...Please note, this is all hypothetical... So, 'if' you had to drive to Aberdeen twice a weeks and wanted to do it in a vehicle that is able to do the journey without filling up what would you choose? Something that can happily sit at 80mph, is big and comfy and can cover the mileage without throwing a fit and costing a fortune to maintane. Something German, Audi, Merc? Quite fancy an A8 but the only Audi experience I have is with a bonkers RS2 and that was wallet drawing experience. So, let's play the best game on the internet, spending somebody elses money on some retro tat. If i could I would love to be able to fly but that is not an option. Let the spending begin! P.

Used to do a lot of mileage in my 850's 'back in the day' most comfortable car ever so would consider a 240.
Key consideration is to be able to do it on one tank, managed that in my wifes Galaxy several times now but, as it is a contract car, can't continue to rack the big miles up on it.
Plus I am bored with driving it....

How far is it? I'd recommend a Jag XJ40 or X300 as they just eat miles and parts are likely cheaper than german rivals, my 4 litre will do around 30mpg with the cruise set at just over 70mph. A 3.2 might get a bit further on a tank but I'm pretty sure the 4 litre would do at least around 400 miles in one go easily

just driven mine to italy and back, sling it on cruise control no worries, averaged 60mpg pver 2000miles including a couple of hefty traffic jams and a drive over the grand st bernard pass.

Ah. Jag will be no good in that case I fear Dependent on budget, I'd be tempted to try a cheap Phaeton probably not the V10 TDi though

BMW E32 735i or 740i would be my choice! My 735i was doing 30mpg at a steady 70mpg

I've been looking at VW Phaetons for a while now. You can get them with the same 3.0 engine for similar money to an equivalent A8, but they're rather heavier and higher specced. Great for doing mega-miles

Jaguar S Type diesel maybe.
I was blatting up and down to Dublin (from Belfast) 4-5 times a week for work a few years ago and had an Audi A6 3.0V6 TDi Quattro. Comfy, powerful and decent MPG on the run. A non Quattro would probably be better on juice.

Great for doing mega-miles Just done a quick Autotrader search and the Phaeton is considerably cheaper than the equivalent Audi. And then I saw the W12..... Might as well buy a c63 AMG Wagon at this rate! P.

Imo mileage of that magnitude probably means servicing alot.closely followed by tyres and electrical guff needing work or replaced...oldish barges of 5years could be a miserable money pit .potentially a car of simplicity and common consumables would be a good bet like a 1990-2000s japanese car which would consume probably just tyres and exhausts and become a sort of trusty but boring old dog

BMW 320d, E46, 55mpg without trying and nice and comfy
I ran one for 2 yrs up and down M6,M40, 900 mile round trip every couple of weeks. Did toast an expensive Turbo but otherwise, no issues. Got rid when 150k miles came up, was needing some suspension by then but engine was as strong as ever and still doing 55/60mpg

Look how many 320d's are for sale as spares repairs with broken engines. Any other E46, yes as they are a great car to drive & very refined but the 2.0d is horrible unreliable torque-less mistake of an engine. (I had one & was constantly waiting for it to explode and it was only 4 years old lol, sold it after 10 months)

I did 2500km last week when I was back in Ireland in a new A6 tdi and it was a frankly staggering mile muncher. (The Europ car desk agent up sold me...)
2.0 tdi, FWD, Auto, Leather. 1300km per tank!!!!!!
Loads of torque, effortless.
I think the 8 speed gearbox may have been the star through. Seamless!!!
Also note that I am not a "new" car fan. The newest car I ever bought was 1995. Also I worked for Lexus in 07/08 and used to traverse the country in GS300's and IS250's but the Audi was way ahead of either of those.
