I'm currently looking for a lathe myself - a Colchester Student, and yours looks mint in comparison to most advertised!

Ours is a Master mk1. Not so many available here in NZ and colchesters seem to demand good money. If I was buying one in the UK, with the seemingly much larger selection to choose from I'd want to find a mk2 with hardened carrage ways plus the quick release tailstock. Undoing the large nut that clamps the tailstock gets pretty boring when your used to later lathes with a simple lever.
My uncle has offered us his very nice well looked after Taiwanese lathe which will be less worn, quieter, hardened surfaces, all metric and much more usable for complex machining so we're gonna go check it out.

the Chinese and especially the Taiwanese machines are pretty good now. So long as you set them up/clean out the swarf from the gearbox....

Not sure this is true any more but went to a tool and machinery exhibition at the NEC in the 90s and was told lathes weren't designed to last that long any more because technology moves that fast the lathe would be obsolete after five years,not much use to us hobbies ts.

Happy update time.. it runs! After chasing around electrical gremlins which ended up in a instrument cluster swap among other things I finished yesterdays efforts by filling the carb with fuel, pulling the choke out and turning the key. Two seconds later and it fired up easily. I'll get a video later. Couldnt run it for long as Id not filled it with coolant yet. I'm so happy. I'll be happier when Ive taken it for a drive and confirmed it has not got any issues like BHG etc. So going back a few days here's some things that have been finished.. First off. I finished the wiring and mounted the solenoid, tucked out of the way under the servo.. Then I thought I'd better fit the speedo cable. But it didn't turn. It was seized solid in one spot. I tried so many things to free it up, lots of wd40, plusgas, twisting, wiggling, pulling, pushing etc and finally it freed up but only one half... Luckily I had a spare cable from when Viva one was swapped over from cable speedo to my home made electronic setup. But it was really long, made to suit the Mazda rx7 gearbox and how do I shorten the inner down? I tried years ago to grind a new square end and it doesn't work. So I looked it up and the square end is actually squeezed into shape! I made a little form tool from some steel and at 5mm a time I squeezed my new cut down inner into shape... It worked a treat!.. The sparkplug leads that came with the car are horrible old red Repco branded items. Not a chance they will get fitted... I priced up leads in NZ and the prices were stupidly high, even at trade. Plus most are coloured blue or red. So Ebay Uk and the nice people at.. stores.ebay.co.uk/The-Green-Spark-Plug-Co?_trksid=p2047675.l2563.. had just what I needed. 7 days later and I had a nice new set of good quality black leads for only 15 squid inc postage!!! Yesterday was finishing little things and sorting out why instruments didnt work. I found a defective circuit strip thing plus a broken plastic casing on the cluster so I swapped the parts across from a spare.. While I did that Hannah did some other jobs.. like clean the mucky sunvisors.. That is it really.. I'm hoping to do a bit more today and then take it for a drive to check it out. Very excited. It currently sits here waiting..

Oh yeah forgot that. Sweet. Yeah I'll turn the kettle off for now. Let me know when to flick it back on. Fitting out the interior this evening. Hannah has cleaned the seats and they came up great. Now contemplating just having rear seats only and simply extending the pedals and steering wheel back.. so comfy in there being able to stretch out. Kevin agrees...

I was so happy that the little formers worked. Plus I made them with a hacksaw and file. I'd have milled them out with the little mill we were going to buy from my uncle. However thanks to mother nature having a strop, throwing her toys from the cot and stamped her feet causing that large earthquake two weeks ago, the road we had planned to take has lifted by up to 2 metres (the sea bed has lifted 11 metres along the coast in places !!!
But what this means is that anyone needing to shorten or make a new speedo cable can do so easily. I love the way forums share tips and we all learn, often by others mistakes :-)
Oh and I removed the pressed on outer cable stops by heating up with a plumbers gas torch. Just enough to soften the plastic on the outer cable. I then made the pressed hexagon round again by smacking successively larger tapered punches through until it was large enough to be a nice tight fit placed back onto the outer where I needed it.
