I figure as i`ve been a long-time lurker and now a first-time poster on the great RR forum, i`d better say hello, so..... hello! Currently residing in Clacton (Essex) for the next few weeks until I transfer back north (Hartlepool area) for work, the retro fleet sadly only stands at one at the moment - a rather ratty 1977 Volvo 244 saloon (and Anniversary edition, to boot!). I had tried selling the beast recently, but got either stupid offers or timewasters, so i`m going back to my original plan - which is this:- while i`m using the car regularly, I`m going to try and collect all the bits I want/need to convert to running a T5 (and turbo) from a newer and younger Volvo but keep the rough-looking, but structurally solid, bodywork as it is. Always welcome to new suggestions and advice, and will probably end up asking a LOT of questions too. Anyway, here she is.

Thanks :-) yeah, she`s a nice one. They`re tough too, I had an 81' 244 that had covered over 400,000 miles with just regular servicing and no major disassembly. did this car come from shropshire it may have done, but I bought it from a friend in Lincolnshire back in September.

its possible, as I don`t have much history with the car.
Just had to laugh out loud as I had a phone-call not 20 minutes ago from someone who was desperately wanting to buy a 244. Told them that it wouldn`t be mine as it was already off the market

Saw this for sale on the Volvo forum. Looks like a pretty interesting machine. Glad to hear you're going to persevere with the car.

Had listed it on both sites, but had too many people arranging to view then either offering peanuts for it or not turning up at all, hence my frustration with people telling me what I could and couldn`t do with the car.
There`s actually no major rot on the car, which was the main reason I bought the car. Sure she`s a little scruffy but there`s nothing drastically bad, bodily or mechanically.
The plan at the moment is to make her able to manage the 300+mile run from my native Essex and go 'back home' to Hartlepool, where I grew up, so that means I`ll be going through all the mechanical and electrical stuff again to make sure we get there without issue as it`ll be the first big run we`ve done together.
Long-term, I am tempted to do the T5 engine conversion but on the other hand do i potentially ruin a rare edition of a common car? any thoughts, folks? Personally, i`m 60-40 in favour at the moment.

As an owner of an s60 t5, with the 2.4 engine, I think your plan is genius. Good power in that car would be great fun.

How about a Q car project? Keep it as original inside and out as possible, but do what you like to the mechanicals. mylittletony would agree I'm sure.

How about a Q car project? Keep it as original inside and out as possible, but do what you like to the mechanicals. i`m seriously liking that idea! would slightly lowered suspension ruin the Q-car look though? i`ve never owned a modified/uprated/tuned/whatever-you-wish-to-call-it car, let alone built one, but i`m really liking the T5 option now!

Hi, sounds like an interesting project. I'm a fellow Volvo owner (in the club) and my view is that it would be far better to keep the car on the road, than let if fall into such a state it ends up getting raced or just scrapped. I've got a 940 and don't know much about earlier cars but there is no reason you can't keep it's identity and improve it as well. As for lowering it I expect Volvo would have done the same and fitted bigger wheels and brakes as well, they wouldn't have just stuck a more powerful engine in and left the rest the same.
If you are careful and don't fit excessively wide alloys, I assume it's got steel wheels at the moment even a lot of fellow Volvo owners wouldn't notice if you turned up at a show with it, even the engine unless you went the the blue Samco hose route. My own 940 looks bog standard I even have volvo wheels trims on it but it's got V70 brakes and bigger wider wheels, just so I could fit half decent tyres on it. I had a guy come up to me at a show and say, really nice standard car shame you don't fit some alloys on it !

What about the 4-pot 2.3 turbo from the 740/940? Should bolt straight in and that's easily reversible?

you`ve got a point there - why improve it with more power if i`m not going to be able to stop or handle well? The standard 14inch steel wheels are still fitted. I`ve seen a few 240`s fitted with 16/17/18inch wheels that really suited the car, but I`m liking the Q-car suggestion from earlier, so provided i`ve got enough space in the arches, I may see about getting a set of the standard steel wheels banded - not sure how much i`ve got in there, but the arches look big enough to take another 1-2inches possibly, both in diameter and size. The 740/940 is a strong possibility too, and i`m also considering Where i`m moving to in a few weeks, there is (or was, when I used to live that way) a scrapyard within a scrapyard in or near Middlesbrough, and all he had were Volvo`s. once I`m moved and settled, the plan will be to see if I can find them and if they`re still there see if I can find either a T5-donor or a 7/940.

Long-term, I am tempted to do the T5 engine conversion but on the other hand do i potentially ruin a rare edition of a common car? any thoughts, folks? Personally, i`m 60-40 in favour at the moment. It's your car so do what you want with it! www.volvoenthusiastsclub.co.uk/buyersguides/200/buyguide.htmSays this, 'The early 245 Estates, the 242, and Special Edition 240 Saloon’s called ‘The Thor’ and the Silver Jubilee are the rarest of the 240 Series, with the Estate and Limited Edition models in good condition demanding the most money, especially if manual. The ‘GLT’ is the sports model with performance engine, up-rated suspension and alloy wheels as standard and is available in both Saloon and Estate versions, auto or manual/overdrive gearbox – These are a most sort after model.' Yours is the silver jubilee but even so, the engine would just be a standard 240 engine (probably a B21) the engine bay is huge so I'm sure you could be adventurous about what engine you want fitted, aparantly a B230 turbo engine from a 940 is an easy swap,

another picture or two, as promised! and your right, 2.1 engine and huge amount of space in the 'bay I`ve heard talk of people fitting a twin-turbo Supra engine (never remember the engine code!) and a Lexus V8 in there. I`ve been looking a bit more into the B230FT (700/900 2.3 turbo ) swap and i`m liking that idea more and more - seems like an easier swap and a bit easier on the bank balance too. Plus, it seems i can get 300-350bhp from the 230FT without too major expense, compared to a T5
