Theoretically speaking - shoveling a V12 into a Landrover is insane so 148mph should theoretically speaking pretty sane for the insane ! (This was just a comment - and No kittens or Nuns were killed in the making of such comment)

Is the 148mph theoretical for tarmac or mud ?? Both I guess, it's based on gear ratio calculations. It'll never see the mud again. Tarmac only with this suspension height.

I'm sure a bit of 148mph green-laning would be rather quite eye-popping to say the very least...!!!

Barely looked at it since last post due to the arrival of my first born! Luckily today I managed to escape the endless nappy changing, feeding and bouncing to pick up this... It's a defender 110 Salisbury rear axle. It's supposedly a straightforward diff swap but we'll see. Also got some replacement HT leads, 8mm jobs. Hopefully clean the running up a bit.

Just realised what the axle is for, ignore my message about modifying it!
Just caught up with the progress, this really is fantastic.

Luckily my little man sleeps pretty much 95% of the time at the moment.

Congratulations! Early precedent is a good idea if you can really get away with it. 95% sleep regime does not sound familiar in the slightest, you lucky lucky bar-staff!

Slipped out for an hour this afternoon. First job swap the leads out... Nice 8mm jobs. Definitely needed as I think these ones might well be older than me... Onto the diff swap. Cleaned the defender casing up a bit then removed the cover plate. Closer inspection shows very little wear and no teeth damage. Then just enough time to pull the half shafts out and again no damage. They match the current ones which is a bonus as I wasn't sure they would.

You need a case spreader to get the diff out of the Sailsbury cases. Nice job so far.

could you elaborate on case spreader ? is it to widen the 'ole by stretching the metal (not so much that it permenantly deforms of course) so that diff+bearing will actually fit through ?
if yes to the above is it only the stress of the diff housing which pre-loads the bearings, or is there castellated adjustment ?

don't need a diff spreader. a huge G Clamp at 90degrees to where the spreader would sit and squeeze the casing. it does exactly the same job as the spreader would do by distorting the case enough to get the diff in and out with a small amount of preload when released.
