Amazing, haven't seen a street ka in years, yet parking in Tesco this morning saw one same as yours leaving! Isn't that always the case though? Our eyes see so much every day that the things that don't need processing just drop straight through the memory sieve. This car has had some 'brain time' in the last couple of days, due to this thread, so you've seen the car in Tesco's and remembered it, rather than just subconsciously dismissing it. Then again, I might be talking tosh....

This car has had some 'brain time' in the last couple of days, due to this thread, so you've seen the car in Tesco's and remembered it, rather than just subconsciously dismissing it. Then again, I might be talking tosh.... I know what you mean (same thing happened when I bought my Dualis/Qashqai), but sometimes it's just weird. For instance, I was talking to my boss about cars and he said he had a red Holden Camira wagon back in the 80's. Now camira's were curse word from the get-go, with many mid-late 80's models having rust (unusual for a 4 year old car, as we don't salt the roads) in the early 90's and have all but disappeared from the roads. What do I see a couple of days later? A red Camira wagon... Same thing happened a few weeks ago. When Mitsubishi were producing cars in Australia, Magna's were a dime a dozen. The first generation (post Sigma/Colt) were common as anything but being a curse word car that fell to pieces (hence Mitsubishi no longer making cars in Australia), I hadn't seen a TF magna in years. Lo and behold, I saw one and thought "I haven't seen one on the road in years", then on my drive home, saw a different one..

I'd not seen an mn12 thunderbird before this thread, and after reading it yesterday spotted one on a forecourt in a fetching metallic gold / beige in Chester this very evening, screen price of £1995. Sadly thats too much, they are a beautiful car, and worth every penny of that, but i've never seen one sell for that amount of money. I bought this, MOTd and ready to go for just £800... And about a year later i bought this for just £400, MOTd and ready to go... I sold them both in the end, and i could only get £400 for each one, and they both had long MOTs. People don't want them, Mustangs of the same age go for much much more, and i can honestly say that in every way the Thunderbird is a better car than the Mustang... I love them, they are my achilles heal, well, one of them anyway. I wish someone from here would save this, that i have found on ebay. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-THUNDERBIRD-3-8-v6-auto-spares-salvage-repair-MUSTANG-BANGER-/221810369344?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item33a4eda340 it sits there taunting me lol but for just £250 which is what it'll probably end up going for, that must be the cheapest way into American car ownership ever, and like i said, they are loverly!! Amazing, haven't seen a street ka in years, yet parking in Tesco this morning saw one same as yours leaving! That could've even been me lol! I can honestly say, despite all evidence from others, that I haven't seen a Ka of any sort for the last two years You can't hide away from civilisation in a remote corner of the world and make those kind of statements... This is CHEATING Now then, if any of you are following my other thread of mindless babble from a crazy man on Retro Rides:- retrorides.proboards.com/thread/175105/1985-talbot-alpine?page=3 you will know that i have recently re-discovered the art of just going out driving for fun, for recreation. I was sat at home one evening thinking that all my friends who are bikers go out riding. They're not going anywhere in particular, they just hop on their bikes and head on out on the open road, for no other reason than a recreational ride. We (or atleast I), as car drivers don't do this. As a rule if we get into the car we're going somewhere, there's a purpose, we're off to work, the shops, meet family or friends, go to the cinema, so on and so fourth. We don't just jump into the car for recreation, just for a drive around, just for fun! Why is this? Why don't we just go for a drive, I even consider myself to be a 'Driver', no, i'm not the Stig, or even the Stigs bald fat cousin, but if I were to blow my own trumpet I would consider myself to be an above average competant amateur. I don't even look at cars as a tool that gets you from A to B like most people do, however it would appear that this is how i use them! I like driving my cars, it's fun, but they sit forlornly out on the street with several of my other cars waiting for me to need to go to work, the shops, take the Pistonpoppets to school etc... I've really got to get out more! So last night, spurred on by what Geordie said, Ref simply driving for pleasure, on a sunny evening after work I've known me often take 45 minutes to move 5 yards forward into the garage in the Boxster. Strangely, it'll select reverse almost by itself and take me on a jaunty blast round the coast to Saltburn or over the moors. Naughty, naughty Boxster I thought to myself, Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey! (Hold on, i'm not the Fonz!) I've got a little convertible i could be taking out on a bit of a run! I know that it's not a very sharp, well composed, or even good picture, but it's atmospheric, it's arty!! Stay with me... Please lol. So, where to go? Well i thought that i just fancied some fish and chips, so i headed off to Coastgaurd Cafe on the Sea Front at Hayling Island. There are nearer chip shops to me, but the tucker here is gorgeous, and i was going out for a drive remember? I thought that i would take the scenic route and headed off down the M3 toward the M27. I know, i know, thats not the most scenic route i could've chosen! I thought that i would take in a bit of the New Forest on the way, and as you can see by the map, the New Forest is not the most direct route i could've taken to Hayling Island! I thought that i would have a look at the beach at Lepe... Very nice, i think i'll go there again, and i thought that while i was there, i might as well try and take a couple of nice photos of the the Street Ka named desire before i sell it on to someone else, stand by for pretty pictures of it... My personal favourite is the third photo... Then it was back on the road for a 60 odd mile drive to the chippy! Driving through the New Forest was really cool and it would appear that nearly everyone who had an open toppped car was out in the New Forest cruising in it, i saw various different cars ranging from an Austin Healey 3000, to a TR7, and even a Smart Crossblade! Is it just me, or is that one of the maddest looking cars ever? Another atmospheric shot cruising through the New Forest! If i lived in California no doubt i would have been cruising along the Pacific Coast Highway, unfortuantely i don't, however i did the best i could and cruised along the M27 instead! By the time i reached the Chip shop on Hayling Island it had got pretty dark, but i still managed a small Cod and Chips, and sat on the wall watching what remained of the sunlight as it faded through the orangey-red part of the spectrum until it was just replaced by the inky blackness of night. By then, stuffed full of the gorgeous Fish and Chips it was time to head for home. Hayling Island, as i'm sure you've gathered is an Island which is accessed by a bridge. I have been going there since i was a child as i live within about an hours drive of it. My earliest memories of going there was when i was about five years old, sitting in the back of my Mums green Consul Classic on those hot sticky vinyl seats, with the warm wind blowing through my hair as we crossed the bridge. I've always thought that i might be able to take a nice photo of a car on that bridge when it was dark as the street lights illuminate it very well, so, as it was getting late, and nothing was about i thoght i'd have a look at it. Stand by for more photos... Well, i'm not sure they've turned out as good as they look in my minds eye, but atleast i had a go. Then, with the roof still down i headed for home. I went the back roads way, and it was pretty good as the roads were pretty much empty, so i had them to myself. All in all it was a pretty damn cool way to spend an evening, and didn't even cost much in fuel, or chips for that matter! I'm gonna miss this little thing when it's gone, but go it must!

I can honestly say, despite all evidence from others, that I haven't seen a Ka of any sort for the last two years You can't hide away from civilisation in a remote corner of the world and make those kind of statements... This is CHEATING The mighty Philippines 'away from civilisation", "remote"? How dare you, Sir! I'll have you know we're quite close to Papua New Guinea and many other like places. Hmm, maybe not the most compelling argument I've ever used Now then, if any of you are following my other thread of mindless babble from a crazy man on Retro Rides:- retrorides.proboards.com/thread/175105/1985-talbot-alpine?page=3 you will know that i have recently re-discovered the art of just going out driving for fun, for recreation. (Hold on, i'm not the Fonz!) I've got a little convertible i could be taking out on a bit of a run! Like you, I've recently rediscovered this pleasure. I never bothered in Malaysia because a) the drivers are bloody awful and take the all fun out of the job and b) you see one palm oil plantation, you've seen 'em all. A couple of 4x4 runs into the jungle with some mates, and the odd road-trip into Thailand, but that was about all.
But here, we're a bit more varied in scenery with deserted coasts and mountains in easy reach. Also lots of history around that I'd like to get out of Manila and see. It's probably also a rebellion against the nightmare Manila traffic during the week and it's such a change to be able to get out of it all come an early weekend morning. So yes, I'll be doing more of this as well and have decided that at least a couple of weekends a month, when the family is in Tondo, I'll get out and about, even to the extent of heading out on a Saturday, kipping overnight somewhere and returning on a Sunday.
Like you, no reason, I'm just going to enjoy it!

I used to go to Hayling Island as a child, back in the 60's so would probably have been in a Triumph Herald or 1300TC. Went fishing off the bridge and only caught some crabs. Do you take the short cut that comes out by the old station?
It's all changed now we used to meet up as a large extended family in the dunes but most of that and the sand on the beach seems to have gone now. Is the chip shop at the fun fair end?
Mark

When you do George make sure you take plenty of photos. I must say i've been quite enjoying your Letter from Manila thread! Is the chip shop at the fun fair end? There is one at that end actually in the Fun Fair, and i think they're probably owned and run by the same people, but the one i go to is down at the other end, i'm more of a sit on the beach watching the sun go down while i'm stuffing my face full of chips kinda guy. Well, unless i'm with the kids, then i get no choice, i have to go to the fair lol! I always think they look the same going backwards as forwards if you know what I mean I know exactly what you mean fella, and the problem is made much worse when the roof is up lol! I'm just glad i don't have the optional hard top, that would have made it look worse still! Because there goes # 5 DAMMIT!! But before i get into telling you about my month with the little Street Ka, i just need to get this out of the way first, please bear with me... so i went over to her to ask her if she was photographing her car in order to sell it. Yes she said. So i enquired as to how much she would like for it, and how much MOT was on it, It was MOTd yesterday she said, and she was looking for just £650! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! FINALLY, i've made a profit!! I realise that buying a car for £650 and selling it for £670 isn't the biggest profit in the world, and i know that i'm over looking the fact the ebay charged me £10 to list the thing as an auction style listing, and then £20 final value fees, which actually means that i infact made a loss of £10, but FUNK ME, that was close, that is the closest i've come to making my money back in this little project all year!! Besides just £10 for all the fun i've had blasting about in this little beauty with the roof down all month, that's a bargain. After the Jag i was starting to get quite concerned even to the point that i sold one of my motorbikes so i could continue playing, so i'm counting this as a win, infact i'm even gonna celebrate with a nice cup of tea and a Tunnocks Caramel! I decided to really push the boat out and have two, because when i took the first one out, the second one looked all lonely left in the pack on it's own... It was for the best, believe me, besides it's all the fault of garthalgar, and the sponsorship stickers he's stuck on his Carlton!! Now then, what can i tell you about my month of Street Ka ownership, well, first of all it's the first car i've bought this year that isn't an estate car, therefore bringing the year of the wagon to an end, before 2015 actually became that! Apart from that, for the most part it was fantastico!! But of course there were a few nagative points of owning a Street Ka. Firstly, for me, i prefer the face of the original Ka. I presume however that all Street Ka's had the facelifted, um, face? I just think the original one looks a bit cuter!! Strewth, i'm such a girl, my month of Street Ka ownership has made me into a right Pansy lol. I realise that the original face is still under that big bumper, and it wouldn't be too much trouble to change it, but then would it work with the back bumper? I dunno, perhaps the best thing to do would be locate a rust free one of each, one for driving while the sun shines, and one for driving when it's raining. I mean they're quite small, i could probably get both into a parking space if i tried really hard! While i'm talking about the looks of the thing i must say that no matter which face is prettier, I think the First generation Ka's (1996–2008) are still alot better looking in my opinion than the Ka's that have come along since. The current crop seem to have lost their quirkyness, their identity, and their fun car vibe, a bit link the original Twingo is a lot more interesting than the model that followed it. Secondly, only two seats, so not very practical for anyone who has a wife and two children to ferry about, although, having other cars to blast about in sure does help, but there have been a couple of times when the Pistonpoppetts have insisted i pick them up in the Ka, which meant picking one of them up and dropping them off home, then going back for the other one, before going home again, turning the three mile round trip into a six mile round trip. Actually, thinking about it, that's nothing to complain about, it just meant that i got more seat time to blast about in it! Lastly, i thought that this, being a little bit impractical might suppress my desires for another car that sits in the back of my mind as it would also be an impractical two seater convertible. But it hasn't, if anything it's kinda made matters worse, because now instead of thinking, that would be ridiculous, it's not practical at all, I think, yeah, why don't i have one, i made it work with the little Street Ka, why wouldn't it work with that? Why wouldn't it work with that? After the Street Ka i can't think of a reason that i couldn't make it work with a Eleventh generation (2002–2005) Thunderbird as well... Niether for that matter can Mrs Pistonpopper! This, i will admit is not the biggest list of 'cons' in the world is it? But thats all i could think of, and i had to really try hard to think of them. I've really enjoyed this little beauty! Moving on to the 'pros' list, well, literally EVERYTHING else about owning it was awesome!! In my oh too short ownership of this little gem i took the odometer from 118,508 to 119,172 miles which means i covered about 809 fun filled miles! In these fun filled miles the Ka managed to drink 20.55 UK Gallons of go-go juice which means i was getting approximately 39.36 (S)miles per gallon from Ford's open top little funster! I must admit i was surprised at this as i thought i would've got a bit more, but, when you drive it, it does seem to egg you on, and i found that quite often i was pushing the loud pedal a little harder than i might usually do... This, as a rule is no good for high MPG figures! But it's freakin excellent for putting a huge silly grin on your face!!The 1600cc engine buzzes the little lightweight Ka along very nicely, and with about 94bhp (of course some of them horseys will have bolted as don't forget, it is 12 years old now!) i never found it wanting for power. I think that it was fast enough to get you in trouble if you pushed it really hard, but with a low-slung driving position and a low centre of gravity, and having a wheel placed exactly on each corner with no over hanging bodywork meant that it handles really, really well as its looks suggest it should. Cornering is flat, the steering is sharp and the brakes are responsive. It's a fun car to drive, it's very 'point and squirt' a bit like driving an original Mini, just not so cramped inside. This fantastic handling doesn't come at the expense of the ride either, which is supple and copes well with most road surfaces, although as mentioned earlier the front ball joints knock and clunk away over every lump and bump in the road! Because of how well the suspension is set up, and the fact that it is not a stupidly fast car I think that you'd have to be a spazzer of biblical proportions to get yourself in trouble in one of these, either that or you would have to be some sort of kamikaze pilot!! Sadly, if you were such a person, and did push it past it's cababilities i don't think you would fare well in it, i'm not sure those roll over hoops would help you much as they feel, and sound (when you tap them with something) like they are very light duty steel tubing, almost like they were made from exhaust pipe tubing. I have a feeling that they are more there for show than for safety, and i think that should you be unlucky enough to roll one over, it would not end well. Hopefully i am wrong about this, i mean why would Ford bother putting them there if they did nothing? Of course i didn't pull all the interior trim out to have a look at where the roll over hoops joined the body, or what exactly they were made from, i just hoped, probably like everyone does, that Ford had indeed made them strong enough to be safe, and not just look the part! Moving on... On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my, um scalp, warm smell from the chippy, rising up through the air, up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light, my head grew heavy and my sight grew dim, I had to stop for a bite! I'm not sure how Don Henley, Glenn Frey, or Don Felder would feel about me bastardising their lyrics from Hotel California like this, but there we go! So onto the interior... I have heard it said that the dash on the Street Ka is the thing that really lets it's interior down as it is the same as the original Ka, and is an old design dating back to the first of the Ka's which were introduced on 11 September 1996 as a small and low-cost addition to the Ford range. The functional, basic, look doesn't live up to the promise of the exterior styling. But i disagree with that, it is the same old dash, that's for sure, but it's fun a quirky design still looks interesting, and continues to suit the updated looks of the exterior bodywork. I like how it looks, it's fun, i still love that odd little oval clock with it's mis-matched hands, it's cool. The only thing is for me i'd like to have a few more gauges in the dashboard. I think this would make it feel a bit sportier, but you need to remember that this is a car that was designed and built to be cheap enough to be bought by a single girl about town, which is who it is aimed at, hence the lack of proper information provided by gauges, and instead a rather impressive bank of idiot lights! Still not to worry, the interior is not a bad place to be, the leather seats (its the LUXURY model remember, no cloth seats here, oh no!) are quite supportive, and are big enough to be comfortable even after a long drive. I would also say that there is probably a bit more room than the original tin top Ka, which also helps raise the comfort levels of a long drive as i like to stretch out a bit, i can't stand being huddled up behind the wheel! The pedals are a bit close together for my liking, and as i remermber they were too close in the original model too. Driving it in my steel toe capped work boots proved to be a bit of a game as i tended to put my foot on more than one pedal at once, however donning a pair of Converse All-Stars, and i could dance on the pedals with all the accuracy of Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers making driving the little Ka a very enjoyable experience, and quite a lot of fun! Even though this is the LUXURY Ka, the interior was pretty spartan, but then to be fair i reckon you're unlikely to spend much time looking around the cabin whilst you're driving, you'll be far to busy watching the road as you cruise along it. One thing i feel i must mention the heater, this was damn well excellent. I spent as much time as i could with the roof down, i knew i wasn't going to have this little thing long, so i wanted to experience going topless for as much time as possible. I'm talking about the car by the way, as a fat bloke i don't go topless much at all, it's not a pretty sight! So anyway, on several of my little drives i was coming home way, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay after dark, and even though it's the summer, once the big orange orb disappears it still got pretty chilly. So i would just roll up the windows, and set the heating controls to 'well done' and this was enough, even though i was still getting a bit of wind on the top of my bald head, i was still warm enough to be comfortable. It was great, and i thoroughly enjoyed every trip in this lovely little car, i pretty much enjoyed everything about driving it, i would even go as far to say that it is a drivers car. I reckon that if you like to drive for no other reason than the pleasure of driving, then male or female you could do worse than getting your hands on a little Street Ka, they're great. If i was someone like Jay Leno with acres of covered storage space for my massive car collection i would definately have space for one of these. DEFINATELY! OK, so maybe i do look more like Noddys friend Big Ears, rather than Crockett from Miami Vice when i drive it, but thats cool, i'm so glad i had this car, and i was having far too much fun to worry about how funny i looked. And yes, perhaps it is a car that is clearly aimed at girls rather than blokes, and so the hairy chested macho man feels too ridiculous to get into it and drive it, but more fool them, all you need to do is hit the road with a big grin on your face and enjoy it. Roof up, or roof down it is AWESOME! Oh, but don't forget to wear the correct sunglasses!

shame to get rid, but if you didn't we'd not get to find out what your going to buy next. Stand by... Car #6 is about to be revealed. JUNE. Citroën AX. 1.1 litre petrol. 57,696 miles. Halfway through the year, and I'm going to state first of all that, not for the first time, this is not what i was looking for! I had in mind a Citroën XM, in either flavour, hatchback, or estate as i think that they are equally beautiful, and have promised myself one since they came out in 1989! Infact, in 1989 i was so enamoured with the idea of buying one that i bought a coffee table type book all about the Citroën XM, there it is look, actually on my coffee table... But the beautiful XM still eludes me! (incidentally, if you happen to be the same type of anorak as me, and you're wondering what the ISBN is for the book so you can get yourself a copy for your bookshelf it is:- ISBN 2-85120-315-0) So, back to the plot, i hit fleabay looking for an XM, but as ever when i'm looking for something specific, there wasn't one to be found. However just 30 odd miles away there was a Citroën AX up for grabs, with very low mileage, and the guy wanted just £450 for it. I sat there procrastinating for a bit, but then i thought that i couldn't remember the last time i actually saw one on the road, and it's not gonna hurt to just go and have a look is it? Plus, i thought, 57,696 miles? That's nowhere for a car thats 22 years old. That only works out at about 2622 miles a year, no wonder it's in such good shape! Besides, it gave me a chance to give the Ka a run! Unfortuanately coming the brow of a hill, driving, shall we say in a spirited fashion there was a Policeman with a speed camera DAMMIT!! I'm still waiting for me ticket!! Moving on, i finally got to the AX and started giving it a good look over, and it's in good shape, there's no rust on it, and apart from a small dent, the bodywork is great. The interior is great too, as is the engine. So the next thing i know, i'm parting with my hard earned cash, and i am the proud owner of a Citroën AX echo... Oooh... Feel the power! Get ready to put your head in your hands! Did i mention it has Sharks teeth? Oh yeah!! First impressions, well, this isn't actually the first time i have been in an AX, about 20 years ago i had a girlfriend who drove an AX, and i remember feeling pretty un-impressed by it. Of course, at the time i was thundering about town in a pretty tidy mk1 XR4i, and i remember thinking that her little French car was somewhat curse word! But, i was younger, and even more foolish than i am now back then, and POWER WAS KING!! Times have changed, i am now older... I genuinely wish that i could say that i am wiser, but i'm really not, i'm still the same kind of idiot i was back then, except now i realise that some things i do hurt, so i don't do them! So now, looking at the AX with my older, but still no more mature eyes, the lack of power doesn't concern me, and find that i am drawn in my its rétro chic français. Climbing in i find the seats to be adequate, and surprisingly comfortable, the engine starts with the first turn of the key, and purrs quietly away like a Singer sowing machine, and I'm off! Pretty soon i'm (i wish i could say balsting along) on the M27 doing 60MPH as i don't want to thrash it, and i feel that going much faster would be! It's late on a summers evening and there's not very much traffic so i've got plenty of time to look around the cockpit, and pretty soon i realise that i don't actually need too much time to take in all the cockpit has to offer, and as far as mod-cons go... I've got NOTHING!! Well, not exactly, it came with a full tank of fuel, which probably doubled the value of the little thing!! I also have quite a nice (probably around 2001) Stereo which i can't turn on because i'm not a five year old child. I'm the same with the T.V. remote, my kids can work it, i cannot, this is why just recently i've seen Alvin and the Chipmunks so many times that i can recite the film word perfect now! The five year old has got the stereo going for me now though, and shown me how to work it! Apart from that, what do i have, well, at some point someone thought it a good idea to fit a sunroof, and thats good, and it doesn't leak either. Other frivalous things on the inside?.. Nope, that's it i think, steering wheel, dash with a speedo and a clock, pedals, oh, and keep fit windows! THAT IS RETRO!! This is basic motoring at it's finest, and oddly, being a fella who prefers his cars to be big, i kinda like it! One more look at those Sharks teeth. GRRRrrrrrrrr!! I know what you're all thinking, and you're all right, and i couldn't agree with you more... Yup... Totally!

I've never seen a set of sharkteeth so out of place on a car, like these... i think that every person on this parish knew somebody who drove an ax. My neighbours did and also my grandfather. I think your in for a pleasant surprise if you take the car for what it is. But you need a sherlock holmes hat and a pipe. Excellent find this one!

Gotta say, we're certainly on an automotive journey with this thread. Didn't see this one coming, that's for sure.

Id never have guessed that was next a very rare beast, my mrs had a pug 106 1.5 na diesel when i met her, I quite liked it (used to drive tbe door handles off it), it handled really well if the tyer pressures and tracking were spot on. Love the sharks teeth. Dan

A left field choice for sure, given you prefer larger cars/estates. Haven't seen one for years. A nice find with it being such a low mileage example.
I have a feeling that you'll get quite bored of it quickly though. The Ka was small, but had the enjoyability factor of the soft-top, whereas this one, well, doesn't look like it'll give you many 'smiles per miles' shall we say. Of course, I'll be happy to be proved wrong at the end of the month.
Fwiw, I hate there sharks teeth. I reckon it'd look way better completely standard, but then I am a curmudgeonly old b*gger.
Keep this going mate, you've got us all hooked.

Like it! I used to have an AX GTi, they are very fun cars, so light and flimsy they feel fast

I like the concept of this thread but think I've probably managed to buy a car a month this year that would be considered a retro ride compared to the likes of the 2003 Ford Ka etc...
