Nothing wrong in my eyes if seeing it as an investment in the long run, but not to make a quick buck...
Totally understandable to not want to buy a car that loses thousands just from driving it out the showroom though

You cannot take any of this seriously, in the same '100 money saving ideas' article, they also said, live at the top of a hill, so you can free wheel for the first part of your journey & another was charge your mates for travelling in your classic, so it goes towards the up keep. Now when you put the the 'don't buy base models' in there it's all a little trivial

I don't see restoring cars as making money (If you do, you're most likely doing it wrong or as a business), surely it should be because you enjoy the process, enjoy the finished project and also know that you did it yourself and you are proud of it no matter what spec or car it is.

The best original condition car I have ever seen was at Prestatyn car show in 2010 and it has stuck in my memory since I saw it. Yep a bog standard Maestro! lol

Have a long standing affection for Maestros and Montegos, seriously underated cars, at the time they where ahead of the pack too, my father had a Montego estate 1.6L from new, first car I drove after getting my provisional licence C544 HCX in Austin beige. Thanks for sharing that pick

Back in the early 90s in the essex area there was an old fella who had a lovely mint condition lancia beta hatchback five door model it was a basic model but truly mint, wonder if that cars still about?? Last saw it at great leys show in chelmsford

Thanks for sharing that pick I must admit, for some strange reason I like them, but my brother had an MG Metro, then the first of the 1600 MG Maestro's, both were sub standard but the Maestro particularly was really really bad . The build quality was truly appalling, the interior wasn't held in with anything & every time you drove it something fell off.

Yes I remember on my Fathers estate everytime you shut the rear door all the trim dropped off, this happened from new.

Have to say that my Step Mother had a low mileage Maestro 1.6HLS that was given to my step brother (was offered to me but I politely declined). The thing was awful, bits fell off, failed to start on occasions and rust was a big problem. Used to misfire at random and the amount of times I had to retrieve/fix the car was unreal. All this in a 40k example that was serviced on the dot, good job my old Ford Orion ( over 100k and the same age) was reliable so that I was able to get to him!. He eventually blew the headgasket on it, but he didn't learn his lesson, he eyed up an XR3i but it was past it's best - at this time I had my XR3i ( the one in my profile) so he went with another maestro ( 5 years newer ) and yes, again me and my old Ford were required to retrieve step brother.

A lad I used to work with (1999/2004) had a beige maestro the same as that, used to car share with him, It was however Not in that condition, in fact I don't know how it had a m.o.t as it was rotten as a pear.
I have a base spec mk1 escort that I'm restoring, It's the lowest spec possible apart from chrome trim around the windows (which I'll not be putting back on) it doesn't even have a hazard warning switch, fag lighter, carpet etc etc and although I intend on putting a bigger crossflow in it I will be keeping the full standard interior and looks apart from rs wings. I'll not be making a rs/mex or rally car rep.

Top line models make top line money. In Marina-land a TC Coupe will usually raise the most cash for a passenger car. Lower trim level cars get 'upgrades' to TC trim to increase their value.
Perversely the base Pickups and Vans make even more than TCs.
What do I have? A modded Super Delux Coupe and a nearly standard Pickup. I could sell the Pickup tomorrow, but it would take some time to sell the SDL Coupe against its equivalent TC version.
Go figure.

I think the Maestro had something like 16k on the clocks from new and the owner bought it off some old dear and spent a lot to get it to that level. I've found quality whatever the trim level, demands respect!

I think they have just said that purely to create a storm. Base model VW beetles are far better than the other models. A base model saab 900 comes without a sunroof which is about as rare as they come - and I would much rather have wind up windows! I have a base model e30 316 without fuel injection and with steel wheels - Far prettier and far less to go wrong. I think that magazine is talking out of it's ar$e - it's attempts to get a younger crowd a few years back were laughable and painful - and quite a turnover of staff which never helps.
Any publicity is good publicity which any magazine really needs these days.
