Jaguar XJ6 Series3 coil spring chop , how much to cut off?

Hi, I want to lower my series3 jag,  it's virtually impossible to find suppliers of springs/ lowering kits for it,  I'm thinking of chopping the springs, I want it Nice and Low,  has anyone done it to this model? How much should I cut from the springs?

Hi ! No pics as of yet but il take a couple 4u, I've had it a year now it's in my garage I'm slowly tidying it up, any pics of yours? Any mods?
Coilsprings.co.uk can make a set up for our jags at a cost of around £250 but I had to measure the car myself and tell them what height to go down to which is ok but a little risky if I get it wrong.

i noticed your own post u mentioned gaz doing a rear coil over set did u get a price? That sounds interesting..

I did get a price but I've forgotten what it was, i don't think they were that much, just ping them an email they were quite quick to get back.

I take it you've seen my Jag now then I know what you mean about getting some made then not being happy with the height, tricky one.

Where abouts you based buddy?

Yeah it's alota responsibility on yor shoulders if your not happy with the height wen they've been made!
I will give Gaz a shout, wonder if we could get the rear gaz coil over system and then just the front springs made at coil over.co.uk,
Did u get an idea how low the Gaz coil overs would adjust too? Enuf to Slam it?

Yeah yors is looks Nice ! mine looks pretty much the same but in beige and it's got the chrome wheel trims il stil get a pic sorted tho,

It's not easy at all getting modded parts for the series3 is it !!?

with the car on the floor climb under and measure the distance between each coil , that will tell you how far down each coil will take you,.

Pretty much.... Although with the weight of the car on fewer coils, each coil will be compressed a little more than before, but it will be negligible. Surely somewhere on the huge web there's a company that makes the right springs?

I didn't search for springs for a specific car when I bought some, just took measurements of what I needed then googled it. Usually just the inside diameter, length uncompressed, and the weight load one spring takes

Yeah I've searched everywhere, Arden do a coil over kit for crazy money, nobody else does a coil over kit from what I can find and the only lowering springs out they're are 35mm

If you're prepared to put a little work in then look on the rallydesigns website... They sell threaded sleeves, with springs cups. You get the right ID ones to suit the OD of your shock / strut.

Then, in the case of the strut, cut the original spring cups off, and (for strut or shock) weld on the new sleeves. Then just buy springs to suit...... That's what I've done, look on my build thread "1975 hillman hunter"

I've got height adjustable suspension for under £80 I also put damping adjustable shocks in too, but that's not necessary

the jag set up isnt quite as simple as that, front has spring seperate from shock.

id highly recomend not cutting springs, every car ive been in with cut springs rides like dogs**t its just not worth it.

look on the jag forums, front has some sort of washer/spacer system where you can swap them round to drop it down. Because i don't want to lower mine although i read it i didnt fully retain the info!!
rear end is used by a billion hotrods, there will be an off the shelf solution somewhere that isn't crazy money. maybe ask over on rods'n'sods as there will be ample people that use the set up.

please don't chop the springs.

My mk6 fiestas rear suspension had separate springs from the shocks, but putting covers in, you just remove the spring completely and put the coilover where the shock was.....

Can that not be done? I've never really looked at jag suspension before

This is not really a good or safe idea, the shock mounts are never meant to carry the weight of the car. You can damage, bent or completely rip out the upper or lower mounting points. On a light fiesta you might get away with it (although I still wouldn't do it!) but on a heavy old jag I wouldn't dare.

Right, I've just been speaking to Gaz and S and G Barrett,
I can get that rear height adjustable system but it's just Height adjustable shockers,
if I usethese with my original rear springs will the shockers still lower the jag or would I have to replace the coils too? I asked them that question they said I wouldn't change the coil springs but they didn't sound too sure, I don't see how keeping the original coils will lower the car or am I wrong ?
If they are right that means I can keep the old springs fitted, replace the shockers to adjustable Gaz shockers and wind the back end down?

Don't take my word for it but generally the coils determine the height of the setup, the shocks just help the springs to absorb sudden bumps (or shocks )

Actually, each coil will still be compressed exactly the same.
