So I cleaned up the steering rack, checked the bushes and refilled with oil. It takes 300ml of EP90 but I had 5 litres of mtf94 so that'll do! I got the rack all bolted up then decided it was time for the frame to go in, couldn't get the angle right at all with the back of the frame hitting the rack gear box. It's a bloody good job we made a removable section on the frame so the rack can be fitted after the frame, very tight and took some wriggling but it went in. [/IMG] Then spent quite a while getting all the little bolts in that tie it into the inner arches and engine / gearbox arms Next job lower the car down and drop the motor in

oil is oil right mechanically it will be fine, only thing you might find is the MTF is a bit to good at leak finding, its about 3 times less viscous than EP90

I can always stick more in lol I thought Ep90 was 85w90 and mtf94 is 75w80 Better than the small amount of grease the was in there

well EP90 is monograde and the number is its 100celcius viscosity (so basically equivalent to the second number in the others) i had a quick look at the ambient temp viscosity (random example carlube MTF94) which was 53cst, EP90 its 128cst ! i know its all rivet counter stuff, the only reason my ears pricked up is because i looked into this for rover gearboxes a while back, not just to specifically bore you to death

So then this happened It's not got the bottom mount attached yet so the angle is a little off but it's in there, hopefully for the last time!

If it weren't so clean, that would look like it had always been in there. Let it develop a bit of ally corrosion and an oil leak or two and nobody will suspect a thing

Stop that right now. The venerable O series is *fine* and doesn't need to be jzhuzzed up with modern K series fizziness.

Managed to get the drive and hubs on last night, luckily the Allegro track rod ends fit perfectly into the mgf steering arms, the tracking doesn't even look very far out! Next job stick some front wheels on and find out where the suspension sits.

No ABS here, I'm using an OBP pedalbox - The outer CV's are mgf so have abs rings, wondering if I can use them for my speedo pickup, current plan is weld the magnet onto the inner cv and make a bracket to suit. Well after having a proper mare in the garage last night it's sitting on all 4 wheels for the first time in over 2 years. I managed to fit and torque up the downpipe (pain to get at). Fitted the gear linkage which now slips out of the Rover 200 steering uj so I'll weld it at some point (other end clamps onto the selector on the box just fine). About midnight I decided to nip back in the garage and quickly chuck the front wheels on. I just could not get the wheel to go on straight, every time I did it up one wheel nut got tight before the others. I've had the hubs and discs redrilled to 100x4 by a local engineering shop and this is the first time I've tried a wheel on that hub. Spent a long time taking nuts on and off and trying the wheel in different orientations. Doing the nuts up one turn at a time spreading the load properly, every time the one corner just got tight before the others. Not good I then decided to try the same wheel on the other side, I have had a wheel bolted on that hub before a long time ago (probably with only two nuts). Same bloody thing one side just didn't look to sit right, was starting to think the pcd must be out. Then I looked down at the pile of shiney new wheel nuts - yep one had a different taper and was slightly longer than the rest!! The pcd / wheel fitment is perfect was just the nut and poor lighting in the garage (also was tired and had about pulled the end of my finger off with the socket in the end of the drill)!! It's happily sitting on 4 trolleys now though, front shocks want lowering and need to stiffen up the rear.

First time on its own wheels in over 2 years Need to order some stiffer springs for the rear and maybe some 7" for the front, it's wound up about an inch on the Protecs as well at the moment. Need to tighten the hub nuts properly and stake them this weekend.

Those wheels are really nice size and offset, match up to the lines of the car really well. If you put MG centre caps on you could be fooled into thinking they might have come from an MG Metro (unless you're a total anorak, of course). Got to be pretty satisfying seeing it on some wheels after all that hard work.

They sure do, took me a good few days of headscratching to work out the offset I needed. The Orange set are even nicer, newly refurbed. Now what colour should I paint the gold ones?
Next major milestone will be getting it running and then painting the outside of the car. Might be a while though!
